  • The purpose of the paper Is to discuss and estimate early Popper's theory of probability, which is presented in his book, The Logic of of Scientific Discovery. For this, Von Mises' frequency theory shall be discussed in detail, which is regarded as the most systematic and sophisticated frequency theory among others. Von Mises developed his theory to response to various critical questions such as how finite and empirical collectives can be represented in terms of infinite and mathematical collectives, and how the axiom of randomness can be mathematically formulated. But his theory still has another difficulty, which is concerned with the inconsistency between the axiom of convergence and the axiom of randomness. Defending the objective theory of probability, Popper tries to present his own frequency theory, solving the difficulty. He suggests that the axiom of convergence be given up and that the axiom of randomness be modified to solve Von Mises' problem. That is, Popper introduces the notion of ordinal selection and neighborhood selection to modify the axiom of randomness. He then shows that Bernoulli's theorem is derived from the modified axiom. Consequently, it can be said that Popper solves the problem of inconsistency which is regarded as crucial to Von Mises' theory. However, Popper's suggestion has not drawn much attention. I think it is because his theory seems anti-intuitive in the sense that it gives up the axiom of convergence which is the basis of the frequency theory So for more persuasive frequency theory, it is necessary to formulate the axiom of randomness to be consistent with the axiom of convergence.

  • In this study, two types of thrust stand modeling were proposed for the design of a thrust stand using flexure. Type A model generate combined load for tangential (thrust) and axial compressive load (self weight). And type B generate combined load for tangential and axial tensile load. The research was done by comparing the influence of the load between the models through a 1D calculation and computational analysis. The 1D calculated value and the computational analysis value were compared for a total of 10 sections and the results were confirmed to be very similar. In order to prove the validity of the analysis results, the equivalent stress was confirmed from the computational analysis of the flexure, and the production of the Type B model was selected from the evaluation of the yield condition (Von-Mises Yield Criterion).

  • The seismic performance of press fittings is studied, which is one of the weldless joints of stainless steel pipe used in the water piping of recent fire protection system. The piping of this study was constructed based on the piping connection reference of NFPA 13. The permissible displacement of the piping was set as the allowed amount which is given in the Building Structure Standard, and the measurements were repeated 10 times. The Von-mises stress of the piping was 2.48 and 1.25 times of the allowed amount of stress, which was less than the standard, noted three times on the NPPs Allowable Stress for Level D service loading. Therefore, the press fittings shows enough seismic performance.

  • Using the finite element method and Taguchi's design technique, the displacement in vertical direction, von Mises stress, and strain energy of the corrugation damper have been analyzed as functions of the extruded length and the thickness of the corrugation damper, and the upper and lower corner radii of the damper. The optimized profile design elements of a corrugation damper are very important for increasing a strain energy absorption capacity of a helmet structure, which is attacked by impulsive external forces. In this study, the optimized design data based on the Taguchi's method was computed as a corrugation damper length of L = 20 mm, a damper thickness of t = 2 mm, the upper corner radius of $R_1=4\;mm$, and the lower corner radius of $R_2=3\;mm$. The optimized design parameters of a corrugation damper indicated that the thickness and extruded length of a corrugation damper may affect to increase the strain energy, which absorbs the impact forces of the helmet.

  • This paper presents an elastic/plastic model that neglects strain hardening during loading, but accounts for the Bauschinger effect. These mathematical features of the model represent reasonably well the actual behavior of several materials such as high strength steels. Previous attempts to describe the behavior of this kind of materials have been restricted to a class of boundary value problems in which the state of stress in the plastic region is completely controlled by the yield stress in tension or torsion. In particular, the yield stress is supposed to be constant during loading and the forward plastic strain reduces the yield stress to be used to describe reversed yielding. The new model generalizes this approach on plane stress problems assuming that the material obeys the von Mises yield criterion during loading. Then, the model is adopted to describe reversed yielding in thin hollow discs subject to external pressure.

