In this study, the applicability and external/internal stability of a MSEW abutment with a slab were investigated. Structural analysis of slab bridges between 10 ~ 20.0 m and thicknesses of 0.7 ~ 0.9 m was carried out to calculate the reaction forces due to dead and live loads acting on the bridge supports. The slab bridge with a length of 20.0 m satisfied the allowable contact pressure of 200 kPa for the true MSEW abutment. Because the external stability of the true MSEW abutment was dominated by the geometry of the MSE wall, the change in the factor of safety due to the load of the super-structure is small. Because the stiffness of the foundations is fixed and the load of the super-structure is increased, the factor of safety of the bearing capacity was reduced. As the load of the super-structure was increased, the horizontal earth pressure of the true MSEW abutment increased greatly. As a result, the pullout and fracture of the uppermost reinforcement, which are the factors of safety, did not meet the design criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the pullout resistance and the long-term allowable tensile force of the reinforcement placed on the top of the reinforced soils to ensure efficient design and performance of a true MSEW abutment.
Deep-seabed test miner operated by a self-propelled mining system moving on soft soil is an essential device to secure floating and towing performances. The performances of the tracked vehicle are seriously influenced by noise factors such as the shear strength of the seafloor, bottom current, seafloor slope, speed of tracked vehicle, reaction forces of flexible hose, steering ratio, etc. Due to uncertainties related to noise factors, the design of a deep-sea manganese nodules test miner that satisfies target reliabilities is difficult. Therefore, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is required to guarantee system reliability under circumstances where uncertainties related to noise factors prevail. Among noise factors, the bottom current, a bimodal distribution, is censored due to the observation limit of measurement devices. Therefore, estimated distribution of the bottom current is inaccurate without considering these characteristics and the result of RBDO cannot be guaranteed. In this paper, we define censored data as unknown values over the limit of observation. If this data is estimated by using Akaike information criterion (AIC) that cannot consider the characteristics of censored data, the distribution of estimated data cannot guarantee accurate reliability. Therefore, censored AIC that can consider the characteristics of data is used to estimate accurate distribution of the bottom current. Finally, RBDO, under circumstances where uncertainties related to noise factors combined censored data are present, is performed on the mobility of a deep-sea manganese nodules test miner.

This study examined the current and future Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) control device markets and analyzed the recent studies on indoor air pollutantr emoval to develop a new technology for fine dust control. Currently, the mechanical filter technique occupies the bulk of the IAQ control market but the electronic technique is emerging as an alternative to control fine dust efficiently. Among the gaseous VOCs and fine dust particles contaminating the indoor air quality, fine dust particles are more problematic because they threaten human health by penetrating deep into the body and producing secondary contaminants by chemical reaction with VOCs. The electronic IAQ control device using dielectrophoretic and electrostatic forces is a good option for public spaces where many people pass, and at the same time, it needs to consider temperature, humidity, and the particle properties of specific areas to highlight the control efficiency. Electronic-related technology is expected to be used widely in many public/private spaces wherever a dust-free environment is required.

The objective of this study was to find out whether the unilateral distraction of mandible has an influence on temporomandibular joint and if it does, how significant the influence is. Four beagle dogs were used in this study. Each dog had two implants placed into the left mandible. The mandible was distracted for 14days with an distraction device as an amount of 0.75mm, twice per day after osteotomy between two implants. Each animals were sacrificed at the second, fourth, sixth and eighth week after the total distraction amount of 10.5mm were gotten. Upon embedding and staining, the specimens were evaluated with a light microscope. The results were as follows. 1. For the second week group, the articular cartilage and osteoid seam of temporal bone and condyle were relatively well maintained. There were not any significant differences between distraction side and non distraction side. 2. For the fourth week group, the periosteal reaction was activated and the articular cartilage and osteoid seam of temporal bone and condyle were severely thickened - especially at posterior portion of distraction side. This findings revealed that the unilateral distraction forces has more influence on distraction side than on non distraction side, and on posterior portion than on anterior portion. 3. For the sixth and eighth week group, the thickness of meniscus in distraction side gradually recovered to the initial level. The thickened articular cartilage and osteoid seam of temporal bone and condyle were decreased in distraction side and showed relatively stable in non distraction side. From this results, we suggest that several considerations are required such as using an occlusal splint, maintaining the stability of bone distraction device and evaluating bone distraction rate to minimize the damages of temporomandibular joint tissues in early stage of distraction side.

