  • In this paper, R-wave detection algorithm using refractory period to reflect the depolarization and repolarization of the myocardial cells of the heart is proposed. The proposed algorithm detects R-peaks using the features of R-wave and variable refractory period. First, the proposed algorithm extracts candidate R-peaks that have a relatively high potential and calculates the refractory period based on the kurtosis and potential for candidate R-peaks. Next, R-peak is determined by morphological features of the R-wave within the refractory period. In addition, due to less computation in the proposed algorithm, real-time processing is possible. The algorithm is applied to all records of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and the obtained results show a competitive detection rate of over 99.7%.

  • Whether a person is feeling sleepy or reasonably awake is important safety information in many areas, such as humans operating in traffic or in heavy industry. The changes of body signals have been mostly researched by looking at electroencephalogram(EEG) signals but more and more other medical signals are being examined. In our study, an electrocardiogram(ECG) signal is measured at a sampling rate of 100 Hz and used to try to distinguish the possible differences in signal between the two states: awake and drowsy. Practical tests are conducted using a wireless sensor node connected to a wearable ECG sensor, and an ECG signal is transmitted wirelessly to a base station connected to a server PC. Through the QRS complex in the ECG analysis it is possible to obtain much information that is helpful for diagnosing different types of cardiovascular disease. A program is made with MATLAB for digital signal filtering and graphing as well as recognizing the parts of the QRS complex within the signal. Drowsiness detection is performed by evaluating the R peaks, R-R interval, interval between R and S peaks and the duration of the QRS complex..

  • In this study, two algorithms for detecting respiratory rate from Portable ECG device were presented. The first algorithms counts the number of ECG samples between R-R peaks, which varies according to respiratory states of patients, such as, exhalation and inhalation. The second algorithms detects the rate by measuring the size of R wave, which also varies according to the respiratory status of patient. These two algorithms were programmed to the laboratory developed ECG device and their usefulness was verified in laboratory environment.

  • In order to improve the performance of temperature field measurements by CT-TDLAS (Computer Tomography Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy), a new reconstruction algorithm, named two-ratios-of-three-peaks method is proposed in this paper. Further, two methods for selecting appropriate initial values of the iterative calculation of CT-TDLAS are proposed. One is MLOS (multiplicative line of sight) method and the other one is ALOS (additive line of sight) method. Two-ratios-of-three-peaks (2R3P) algorithm combined with MART (multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique) is finally developed for the enhancements of reconstructive calculations. The results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional one-ratio-of-two-peaks (1R2P) algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of this algorithm, numerical test has been performed using phantom Gaussian temperature distributions with $11{\times}11$ square mesh. The performance of the constructed algorithm has been demonstrated by comparing the results obtained in actual burner experiments with those obtained by thermocouples. It has been verified that 2R3P algorithm with MART and MLOS showed best performance than that of 1R2P algorithm.

  • In the seas around the Korean Peninsula, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton related to North Pacific regime shifts was investigated to understand the reaction of the ecosystem to climate change using long-term data on zooplankton biomass (1965-2000) and the abundance of four major zooplankton groups: copepods, amphipods, chaetognaths, and euphausiids (1978-2000). In general, the zooplankton biomass showed a large peak in spring and a small peak in autumnin Korean waters, but there was a slight difference in the peak time depending on the location and the period before and after the North Pacific regime shift. The zooplankton biomass showed conspicuous seasonal peaks in R-III (1990-2000) compared to R-I (1965-1976) and R-II (1977-1988), and the seasonal peak shifted from the autumn in R-II to the spring in R-III. The peak of copepods and euphausiids in abundance was from April to June, while chaetognaths peaked from August to October. We postulate that the time lag between the peaks for copepods and chaetognaths results from the predator-prey relationship. The regime shift in 1989 did not alter the seasonal cycle of the four major zooplankton groups, although it enhanced their production. The seasonal peaks of the four major zooplankton groups did not shift, while the seasonal peaks of the zooplankton biomass did shift. This was not only becausethe zooplankton biomass included other mesozooplankton groups but also because the abundance of the four major zooplankton groups increased significantly in spring.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method for extracting predominant melody of polyphonic music based on harmonic structure. Harmonic structure is an important feature parameter of monophonic signal that has spectral peaks at the integer multiples of its fundamental frequency. We extract all fundamental frequency candidates contained in the polyphonic signal by verifying the required condition of harmonic structure. Then, we combine those harmonic peaks corresponding to each extracted fundamental frequency and assign a rank to each after calculating its harmonic average energy. We run pitch tracking based on the rank of extracted fundamental frequency and continuity of fundamental frequency, and determine the predominant melody. For the query by singing/humming (QbSH) task, we proposed Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) based matching engine. Our system reduces false alarm by combining the distances of multiple DTW processes. To improve the performance, we introduced the asymmetric sense, pitch level compensation, and distance intransitiveness to DTW algorithm.