  • Objective : $Dynesys^{(R)}$ is one of the pedicle-based dynamic lumbar stabilization systems and good clinical outcome has been reported. However, the cylindrical spacer between the heads of the screws undergoes deformation during assembly of the system. The pre-strain probably change the angle of instrumented spine with time and oblique-shaped spacer may reduce the pre-strain. We analyzed patients with single-level stabilization with $Dynesys^{(R)}$ and simulated oblique-shaped spacer with finite element (FE) model analysis. Methods : Consecutive 14 patients, who underwent surgery for single-level lumbar spinal stenosis and were followed-up more than 24 months (M : F=6 : 8; age, $58.7{\pm}8.0$ years), were analyzed. Lumbar lordosis and segmental angle at the index level were compared between preoperation and postoperative month 24. The von Mises stresses on the obliquely-cut spacer ($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$) were calculated under the compressive force of 400 N and 10 Nm of moment with validated FE model of the L4-5 spinal motion segment with segmental angle of $16^{\circ}$. Results : Lumbar lordosis was not changed, while segmental angle was changed significantly from $-8.1{\pm}7.2^{\circ}$ to $-5.9{\pm}6.7^{\circ}$ (p<0.01) at postoperative month 24. The maximum von Mises stresses were markedly decreased with increased angle of the spacer up to $20^{\circ}$. The stress on the spacer was uneven with cylindrical spacer but it became even with the $15^{\circ}$ oblique spacer. Conclusion : The decreased segmental lordosis may be partially related to the pre-strain of Dynesys. Further clinical and biomechanical studies are required for relevant use of the system.

  • For survival data we sometimes want to test a log normality hypothesis that can be changed into normality by transforming the survival data. Hence the Shapiro-Wilk type statistic for normality is generalized to randomly censored data based on the Kaplan-Meier product limit estimate of the distribution function. Koziol and Green (1976) derived Cram$\acute{e}$r-von Mises statistic's randomly censored version under the simpl hypothesis. These two test statistics are compared through a simulation study. As for the distribution of censoring variables, we consider Koziol and Green (1976)'s model and other similar models. Through the simulation results, we can see that the power of the proposed statistic is higher than that of Koziol-Green statistic and that the proportion of the censored observations (rather than the distribution of censoring variables) has a strong influence on the power of the proposed statistic.

  • The probabilistic characterization of wind field characteristics is a significant task for fatigue reliability assessment of long-span railway bridges in wind-prone regions. In consideration of the effect of wind direction, the stochastic properties of wind field should be represented by a bivariate statistical model of wind speed and direction. This paper presents the construction of the bivariate model of wind speed and direction at the site of a railway arch bridge by use of the long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) data. The wind characteristics are derived by analyzing the real-time wind monitoring data, such as the mean wind speed and direction, turbulence intensity, turbulence integral scale, and power spectral density. A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method is proposed to formulate the joint distribution model of wind speed and direction. For the probability density function (PDF) of wind speed, a double-parameter Weibull distribution function is utilized, and a von Mises distribution function is applied to represent the PDF of wind direction. The SQP algorithm with multi-start points is used to estimate the parameters in the bivariate model, namely Weibull-von Mises mixture model. One-year wind monitoring data are selected to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method. The optimal model is jointly evaluated by the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and coefficient of determination, $R^2$. The obtained results indicate that the proposed SQP algorithm-based finite mixture modeling method can effectively establish the bivariate model of wind speed and direction. The established bivariate model of wind speed and direction will facilitate the wind-induced fatigue reliability assessment of long-span bridges.

  • In this study, an imputation model using circular probability distribution was developed in order to overcome problems of missing data from a traffic survey. The existing ad-hoc or heuristic, model-based and algorithm-based imputation techniques were reviewed through previous studies, and then their limitations for imputing missing traffic volume data were revealed. The statistical computing language 'R' was employed for model construction, and a mixture of von Mises probability distribution, which is classified as symmetric, and unimodal circular probability were finally fitted on the basis of traffic volume data at survey stations in urban and rural areas, respectively. The circular probability distribution model largely proved to outperform a dummy variable regression model in regards to various evaluation conditions. It turned out that circular probability distribution models depict circularity of hourly volumes well and are very cost-effective and robust to changes in missing mechanisms.

  • Concrete plasticity models fol the analysis of reinforced concrete members in plane stress are studied. The proposed plasticity model for reinforced concrete provides a unified approach combining plasticity theory and damage models. It addresses strength mhancement under rnultiaxial compression. and tensile cracking damage. The model uses multiple failure criteria for compressive crushing and tensile cracking. For tensile cracking behavior. rotating-crack and fixed-crack plasticity models are compared. As crushing failure criterion, the Drucker-Prager and the von Mises models are used for comparison. The model uses now and existing damnge models fbr tension softening, tension stiffening. and compression softening dup to tensilt. cracking. Finite element analyses using the unified method are compatxd with existing rxpcrimcntal r.esults. To vei.ify the proposcd crushing and cracking plasticity models, the experiments have load capacities govc11.nc.d either by compressive crushing of'concrete or by yi~lding of' reinforcing steel.
