Enterprise storage systems that require high data reliability are applying RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) systems to recover from data loss and failure. In particular, RAID 5 ensures space efficiency and reliability by distributing parity across multiple storage devices. However, when storage devices have different capacities, RAID is built based on the smallest capacity storage device, resulting in wasted storage space. Therefore, research is needed to solve this resource management problem. In this paper, we propose a method for RAID grouping of each independent NAND flash memory block in a RAID consisting of SSD (Solid State Disk) with external SSDs as well as internal SSDs. This method is divided into a policy for delivering block information inside SSDs to the RAID system and a policy for RAID grouping of physical addresses delivered from the RAID system. This method allows us to maintain a RAID that does not waste resources when SSDs of different capacities are grouped into RAID5. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments.

이러한 환경에서 하드웨어 또는 소프트웨어 RAID(Redundant Array of Independent Disks)는 대용량 정보의 고성능의 입출력과 신뢰성을 위해서 필수적이 되었다.
In this paper, we propose differential-logging method to improve the performance of RMW(Read Modify Write) operations of DDR-SSD based software RAID. Small writes that are frequently occurred in enterprise applications are main factor to degrade the performance of RAID5. Once a block is updated in RAID5, the parity block of the block must be updated to maintain consistency of parity. Therefore, to process a small write request, we need to read its parity block stored in disk, read old data, perform XOR operation, and write updated data and parity block. Several methods for hard disk based software RAID are proposed to solve the small write problems in RAID 5. Ln this paper, we propose a differential-logging method which carefully considers the DDR-SSD to solve the small write problem in RAID 5. We show that our proposed method out performs the existing software RAID in LINUX through simulations.
In this article, we present, design, and implement a software and hardware for an embedded RAID system. The merits and drawbacks of our system are presented by performance evaluation. The proposed hardware system consists of three fibre channel controllers for the interface with fibre channel disks and hosts. Embedded Linux in which a RAID software is implemented is ported to the hardware. A SCSI target mode device driver and a target mode SCSI module are designed for that our RAID system is considered as a block device to a host computer. Linux Multi-device is used as RAID functions of this system. A data cache module is implemented for high performance and the interconnection between Linux Multi-device and the target mode SCSI module. The RAID 5 module of Multi-device is modified for improvement of read performance. The benchmark shows that the new RAID 5 module is superior to the original one in overall performance.

RAID systems have been used as a mass storage system with high parallelism and availability. Especially RAID systems with parity declustering are widely studied as a technique to provide high fault tolerancy and availability by reducing performance degradation in case of disk fuilures. In this paper, a new organization of parity declustering with distributed spare units is proposed. And in normal mode where there are no failures, it is shown that these organization can improve the performance of RAID systems. By simulation methods, it is proved that the performance of RAID system in normal mode is improved by 5 to 15%.
A large RAID system may consist of several PCI bus segments since a PCI bus segment can connect only a limited number of disks. In this paver, PCI bus transactions in a RAID system are classified in terms of the initiator and the target of the transaction. Also, the data transfer time of each transaction type is analyzed. By using the analysis results, read and write performance of two RAID system configurations are formulated. From simulation of the RAID system using the DEVS formalism, performance of the configurations are evaluated and compared with the analytical results while changing various system parameters.

RAID were proposed to stored double data or used to parity logging methode for error recovery. We describe a technique for automating the execution of redundant disk array operation, including recovery from errors, independent of array architecture. RAID5 provide highly reliable cost effective secondary storage with high performance for read access and large write accessed. It discusses the two architectural techniques used in disk arrays, striping across multiple disks to improve performance and redundancy to improve reliability. In this paper we compare with performance and reliability in RAID5 real/write to file and stripe size. than suggest to algorithm.
In this paper, we have designed and implemented the RAID controller board which connects to the host computer with serial ATA interface and connects to the disks with parallel ATA interface. Serial ATA interface is proposed to overcome the design limitation of parallel ATA while enabling the storage interface to scale with the slowing media rate demands for PC platforms. Serial ATA is to replace parallel ATA with the compatibility with existing operating systems and drivers, adding performance headroom for years to come. It Moreover, serial ATA provides even faster transfer rate of 150 Mbytes/s which is larger than that of current parallel ATA. The RAID controller board designed in this paper combines up to 4 disks with parallel ATA interface, and connects to PC host computer with serial ATA interface. We have implemented RAID controller using Verilog HDL language with FPGA chip. The RAID controller supports RAID level 0 and 1 functionality. Experimently, the average read/write performance of parallel ATA interface is about 30 Mbytes/s. Therefore, when 4 parallel disks is connected to the RAID controller board, we can get almost full throughput of serial ATA protocol using the RAID level 0 configuration with 4 disks.
In this paper, we propose a simple hardware reporting method for errors in soft-RAID systems of Linux OS. Compared with other reporting methods, the proposed method displays error status intuitively without any additional access process such as log-in process or home-page access. In particular, the server actively displays the error status, so the administrator can take immediate action. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, the experimental circuit was constructed and the experimental results showed that the error was actively displayed when an error occurred in the storage device. As such, a soft-RAID system can perform almost the same function as a hardware RAID system, thereby ensuring server data reliability at low cost.
