  • The main purpose of this study is to provide a basic information for the seismic capacity evaluation and the seismic design of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings, which are comprised of a pilotis in the first story. In this study, relationships between strengths and ductilities of each story of RC buildings with pilotis are investigated based on the nonlinear seismic response analysis. The characteristics of low-rise RC buildings with pilotis are assumed as the double degree of freedom structural systems. In order to simulate these systems, the pilotis is idealized as a degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fails in flexure and the upper story of shear wall system is idealized as a origin-oriented hysteretic model that fails in shear, respectively. Stiffness properties of both models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients and structures are subjected to various ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of required strengths for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes. The result indicates that the required strength levels derived can be used as a basic information for seismic evaluation and design criteria of low-rise reinforced concrete shear wall buildings having pilotis structure.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the seismic performance of a 2 story RC shear wall system by the static reversal loading test. The lower 2 stories of the prototype structure were selected, and the specimens of this study were comprised of a T-type wall with an opening. The specimens were reduced to about 60% of the full scale size and were constructed to measure the result of the experimental variable regarding the existence of a lintel beam. To perform this study, the static repeated loading test was performed. According to the existence or absence of a lintel beam, the structural capacities and behavioral differences of the shear wall system were compared. The test results of this study showed that the specimen with a lintel beam underwent the seismic performance with an ultimate strength and ductility capacity better than the specimen without a lintel beam.

  • Domestic reinforced concrete (RC) apartments have a unique structural system that consists of shear walls and rink members of slabs and lintels. In this study, the nonlinear static analysis of two RC shear wall sub-assemblages, with and without lintels, was conducted using the uniaxial spring model to develop a method for accurately predicting the seismic behavior of domestic RC apartments. In the case of the specimen without lintels, the analytical result successfully represented a simulation of the nonlinear behavior of the specimen in accordance with the test result. On the other hand, in the case of the specimen with lintels, the analysis resulted in underestimating the nonlinear behavior of the specimen compared to the test result, because the coupling effect could not be predicted from the earlier loading cycle.

  • Safety and efficiency in the construction of RC structures mainly depends on optimal operation of shore-slat systems. The disasters in RC construction are mainly due to excessive load applied to falsework and premature removal of supports. Development of sufficient compressive strength of early-age connote is essential for the safety of structures during construction. Most of studies on shore-slab interaction have focused on flat slab structures. In this study, load distributions in floor slabs and supports during the construction of shear wall-type RC apartment building structures is investigated using finite element analysis.

  • It is necessary to develop reliable but simple analytical models to predict the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete wall structures. In this study, experimental results on the cyclic reversed lateral behaviors of reinforced concrete shear wall assemblages are simulated analytically by using the wall, beam, and column models available in the PERFORM 3D program. Through the comparison of experimental and analytical results, the reliability and limitations of the analysis are evaluated. In addition, the information, which could not be obtained experimentally, such as the internal flow of force, the contribution of the flange walls, and the resisting mechanism of the walls with the contribution of the coupling beam, is provided.

  • Recently, RC transfer slab systems have been used widely to construct high-rise wall-type apartments for securing parking space or public space. However, it is problem that the design method and structural performance evaluation method developed for thin RC flat slab are still used in the design of the transfer slab whose thickness is very thick and therefore structural behavior is expected to be different from RC flat slab. Thus, for the rational design of the transfer slab, the ultimate shear behavior of the RC transfer slab system is required to be analyzed properly. Accordingly, in the present study, the two-way shear behavior of the transfer slab was analyzed using nonlinear FEM according to various design parameters such as thickness of the transfer slab, strength of concrete, shear span ratio, and reinforcement ratio. In addition, the two-way shear strength evaluations of RC transfer slab by the existing evaluation methods were verified by comparing those with the results of nonlinear FEM analysis.

  • In Korea, one of the most used structural systems for residential apartment buildings is the combination of the reinforced concrete (RC) wall and rahmen structures in the upper and lower floors, respectively. To alleviate the significant difference between the stiffnesses of these two structural systems, large transfer girders are generally required in the transition zone of the structure, which then results in the use of large amounts of construction materials and low economic feasibility. This paper proposes a new RC boundary-beam-wall system that can minimize the disadvantages of the RC transfer girder system. The structural performance of the proposed system subjected to axial loading was evaluated via rigorous three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis. Four parameters, namely the ratio of lower wall to upper wall lengths, distance between stirrups, main bar slope ratio, and slab length, were considered in the finite element analysis, and their effects on the maximum axial load were analyzed and discussed.

  • For earthquake simulation test it is essential to make sure the similitude in behaviors between the full scale prototype and the reduced scale model. This paper presents the test results obtained through the cyclic lateral-force test, on two-story RC wall subassemblages. A lower 2-story portion of the prototype structure was selected as subassemblages. The global behavior such as the strength and ductility, and the local behavior such as flexural, shear and uplift deformation were measured. The test results of the 3 : 5 scale specimens representing the prototype were compared with those of 1 : 7 scale models. Two types of subassemblages were used: One with lintel beams and one without lintel beams. The comparison shows that 1 : 7 scale model simulated in general successfully the global and local behaviors of the prototype.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete pier walls under cyclic out-of-plane loading and to develop improved seismic design criteria. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced by using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. A 4-node flat shell element with drilling rotational stiffness is used for spatial discretization. The layered approach is used to discretize the behavior of concrete and reinforcement through the thickness. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The method is verified a useful tool to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete pier walls subjected to cyclic out-of-plane load through comparing with reliable experimental results.