  • This study was carried out to know the variation of soybean seed proteins, 11S and 7S globulins, and their amino acid compositions among different colored soybean varieties, 'Danbaegkong' (yellow), 'Pureunkong' (green) 'Jinyulkong' (brown), and 'Geoumjeongkong l' (black). Soybean seed proteins showed a wide range in molecular size, but the electrophoresis patterns of total seed protein subunits showed a similarity among different colored soybean varieties. Amino acid compositions of total seed proteins were similar for all soybean varieties tested. However, soybean varieties showed low composition rates in sulfur containing amino acids. The composition rates of cysteine and methionine in the 11S globulins were higher than those of total seed proteins and 7S globulins. Glutamic acid and glycine were higher in the 11S and 7S globulins than those of total seed proteins. However, the levels of methionine and phenylalanine are high in the 11S globulins, but those of valine and lysin are slightly lower than the 7S globulins. By using HPLC, we tried to analyse the soybean seed proteins. The 11S globulin was composed of 10 major peaks whereas the 7S globulin was composed of 4 major peaks. The composition rates of 11S related proteins have a tendency to increasing during the maturing whereas those of 7S related proteins have a tendency to decreasing. Composition rates of each peaks among different colored soybean varieties suggested that soybean seed proteins are varied, although they showed similarity in the electrophoresis patterns, and understanding of this characteristics is important for the utilization of soybeans.

  • The importance of financial risk management has been highlighted after several recent incidences of global financial crisis. One of the issues in financial risk management is how to measure the risk; currently, the most widely used risk measure is the Value at Risk(VaR). We can consider to estimate VaR using extreme value theory if the financial data have heavy tails as the recent market trend. In this paper, we study estimations of VaR using Peaks over Threshold(POT), which is a common method of modeling fat-tailed data using extreme value theory. To use POT, we first estimate parameters of the Generalized Pareto Distribution(GPD). Here, we compare three different methods of estimating parameters of GPD by comparing the performance of the estimated VaR based on KOSPI 5 minute-data. In addition, we simulate data from normal inverse Gaussian distributions and examine two parameter estimation methods of GPD. We find that the recent methods of parameter estimation of GPD work better than the maximum likelihood estimation when the kurtosis of the return distribution of KOSPI is very high and the simulation experiment shows similar results.

  • We demonstrate here a dynamic structure of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) as revealed by $^{13}$ C NMR studies on [3_$^{13}$ C]_,[1-$^{13}$ C]Ala- and/or Val-labeled wild type and a variety of site-directed mutants at ambient temperature. For this purpose, well-resolved (up to twelve) I$^{13}$ C NMR peaks were assigned with reference to the displacement of peaks due to the conformation-dependent I$^{13}$ C chemical shifts and reduced peak-intensities due to site-directed mutations. Revealed bR structure was not rigid as anticipated from 2D crystals of hexagonal array but a dynamically heterogeneous, undergoing a variety of local fluctuations depending upon specific site with frequency range of 10$^2$ -10$^{8}$ Hz. In particular, dynamics- dependent suppression of peaks turned out to be very sensitive to the motion of 10$^{-4}$ s and 10$^{-5}$ s interfered with frequency of magic angle spinning and proton decoupling, respectively. It is also noteworthy that such dynamic feature is strongly dependent upon the manner of 2D crystalline packing: $^{13}$ C NMR peaks of monomeric bR yielded either highly broadened or completely suppressed signals, depending upon the type of $^{13}$ C-labeled amino-acid residues.

  • The normalized line profiles of VV Cep have been calculated by integrating the equation of transfer. The Sobolev theory was adopted and the wind velocity distribution was assumed to be V(r) = V$\infty(1-R_c/r)^{1/2}$. The peaks of the line profiles for the phase 0.06 and 0.80 appear at near half maximum and zero velocity surface of the wind, respectively.
