A new state evaluation approach for structural safety is presented in this study. To reduce the subjectivity of the view and judgement of each expert founded on a limited body of knowledge in cognitive and inferential process of safety assessment, we introduced inductive learning method in AI. Inductive learning derives generalization from experiences. Decision tree induction algorithm analyzes the domain knowledge, produce rules via decision trees and then allow us to determine the classification of an object from case examples. The training set of state evaluation is constructed according to the selected attributes from working reports of RC bridge girders.

The so-called Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis on reinforced concrete bridge can provide useful information for initial design and maintenance plan of the RC bridge. This paper proposes an LCC prediction equation and a sensitivity analysis method for RC bridges. An LCC equation for the RC bridge which includes initial investment cost, maintenance cost, and demolition cost was derived and verified from the data for design and construction of an RC slab bridge. In order to solve uncertainty problem on actual discount rate and material characteristics in the analysis of LCC of concrete bridges, a sensitivity analysis method on the LCC using the Monte Carlo simulation technique was suggested.

Concrete guide rail and median barrier are an attached RC member, however they are vulnerable to cracking due to slip form construction and large surface of member. In this study, causes and pattern of cracking are analyzed through assessment and NDT (Non-Destructive Technique) evaluation for concrete guide rail and median barrier on highway structure. For this work, analysis on drying shrinkage and hydration heat are performed considering installation period, and plastic shrinkage is also analyzed considering their environmental conditions. From the evaluation, plastic settlement around steel location, drying/ plastic shrinkage, and aggregate segregation are inferred to be the main causes of cracking in the structures. The crack causes and patterns are schematized and techniques of crack-control are suggested. Furthermore concrete guide rail/ median barrier in the bridge on the sea are vulnerable to cracking at early age so that special attentions should be paid at the stages of material selection and construction.

Today, some bridges or highways are becoming superannuated in Korea. Also, in this section, rehabilitation, replacement and expansion are necessary to increasing traffic volumes these days. Bridge reconstruction is major problem because it has relation to civil application, economical loss and loss of vehicles made a detour while this work. Many precast components and methods of construction are developed for this issue. Many research of various precast components and new materials are being performed owing to apply to prefabrication bridges. The present paper represents experimental studies on the performance of precast CFFT pier model. Also, stay-in-place RC pier and stay-in-place CFFT pier are made an experiment on due to comparing test results. Hysteretic responses of all columns are obtained through the test. Compared with the displacement ductility factors, conclusions of seismic performances can be made.

The collapse of bridges due to earthquakes results in many casualties and property damages. Thus, accurate prediction and preparation are required for the behavior of bridges during earthquakes. In particular, columns play an important role in the seismic behavior of bridges. The risk of collapse due to an earthquake increases when there is a problem of the insufficient lap splice in the column. In this study, to analyze the characteristics of the lap splice in the column, a numerical model was defined for the insufficient lap-spliced columns and verified using experimental data. The developed column model was applied to a commonly used RC slab bridge. Nonlinear static analysis for the column was performed to evaluate the change in the performance of the column according to the lap-spliced length. In addition, this study assessed the effect of the lap-spliced length on the seismic fragility analysis.

Carbonation is the results of the interaction of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere with the alkaline hydroxides in the concrete. Reinforced steel corrosion due to concrete carbonation is one of main factors on the decrease in durability of RC structure. This study investigates the influence of carbonation on the bridges under various environment condition and quantifies the effect of carbonation various domestic field data. The failure probability of durability is evaluated on the basis of reliability concept. In addition, service life of the structures is predicted based on the intended probability of durable failure in domestic concrete specification. According to experimental results of the carbonation depth, the carbonation depth increased with structural age. It is analyzed that carbonation velocity of the structures under urban area and sea condition is 1.6-1.9 times faster than the river condition. Service life of the bridges under urban area and sea condition is decreased about 2.4-3.3 times than river condition.
Most bridge piers were practically designed and constructed with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels before the 1992 seismic design provisions of Korea Bridge Design Specification were implemented. It has been known that lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region is not desirable for seismic performance of RC bridge piers. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the Quasi-static test and to propose the need of seismic retrofit of existing bridge piers through the damage level. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.0 which could induce the flexural failure mode. It was confirmed from this experiment that significant reduction of seismic performance was observed for test specimens with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Pertinent seismic retrofit was determined to be needed for existing RC bridge piers with the lap-spliced of $50\%$ longitudinal reinforcing steels.

This study proposes a novel method for in service evaluation of tension force of a prestressed 7-wire strand which is frequently employed for retrofitting bridge superstructure. The smart strand is made by replacing the straight king wire of the strand with an instrumented steel tube in which the FBG sensor is embedded. Since the strain of the smart strand can easily be measured using the sensor, it is possible to monitor tension force of the strand during the service. For the sake of demonstrating effectiveness of the proposed strand, we came up with a 7.0m long prototype with 2 FBG sensors, and it is applied as an external tendon to a 6.4m long and 0.6 high RC T-shaped beam. A loading-unloading test has been carried out, and estimated tension forces using the smart strand are compared with measured forces by load cell. The comparison showed that the proposed smart tendon is useful and accurate for monitering tension force of the prestressed tendon.

This study investigates the effect of carbon fiber sheet (CFS) and carbon fiber strand sheet (CFSS) on the fatigue resistance and compressive strength of RC slabs. The results of a comparison of the number of equivalent cycles between the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slab test specimens obtained from a fatigue test indicate that the CFSS-reinforced RC slab has 1.2~1.3 times greater effect of reinforcement than the CFS-reinforced RC slab. This study also indicates that the fatigue resistance of the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slabs is ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is not lower than the specified design strength prescribed in the Specifications for Highway Bridges but is not ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is lower than the specified design strength, although the effect of reinforcement is secured.

Recently, bridge structures has progressed the researches about seismic performance by occurrence of earthquake increased compared with the past. In the substructure of bridge, confining transverse reinforcement has arranged in plastic hinge region to resist the lateral load which increased the lateral confining effect. Columns are increased the seismic performance through secure of the stiffness and ductility The design specification for arrangement of confining transverse reinforcement same specification of domestic and international that suggested to solid reinforced concrete column(RC). This design specification have limits for Internally Confined Hollow RC(ICH RC) column because of different the component and performance characteristics of column. In this paper suggested the modified equation for economics and rational design through investigation of displacement ductility when applied the existing specification at the steel composite hollow RC column.