In this study, the structural analysis is performed on the method of shallow block and deep cement mixing pile, and then their characteristics and associated behaviors were analyzed. In the case of continuous beam analysis, the predicted settlement was very small, and shear force and bending stress are somewhat overestimated. The frame method is similar to numerical analysis in the internal force shallow block and long pile, but because the settlement of pile is underestimated, the additional calculation using the reaction of the long pile is necessary. For soil arching method and piled raft foundation method, the excessive axial force of long pile was predicted because the load sharing of pile is very large compared to the other methods. In the behavior of the shallow block and deep pile method, the settlement of shallow block and contact pressure are much in the center than the edge. In the estimating method considering the interaction between improved material and ground, the load sharing of the soil-cement pile ranges from 20% to 45%, and the stress ratio is 2.0~5.0 less than piled DCM. The maximum member forces at the boundary conditions of pile head are similar, but in fixed head the axial force and vertical displacement are different in accordance with pile arrangement.
Vertical cutoff walls such as steel pipe sheet piles (SPSPs) have been commonly applied for the construction of the offshore waste landfill site. Because the SPSPs are sequentially installed by connecting their joints to those of adjacent piles, their mechanical stability should be ensured against the inherent external forces on the sea. The objective of this study is to evaluate the structural performances of the newly developed types of SPSP joint compared with those of other joint types. The problems of the traditional SPSP joints are investigated, and an advanced joint shape of SPSP, which is named double H with L-T (DHLT) joint, are designed for improving the constructability and maintenance. Full-scale models of the DHLT joint are manufactured, and then its joint areas are filled with grout material. After 28 days of curing time, compressive and tensile strength tests were performed on the joint models and the test results were compared with those of the traditional joints. Experimental results show that the structural capacities of the DHLT joint models are lower than those of traditional joints due to the influence of grout and steel members. In the cases of the compressive strength test, especially, bending occurs on steel H-beam with no distinct cracks in grout due to the asymmetrical structure of joint which has no reaction force. This study shows that the performance of the SPSP joint can be improved by considering the influence factors on the structural capacities estimated by the experimental tests.

Generally, the gap-and-sag method is used in the shipbuilding stage before coupling the shafts to check whether they are installed at the same position as designed and derived from shaft alignment calculation. The primary installed propeller shaft becomes a reference point, the position of the remaining shafts are sequentially determined through the gap-and-sag value derived from the deflection and deflection angle at each shaft flange by own weight. If the reference point varies against the design value, it would have a series of effects on the installation of the remaining shafts. Moreover, after coupling the shafts, even if the bearing reaction forces derived from measurement are satisfied by the allowable limit range, consequently it might have an adverse effect on the stability of the shafting system by not being able to estimate the relative slope angle between the propeller shaft and the after-stern tube bearing. In this paper, to deal with above-mentioned phenomenon, the theoretical calculations related to designing an effective support point of the aft stern tube bearing and analysis by measurement is conducted through a case of open-up inspections. Based on this, a shaft installation guideline is proposed to minimize the misalignment related to preventing wiping damage of the after-stern tube bearing.
Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.
Internal mass transfer during osmotic dehydration of gingers in sugar solution was examined as a function of concentration, temperature and immersion time of those solutions using moisture loss, sugar gain, molality and rate parameter. Influence of osmotic dehydration on browning reaction and texture properties of air dried rehydrated was also evaluated. Increasing the concentration and temperature of sugar solutions increased moisture loss, sugar gain, molality and rate parameter. Water loss and sugar gain were rapid in the first 3 min and then changed gentle slope. Moisture loss during osmotic dehydration using a sugar solution $(60\;Brix,\;80^{\circ}C)$ with 18 min immersion time was 40.05 g moisture/100 g wet ginger which was 52% reduction of initial moisture content in ginger (83.02%, wet basis). The changes of rate parameter were more affected by temperature than by concentration of sugar solution. Minimum browning degree (O.D.=0.027) was carried out by osmotic dehydration in sugar solution $(40\;or\;50\;Brix,\;80^{\circ}C)$ with 15 min immersion time compared to control (O.D.=0.132). Influence of osmotic dehydration on puncture forces of 3 min rehydrated ginger in boiling water were $22{\sim}34%$ of reduction, while blanching treatment had not affected compared to those of control.
In this study, the characteristics of support behavior according to the change of ground condition of the cast-in-place pile and the large Caisson foundation, which are increasingly used as foundations of large structures and bridges. the allowable bearing capacity calculated using the yield load analysis method was analyzed to calculate similar allowable bearing capacity for each method. In addition, the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the ultimate load analysis method was found to have a large difference in bearing capacity for each method. Through this point, it can be usefully used as an empirical formula for evaluating the settlement characteristics of piles in future design and construction. In addition, as a result of examining the ground force distribution during sedimentation of large caissons, the section of the weathered rock layer showed almost constant ground force distribution as ground forces decreased after yield occurred at the base corner. And in the bed rock layer section, the foundation's center was transformed into a ground force in the form of a convex downward due to an increase in the ground resistance of the central part. Using these results, the theory previously presented by Fang (1991) and Kőgler (1936) was proved.
