Based on samples collected from the Korean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during an investigation of fishery resources by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) from 2002 to 2010, alongside some supplemental material, six species of the genus $Plesionika$ are identified: $P.$$izumiae$ Omori, 1971, $P.$$ortmanni$ Doflein, 1902, $P.$$grandis$ Doflein, 1902, $P.$$lophotes$ Chace, 1985, $P.$$narval$ (Fabricius, 1787), and $P.$$orientalis$ Chace, 1985. Of these, the last four species are new to Korean marine fauna. The distributional range of $P.$$narval$ extends to the East China Sea off Jeju Island. Excluding $P.$$izumiae$ and $P.$$ortmanni$, the other four species are relatively rare in the seas around Korea. They are described and illustrated with color photographs. A key to the Korean species of $Plesionika$ is also presented.
Since Taquet's first discovery of wild P. yedoensis at Mt. Halla, Korea, in 1908, its morphological chracteristics and question of origin of cultivated yedoensis have given controversies to the botanists. Takenaka, through his experiments on the hybridity of cultivated P. yedoensis, recently holds the opinion that P. yedoensis might have originated in Izu peninsula, Japan. The author presents the summarized report on the wild P. yedoensis and its putative parents based on his 2 years' investigated carried out at Mt. Halla during his breeding experiment of genus Prunus. The species of cherry tree used in the present investigation were identified by Prof. Mankyu Park and Mr. Jonghyu Pu, Korean taxonomists. 1) Wild cherry trees which grow wild in Mt. Halla and whose blooming season is April are mostly P. subhirtella var. pendula form. ascendens and P. donarium P. yedoensis is rare in number, around 10 individuals, having been found in a half century. 2) Individuals of wild yedoensis are variable in some of their morphological characteristics. This is, also, true in other species of Prunus. 3) Wild yedoensis whose vigorous growth, sterility, and rarity in number suggest hybrid origin, has intermediate characteristics between the P. subhirtella and P. donarium. 4) Due to the abnormal weather of the island and various environmental factors such as havbitats, some of the early-blooming subhirtella and late-blooming donarium would bloom at the same time, giving these two species the changes to cross. 5) Wild yedoensis is slightly different in some of its quantitative characters from cultivated species.
Population genetic assessment is essential for the conservation and management of endangered and rare plants. Neofinetia falcata is endangered epiphyte orchid and protected by law in Korea. In Korea, this species is only found on islands in the South Sea of Korea (including Jeju-do) and the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. We developed nine microsatellite makers to assess the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of three populations of N. falcata. The genetic diversity at the species level was low, which can be attributed to inbreeding or fragmentation into small, isolated populations. A recent bottleneck was detected in one population, likely due to overcollection. N. falcata exhibited moderated levels of differentiation among populations, with the three populations were divided into two clusters based on genetic structure. The genetic diversity and structure of N. falcata are affected by restricted gene flow by pollen or seeds due to isolation and geographic distance. Strategies for in situ and ex situ conservation of this species are been proposed based on the results of our study.
A syrnpatnc sample of Rana nigrnmaculata sand R plancyi (Anura) from Kwangu, Korea was investigated to clarify their taxonornic status and to estimate the degree of genic variation, genetic relatedness, and reproductive isolation between them, based on electrophoretic analysis, marphometric data, mating call, mating season, and habitat. All the characters measured including morphometric, genetic, behavioral, and ecological suggest that they are distinct species and R nigrnmaculata might have originated from R plancyi (tropical form about three and a half million years ago. An adult female was found to be Fl hybrid between two species The hybrid female possessed fettile eggs and morphologically intermediate to the parental species in head parts, hind limb, and web characters. The differences in mating call, mating behavior, breeding season, and habitat strongly suggest that postmating isolating mechanism is operating, even though very rare hybrid is found.
This study is based on crane fly specimens collected during an 80-year period (1937-2017) in the Republic of Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; the Snow Entomological Museum, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA; and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. These crane flies are developing in wet places which usually prevail at lower altitudes, but such areas are often used for agriculture and human settlements, making natural habitats scarce and fragmented. Probably because of that, Limnophila crane flies are rare on the Korean Peninsula and were unnoticed by previous researchers. The genus Limnophila Macquart, 1834 with three species being new record for the Korean Peninsula: L. (Limnophila) japonica Alexander, 1913, L. (L.) pictipennis (Meigen, 1818) and L. (L.) politostriata Alexander, 1934a. General information are presented for each species, such as on genus and subgenus, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula.
This study is based on crane fly specimens collected during more than 80 years, starting from 1938 through 2019, in the Republic of Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; the Snow Entomological Museum, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA; and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. Pilaria crane flies are aquatic and semiaquatic, developing in fast running and stagnant water bodies and in wet muddy places at the margins of water pools. Such habitats usually prevail at lower altitudes, but these areas most often are used for agriculture and human settlement, making natural habitats scarce and fragmented. Pilaria crane flies are rare, thus it is not surprising that genus was left unnoticed by previous researchers. The genus Pilaria Sintenis, 1889 with two species P. melanota Alexander, 1922 and P. simulans Savchenko, 1983, is a new record for the Korean Peninsula. We present general information on the genus, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula for each species.

To establish in vitro axillary bud culture conditions of Echinosophora koreensis Nakai, one of Korean endemic endangered species famous for beautiful flowers, we tested the influence of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in shooting and rooting stage from in vitro plants. In shoot multiplication, addition of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) to the media induced 2.5 to 3 shoots per bud during 4 weeks of culture. And media including 0.5 mg L-1 thidiazuron (TDZ) produced 3 to 4 shoots per bud. However, zeatin and isopentenyl adenine (2-ip) were not successful to increase shoot number, and the combination treatments of BA with other PGRs were also not effective. Shoots were smaller than 2 cm in length, in most of the treatments. In rooting, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) treatments in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 mg L-1 appeared to increase rooting rate by 10% to 60% approximately when compared with the control but roots developed with callus clusters. Indole butyric acid (IBA) addition had little effect on rooting (below 10%), while some roots were longer than in NAA treatments and some shoots were longer on high IBA concentrations (4.0 to 8.0 mg L-1). It is suggested that micropropagation is a highly applicable and promising to multiplication and conservation of rare and endangered endemic species.
While scientific information on the spatial variation of soda lake Microalgae is important to limnological studies, little information was reported from the Ethiopian Rift Valley Lake, Lake Chitu. This study aimed to understand the spatial distribution of the dominant Microalgae taxa in Lake Chitu, Ethiopia. The collection of samples and in situ measurements of some physico-chemical parameters were recorded at three sites for one cycle in November 2021. Fourteen species or genera of Microalgae were identified. Among those, Bacillariophyta were the most important with regard to species abundance and the rarest in species richness. Cyanophyta were the second-most important group in terms of species richness and rarity. Comparatively, all microalgae taxa were rare at both the anthropogenic areas (AA) and the flooding area (FA), which could be mainly due to intensive human and animal intervention and associated with extreme turbidity. Among Cyanophyta, Chroococcus minutus, Microcystis aeruginosa, and Spirulina platensis/fusiformis were predominant at both AA and FA, revealing their adaptation to less clear water and pollution. But S. platensis/fusiformis attained the highest abundance at the FA, indicating their preference for water in a highly nutrient-enriched area. We concluded that the spatial variation of microalgae diversity in relation to water quality parameters has implications for the importance of microalgae as a baseline indicator of water quality assessment tools in lakes.
