Practical Challenges Associated with Catalyst Development for the Commercialization of Li-air Batteries

  • Li-air cell is an exotic type of energy storage and conversion device considered to be half battery and half fuel cell. Its successful commercialization highly depends on the timely development of key components. Among these key components, the catalyst (i.e., the core portion of the air electrode) is of critical importance and of the upmost priority. Indeed, it is expected that these catalysts will have a direct and dramatic impact on the Li-air cell's performance by reducing overpotentials, as well as by enhancing the overall capacity and cycle life of Li-air cells. Unfortunately, the technological advancement related to catalysts is sluggish at present. Based on the insights gained from this review, this sluggishness is due to challenges in both the commercialization of the catalyst, and the fundamental studies pertaining to its development. Challenges in the commercialization of the catalyst can be summarized as 1) the identification of superior materials for Li-air cell catalysts, 2) the development of fundamental, material-based assessments for potential catalyst materials, 3) the achievement of a reduction in both cost and time concerning the design of the Li-air cell catalysts. As for the challenges concerning the fundamental studies of Li-air cell catalysts, they are 1) the development of experimental techniques for determining both the nano and micro structure of catalysts, 2) the attainment of both repeatable and verifiable experimental characteristics of catalyst degradation, 3) the development of the predictive capability pertaining to the performance of the catalyst using fundamental material properties. Therefore, under the current circumstances, it is going to be an extremely daunting task to develop appropriate catalysts for the commercialization of Li-air batteries; at least within the foreseeable future. Regardless, nano materials are expected to play a crucial role in this field.

Effect of Different Commercial Oligosaccharides on the Fermentation Properties in Kefir during Fermentation

  • Kefir is traditional fermented milk produced by various lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast, which produce lactic acid, ethanol, carbon dioxide, and other flavor compounds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different commercial oligosaccharides, such as maltotriose, fructooligosaccharide (FOS), galactooligosaccharide (GOS), and isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO), on the fermentation properties of kefir. First, we determined the acidification kinetic parameters, such as $V_{max}$, $t_{max}$(h), $t_{pH5.0}$(h), and $t_f$(h) of fermented milk supplemented with 4% (w/w) of different oligosaccharides. The probiotic survival and chemical composition (pH, organic acids profile, and ethanol content) of kefir during fermentation were also measured. Compared to control fermentation, all oligosaccharides increased acidification rate and reduced the time to complete fermentation (pH 4.7). The addition of FOS, in particular, resulted in the lowest $t_f$(h) and the highest populations of LAB and yeast during fermentation. All oligosaccharides increased ethanol production during fermentation. Further, significant differences were observed in the formation rates of six organic acids during fermentation. This study provided comparative data on the properties of commercial oligosaccharides for kefir manufacturing. Consequently, FOS especially had the potential for adequate and effective oligosaccharides in commercial kefir for the improvement of cost- and time-effectiveness.

소유 집중도가 기업 연구개발 투자에 미치는 영향: 국내 제약 산업을 중심으로 (How Does the Concentration of Ownership Impact R&D Investments? Evidence from Korean Pharmaceutical Firms)

  • 본 연구는 2004년부터 2008년까지 8년간 국내 제약 기업들을 대상으로 소유 집중도가 기업의 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석한다. 특히 소유 경영 체제 또는 전문 경영 체제가 소유 집중도와 연구개발투자 간의 관계에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 분석 결과 최대주주 지분율과 연구개발투자는 역 U자 형태의 상관관계가 있으며, 소유 또는 전문 경영 체제 여부는 역 U자 관계의 강도에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 전문 경영 체제하에서는 소유 집중도가 낮을 경우 소유 집중도의 추가적인 증가는 대리인 비용을 줄여 연구개발투자를 소유 경영 체제하에서 보다 더 크게 증가시키지만, 소유 집중도가 높을 경우 소유 집중도의 추가적인 증가는 지나친 위험 노출 증가에 대한 고려로 연구개발투자를 소유 경영 체제하에서 보다 더 빠르게 감소시킨다.

  • In this paper, PV modules using a low-temperature conductive film(LT-CF) as a bonding material between a cell and a solder free ribbon were produced and chracterized, which is more environmental-friendly, cost effective and high efficient. Mainly, filed electrical performance of PV modules using three different types of bonding material; a convetional solder ribbon(SR), a LT-CF and a light-capturing Ribbon(LCR) were compared to comfirm the feasibility of LT-CF as a bonding material. The filed test were conducted for 3 months and results were discussed in terms of amount of output energy production and efficiency.

Pareto 최적점 기반 다목적함수 기법에 의한 이중선각유조선의 최적 구조설계 (Optimum Structural Design of D/H Tankers by using Pareto Optimal based Multi-objective function Method)

  • A structural design system is developed for the optimum design of double hull tankers based on the multi-objective function method. As a multi-objective function method, Pareto optimal based random search method is adopted to find the minimum structural weight and fabrication cost. The fabrication cost model is developed by considering the welding technique, welding poses and assembly stages to manage the fabrication man-hour and process. In this study, a new structural design is investigated due to the rapidly increased material cost. Several optimum structural designs on the basis of high material cost are carried out based on the Pareto optimal set obtained by the random search method. The design results are compared with existing ship, which is designed under low material cost.

