  • BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a major health concern in current scenario which has been found to affect people of almost all ages. The disease has huge impact on global health; therefore, alternate methods apart from insulin injection are being explored to cure diabetes. Therefore, this review mainly focuses on the current status and therapeutic potential of stem cells mainly mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for Type 1 diabetes mellitus in preclinical animal models as well as humans. METHODS: Current treatment for Type 1 diabetes mellitus mainly includes use of insulin which has its own limitations and also the underlying mechanism of diseases is still not explored. Therefore, alternate methods to cure diabetes are being explored. Stem cells are being investigated as an alternative therapy for treatment of various diseases including diabetes. Few preclinical studies have also been conducted using undifferentiated MSCs as well as in vitro MSCs differentiated into ${\beta}$ islet cells. RESULTS: These stem cell transplant studies have highlighted the benefits of MSCs, which have shown promising results. Few human trials using stem cells have also affirmed the potential of these cells in alleviating the symptoms. CONCLUSION: Stem cell transplantation may prove to be a safe and effective treatment for patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.

  • Recently, the use of domestic products securing domestic technology is encouraged, because of export restrictions of the countries or DMSMS(diminishing manufacturing sources and shortages). Domestic weapon systems are actively focused on the parts localization process of R&D projects based on Systems Engineering. However, it is the only way to do technical review for Systems Engineering process up to now. There is a case of application in Localization with Systems Engineering process, but the SE activity is not enough. This study is how to apply Systems Engineering process to Localization effectively based on real cases.

  • The PMB(performance measurement baseline) is the total time-phased budget plan against which program performance is measured. Additionally it is the schedule for expenditure of the resources allocated to accomplish program scope and schedule objectives, and is formed by the budget assigned. In this paper, we suggest an improvement of the R & D(research and development) program for defense acquisition by using the PMB and an application of the IBR(integrated baseline review) to review the PMB for project manager of the defense agency.

  • Currently, nanotechnology is widely applied in various industrial fields and is rapidly emerging as a promising future technology. In food industries, nanotechnology is used to enhance food quality and safety. Numerous cutting-edge studies on the advantages of nanotechnology have been conducted in the fields of food processing, food ingredients and additives, food packaging, and food engineering for optimal health. The market for these areas of research has grown steadily, and is expected to continue to do so. Because of this, R&D for nanotechnology that can be used effectively in food industries is being performed by several companies, as well as in academic research institutions around the world. This review describes the recent global R&D trends that have been in progress for two key areas: food processing and food packaging.

  • To meet needs of R&D application reinforcement on geoscience and mineral resources area, we suggest public R&D institute's strategies and system for the application including supplement of technology licensing office (TLO). We review the former studies on technology transfer successfulness criteria and difficulties from the viewpoint of korean small&medium size firms and public R&D researchers, and then benchmark a japanese public R&D institute of industrial science and technology, which was newly integrated and developed with Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ). Application analysis index and the reinforcement strategy hierarchy for R&D project are established on geoscience and mineral resources area, and applied on the prioritized research projects of KIGAM. Empirical investigation was carried out on KIGAM researchers with practical studied analysis on questionnaire and intensive interview. Result of the analysis is identified and compared with the case in Japan. It is shown that KIGAM researchers feel their technology transfer activities are not yet integrated with TLO and commercialized R&D are not cooperated with them. This study proposes industrial cooperation coordinators in the categorized R&D divisions of public R&D institute based on the different R&D characteristics and needs in R&D application strategies.

  • Studies have shown that research and development has positively impacted the upbringing of construction industry. However, its economic effect has not yet been fully investigated. This study develops an economic effect analysis model for R&D performance. In-depth interview and review of the literature produced a total of 11 performance indicators that considered the public characteristics of construction industry. A case study which involved the Expressway & Transportation Research Institute was conducted in order to verify the proposed model. The result showed that the return on investment of the institute was 3.3 times of the R&D investment. The proposed model is expected to help researchers analyze an economic effect analysis model for R&D performance.
