This paper presents the section model for analysis of RC circular tower structures based on nonlinear material laws. The governing equations for normal strains due to the bending moment and the normal force are derived in the case when openings are located symmetrically in respect to the bending direction. In this approach the additional reinforcement at openings is also taken into account. The mathematical model is expressed in the form of a set of nonlinear equations which are solved by means of the minimization of the sums of the second powers of the residuals. For minimization the BFGS quasi-Newton and/or Hooke-Jeeves local minimizers suitably modified are applied to take into account the box constraints on variables. The model is verified on the set of data encountered in engineering practice. The numerical examples illustrate the effects of the loading eccentricity and size of the opening on the strains and stresses in concrete and steel in the cross-sections under consideration. Calculated results indicate that the additional reinforcement at the openings increases the resistance capacity of the section by several percent.
An improved method has been developed for the computation of the section forces and stiffness in nonlinear finite element analysis of RC plane frames. The need for a new approach arises because the conventional technique may have a questionable level of efficiency if a large number of layers is specified and a questionable level of accuracy if a smaller number is used. The proposed technique is based on automatically dividing the section into zones of similar state of stress and tangent modulus and then numerically integrating within each zone to evaluate the sectional stiffness parameters and forces. In the new system, the size, number and location of the layers vary with the state of the strains in the cross section. The proposed method shows a significant improvement in time requirement and accuracy in comparison with the conventional layered approach. The computer program based on the new technique has been used successfully to predict the experimental load-deflection response of a RC frame and good agreement with test and other numerical results have been obtained.

As the limit state design method is applied as the design method of reinforced concrete structure, the ultimate state is considered when analyses or designing. In fact, when the reinforced concrete member is bent, there is a confining effect by stirrup, but the material curve of unconfined concretes applied when designing. In this study, to evaluate the suitability of the confined concrete model for flexural members, a 4-point bending test was conducted on RC simple beam with a double-reinforced rectangular cross-section, and the behavior of the member after yield was analyzed in detail using image processing method. For detailed analysis, the DIC method was adopted as an image analysis method, and the validity of DIC method was verified by comparing the measurement results with the LVDT. The distribution of the strain on the concrete surface calculated as a result of the DIC method could be obtained, and the average strain distribution of the cross-section was calculated. Using the average strain distribution, the stress distribution applied existing confined concrete model as a material curve could be derived. Through the comparison of the experimental results and the existing model application results, the suitability of the confined concrete model for RC flexural members having a rectangular cross-section was evaluated.
A numerical procedure is presented that provides ultimate curvature and moment domains for composite rectangular and circular cross-sections of reinforced concrete columns with or without an embedded steel section subjected to combined axial loading and biaxial bending. The stress resultants for the concrete and reinforcement bars are calculated using fiber analysis and the stress resultants for the encased structural steel are evaluated using an exact integration of the stress-strain curve over the area of the steel section. A dimensionless formula is proposed that can be used for any section with similar normalized geometric and mechanical parameters. The contribution of each material to the bearing capacity of a section (resistance load and moments) is calculated separately so that the influence of each geometric or mechanical parameter on the bearing capacity can be investigated separately.

A maximum likelihood (ML) approach is presented for estimating the mean of radar cross section (RCS) of a Swerling III target and its numerical solution methods are discussed. The solution methods are based on an approximate expression for implementing the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The methods are evaluated and compared through Monte Carlo simulations in terms of estimation accuracy and computational efficiency to obtain a most efficient method for both Swerling I and Swerling III targets. The methods are also compared with a previously reported method based on heuristics.
The paper presents an effective stiffness model for deformational analysis of reinforced concrete cracked members in bending throughout the short-term loading up to the near failure. The method generally involves the analytical derivation of an effective moment of inertia based on the smeared crack technique. The method, in a simplified way, enables us to take into account the non linear properties of concrete, the effects of cracking and tension stiffening. A statistical analysis has shown that proposed technique is of adequate accuracy of calculated and experimental deflections data provided for beams with small, average and normal reinforcement ratios.

In this study, to predict the behavior of RC beam strengthened with Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) plate, analytical program considering material non-linearity is developed. Strain compatibility and force equilibrium are applied and internal forces of constitutive material are calculated using nonlinear stress-strain relationship. Also, to certainty the reliability of analytical program, deflection, strain of CFRP plate, change of neutral axis on cross section and crack distribution at failure are compared with those of experiment, and each results are almost coincident.

Transverse steel bars are used in the plastic hinge zone of columns to insure adequate confinement, prevention of longitudinal bar buckling and ductile behavior. Fabrication and placement of rectangular hoops and cross-ties in columns are difficult to construct. Details of reinforcement for rectangular section require a lot of rectangular hoops and cross-ties. In this paper, to solve these problems, the new lateral confinement method using oblong hoop is proposed for the transverse confinement of the flared column. It can be the alternative for oblong cross-section and flared column with improved workability and cost-efficiency. The final objectives of this study are to suggest appropriate oblong hoop details and to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for seismic performance or damage assessment based on the drift levels such as residual deformation, elastic strain energy. This paper describes factors of seismic performance such as ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio and effective stiffness.

When a reinforced concrete (RC) structure is exposed to a corrosive environment for an extended period of time, the material qualities deteriorate, resulting in a loss in seismic performance. Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) have been used to reinforce the corroded RC structure, which can achieve reinforcement effectiveness for a small change in cross-section size. In this work, finite element models of unjacketed RC pier and ECC jacketed pier were established and verified by experimental tests, with the buckling effect of longitudinal reinforcement considered. Compared with the unjacketed pier, the displacement of the pier top of the ECC jacketed pier was reduced by about 9.52% under earthquake action. In the case of moderate and major earthquakes, the probability of exceedance of ECC jacketed pier is significantly reduced. For the case of rare earthquake loading, with the ECC jacket, the e of the pier experiencing serious damage and complete damage states is reduced by 10.29% and 29.78%, respectively.
The present study experimentally and analytically investigates the effect of tensile reinforcement ratio and arrangement on the behavior of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The experimental part of the program was comprised of 8 RC beams that were tested under four-point bending. Results have shown that by keeping the total cross-section area of tensile reinforcing bars constant, in specimens with a low reinforcement ratio, increasing the number and decreasing the diameter of bars in the section lead to 21% and 29% increase in the load-carrying capacity of specimens made with normal and high compressive strength, respectively. In specimens with high reinforcement ratio, a different behavior was observed. Furthermore, the accuracy of the existing code provisions and analytical models in predicting the load-carrying capacity of the FRP strengthened beams failed by premature debonding mode were evaluated. Herein, a model is proposed which considers the tensile reinforcement ratio (as opposed to code provisions) to achieve more accurate results for calculating the load carrying capacity of FRP strengthened RC beams.