New Method for Simultaneous Quantification of 12 Ginsenosides in Red Ginseng Powder and Extract: In-house Method Validation

  • For quality control of components in Korean red ginseng powder and extract, a new method for simultaneous quantification of 12 ginsenosides ($Rg_1$, Re, Rf, $Rh_1$, $Rg_2$[S], $Rg_2$[R], $Rb_1$, Rc, $Rb_2$, Rd, $Rg_3$[S], and $Rg_3$[R]) was studied. Compared to the official method for quantification of marker substances (ginsenosides $Rg_1$ and $Rb_1$), the proposed methods were guaranteed by in-house method validation. Several criteria such as linearity, specificity, precision and accuracy were evaluated. For red ginseng powder, recovery (averaging 95% to 105%) was calculated, and analysis of variance was carried out to estimate the relative standard deviation (0.20% to 2.12%). For red ginseng extract, the average recovery rate was 90% to 99% and the relative standard deviation was 0.39% to 2.40%. These results indicate that the proposed method could be used in the laboratory for determination of 12 ginsenosides in red ginseng powder and extract. In addition, this method was found to be suitable for quality control of ginseng products and potentially offer time and cost benefits.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic inventory system model under the so-called continuous-review policy with a Poisson one-at-a-time demand process, iid customer inter-arrival times {Xi}, backorders allowed, and constant procurement lead time $\gamma$. The distributions of the so-called inventory position process {$IP_{(t-r)}$} and lead time demand process {$D_{(t-r,t)}$} are formulated in terms of cumulative demand by time t, {$N_t$}. Then, for the long-run expected average annual inventory cost expression, the "ensemble" average is estimated, where the cost variations for stock ordering, holding and backorders are considered stationary.

  • 기술정책은 기술획득을 위한 민간투자가 적정수준 이하로 과소투자되는 성향을 보전하는 중요한 정책수단이다. 그러나 기술정책과 관련된 정부정책에 대한 정량적 평가는 아직도 초보적 수준에 머물러 있다. 본 연구는 과제수준에서 기술개발지원제도의 성과를 계량경제학적 모형(Probit)을 이용하여 분석하고 있다. 정부의 지원, 민간부문의 대응 투자(현금과 현물), 기술개발과제 수행형태, 수행주체간의 역할 등이 기술적 성과에 미치는 영향을 가설을 검증하는 형태로 살펴보았다. 총투자규모 보다는 투자의 구성 및 내용이 중요하고, 기업의 대응투자, 특히 현금투자의 정도가 기술적 성과에 크게 영향을 미치며, 기업의 현금투자와 현물투자는 대체재 관계라는 정책적 시사점이 높은 결과들이 도출되었다. 이러한 결과들은 향후 추가적인 연구와 더불어 새로운 국가기술 개발지원제도의 기획은 물론 그 효율성 평가에도 많은 도움과 함께 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

초소형위성 비용분석 사례연구를 통한 비용분석 업무발전 방향에 대한 고찰 (A Study on Work Development Direction of Cost Analysis through Cost Analysis of Micro Satellite)

  • Purpose: It emphasizes the importance of cost analysis for weapons systems that require enormous develop- ment costs, analyzes the problems of cost analysis steps from a practical point of view, and presents the direction of business development in terms of cost analysis reliability, timeliness, and efficiency. Methods: It analyzes the R&D cost of Micro satellites with a complex cost structure and large scale according to engineering estimation procedures, derives major analysis step-by-step problems, and presents business development directions. Results: Problems with standards and assumptions, data collection, cost division structure, and cost estimation methods were derived through the micro satellite cost analysis process, and business development directions such as expanding common standards, standardizing basic data, standardizing cost division structures and cost items, and data asset were presented. Conclusion: In order to develop work in terms of cost analysis reliability, timeliness, and efficiency, it is important to prepare and standardize standards and rules for detailed tasks at each analysis stage, and through this, it is expected that high utilization value and systematic cost data will be assetized in the future.

  • Roll to roll (R2R) system, known as 'web processing', is the process of producing these electronic devices on a roll of flexible plastic. With the need of improved performance and productivity in R2R industry, effective control and on-line supervision for web quality is essential. In this report, we present a system for on-line measurement of wrinkles, one of defects incurring due to compressive stresses developed in the web. This system is able to capture an image generated when a well defined line shape laser beam passes through a transparent web. The system calculates 3D shape information, including the height of the wrinkle on the web, and displays the images for the shape information of the web in real time. By using area scan camera and machine vision laser, this system takes more advantages of setting up as a simple and low cost system compared to the line scan camera systems that widely used in web manufacturing. Specific calibration method and analysis on the achievable accuracy will be discussed.
