  • In this study the continuous rectangular spiral hoop is used for saving cost and time, solving manpower shortage, and the quality of structures. Generally the use of continuous spiral reinforcement in reinforced concrete elements improve the strength and the ductility of the concrete. Savings in cost and time is demonstrated with the continuous rectangular spiral hoop through the mock up test of beam and column elements. In case of a 4m column element the time of rebar work decreases up to 40% compared with traditional hoop, and in case of a 8m beam the time also decreases 40%. This study present the construction method and details.

  • Seismic performance of critical facilities has been focused on the structural components over the past decade. However, most earthquake damages were observed to the nonstructural components during and after the earthquakes. The primary objective of this research was to develop the seismic fragility of the piping system incorporating the nonlinear Tee-joint finite element model in the full scale piping configuration installed in critical facilities. The procedure for evaluating fragility curves corresponding to the first damage state was considered the effects of the top floor acceleration sensitivities for 5, 10, 15, and 20 story linear RC and steel building systems subjected to 22 selected ground motions as a function of ground motion uncertainties. The result of this study revealed that the conditional probability of failure of the piping system on the top floor in critical facilities did not increase with increased level of story height and in fact, story level in buildings can tune the fragilities between the building and the piping system.

  • Numerical damage assessment of Van train station building consisting of three RC blocks due to 2011 Van Earthquakes by nonlinear dynamic analysis is presented. The structural model is created with rigid-end offsets and plastic hinges for nonlinear analysis. Rigid-end offsets are considered for connection areas and proposed for wall-supported elements. In wall-supported elements, walls take place in a limited part of the columns. Nonlinear dynamic analysis of the building with and without rigid-end offsets is performed by using real earthquake records and results are compared. The results show that rigid-end offsets have significant effects on the seismic behavior of the structures.

  • Shimizu Corporation Tokyo Headquarters, one of the city's leading office buildings, features many pioneering technologies that contribute to a sustainable society through environmental stewardship and a sophisticated disaster management facility. In terms of structural engineering, a seismic isolation system incorporating reinforced concrete core walls and precast concrete perimeter frames create a robust structure in the event of a large earthquake. In addition to the seismic resistance of the structure, several pioneering construction methods and materials are adopted. This office building can serve as a basis for new design and construction approaches and methodologies to ensure safe and economical structures.

  • A fire outbreak in a reinforcement concrete structure looses the organism by different contraction and expansion of hardened cement pastes and aggregate, and causes cracks by thermal stress, leading to the deterioration of the durability. So, concrete reinforcement structure is damaged partial or whole structure system. Therefore accurate diagnosis of deterioration is needed based on mechanism of fire deterioration in general concrete structures. Fundamental information and data on the properties of concrete exposed to high temperature are necessary for accurate diagnosis of deterioration. In this study, consider case of investigation methods and repair work in fire damaged structure concrete.

  • Margin of safety against potential of progressive collapse is among important features of a structural system. Often eccentricity in plan of a building causes concentration of damage, thus adversely affects its progressive collapse safety margin. In this paper the progressive collapse of symmetric and asymmetric 3-story reinforced concrete ordinary moment resisting frame buildings subjected to the earthquake ground motions are studied. The asymmetric buildings have 5%, 15% and 25% mass eccentricity. The distribution of the damage and spread of the collapse is investigated using nonlinear time history analyses. Results show that potential of the progressive collapse at both stiff and flexible edges of the buildings increases with increase in the level of asymmetry in buildings. It is also demonstrated that "drift" as a more easily available global response parameter is a good measure of the potential of progressive collapse rather than much difficult-to-calculate local response parameter of "number of collapse plastic hinges".

  • Usually the analyses of structures are carried out by assuming the base of structures to be fixed. However, the soil beneath foundation alters the earthquake loading and varies the response of structure. Hence, it is not realistic to analyze structures by considering it to be fixed. The importance of soil-structure interaction was realized from the past failures of massive structures by neglecting the effect of soil in seismic analysis. The analysis of massive structures requires soil flexibility to be considered to avoid failure and ensure safety. Present study, considers the seismic behavior of multi-storey reinforced concrete narrow and wide buildings of various heights with and without shear wall supported on raft foundation incorporating the effect of soil flexibility. Analysis of the three dimensional models of six different shear wall positions founded on four different soils has been carried out using finite element software LS DYNA. The study investigates the differences in spectral acceleration coefficient (Sa/g), base shear and storey shear obtained following the seismic provisions of Indian standard code IS: 1893 (2002) (IS) and International building code IBC: 2012 (IBC). The base shear values obtained as per IBC provisions are higher than IS values.

  • Recently, interest in OSC(Off Site Construction) is increasing due to the trend of a decrease in skilled workers and an increase in labor costs. In this regard, PC(Precast Concrete) is being reviewed for apartments, the most common type of housing in Korea. As the biggest concern for PC apartment houses, civil complaints such as inter-floor noise and leakage were presented. In this study, the details of the joints were reviewed based on the past cases of PC apartments, and the details of the recently constructed or planned PC apartments were investigated. Through this, the leakage path in the past was analyzed through the existing research literature and data. And wall type RC and PC apartment joint leakage test was performed and we found the needs for a detail of waterproof steps, sealant. Also, joint details were investigated for a rahmen type apartment housing under construction. At last, A discussion was conducted on the direction for a detailed proposal of an improved joint in the future.

  • Expert systems which represent the appllication of artificial intelligence research are now nearly 20 years old. It is said that the present technology together with ever- increasing computing applicability of Combined Hypertext-Expert System Techniques to the design of reinforced concrete structures. Hypertext systems allow the user to control the system while expert systems alone don't give the user any control over the system. Therefore the combination of these two techniques, offered by KnowledgePro, may bring us closer to real user-expert communication. The system developed in this work offers information on design in general by reorganizing ACI Manual 318-89, detailed stress analysis and cross sectional design of simple PC/RC beams and optimum design of reinforced concrete building frames. The system also includes the author's earlier work on guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete. It is also includes the author's earlier work on guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete. It is also demonstrated how well and conveniently existing programs can be used by reorganizing the user manuals in the context of hypertext.

  • Seismic codes are the best available guidance on how structures should be designed and constructed to ensure adequate resistance to seismic forces during earthquakes. Seismic provisions of Indian standard code, International building code and European code are applied for buildings with ordinary moment resisting frames and reinforced shear walls at various locations considering the effect of site soil conditions. The study investigates the differences in spectral acceleration coefficient ($S_a/g$), base shear and storey shear obtained following the seismic provisions in different codes in the analysis of these buildings. Study shows that the provision of shear walls at core in low rise buildings and at all the four corners in high rise buildings gives the least value of base shear.
