  • Despite the importance of questionnaires, little survey methodology research on questionnaire design has been conducted in Korea. The purpose of this study was to explore whether two questionnaire forms (close-ended vs. open-ended questions) about 'the most important problem in Korea' elicited similar responses. During the 2016 Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), a random half of respondents were asked the open-ended question form and the remaining half were asked the close-ended question form. While the economy is the most mentioned response (35% vs. 33.2%) to both close-ended and open-ended question forms, there is similarity in the order of highly mentioned responses if we consider that 'politics' is not provided as one of response categories in the close-ended question form. The order of second to fourth response category is crime (24.4%), education (15.4%), and poverty (6.3%) to the closed-ended question form, and politics (10.8%), crime (9.5%), and education (7.6%) to the open-ended question form. Also, the characteristics of respondents who responded with the economy as being the most important are slightly different between the two halves in terms of age, household income, and satisfaction with economic condition. Our findings suggest that we need to be careful when we adopt questions developed in other countries and to consider using survey experiments in pre-testing questionnaire items.

  • In this study, we surveyed on the 3rd and 4th grade teachers' perception and teaching practices towards open-ended question in the elementary mathematics textbook in the revised 7th curriculum. According to the result, teachers understood the purpose of open-ended question in general, but they recognized some problems in terms of open-ended question itself, difficulties found when they dealt with open-ended question in their classes, teacher's guide and teacher training. This research suggests ways of improvement of open-ended question on the basis of the survey results.

  • The tap water plays a critical role in our daily life by providing clean water for drinking as well as for residential use. Its importance, however, is often hidden and criticized in mass media because drinking the unprocessed tap water as a primary source of drinking water is very low comparing to other countries. This is because survey tool in Korea is often different from those in other countries so their results on the tap water cannot be directly compared without analysis on survey questionnaire. Therefore, we examplified cases showing the difference of questions of each country and discussed the reason why results of tap water intake should not be compared without analysis on the questions. Also, distrust on Arisu without rational reason is known as the first reason of distrust on the tap water. However, it was not the ultimate reason of distrust on the tap water. To verify, we designed survey questions in a tricky way that the same question was asked twice with different choices in the survey questionnaire. Most of the people who distrust Arisu without rational reason at the first question were selected different choices and significantly reduced in the second question. This proved that the ratio of distrust on the tap water is not actually the right reason and that by providing more choices, people's distrust on the tap water without rational reason can turn into more specific reasons.

  • Randomized response technique is a survey technique for eliminating evasive answer bias. This technique is popular in social survey for sensitive issues. In this paper we present a simple and obvious procedure for estimating the population proportion of a sensitive group. Here, we shows the weak point in the method of Kim and Warde (2005). Also, it is found that the proposed procedure is more efficient than the ones of Warner (1965) and Kim and Warde (2005). Lastly we discuss the conditions that the suggested method will be more efficienct.

  • For improving the quality of survey dat a of sensitive character, we suggest a conditional in direct survey method. In th at method, only the respondents who answer directly to the less sensitive question respond indirectly to the more sensitive one by using the one sample unrelated question randomized response technique with the known $\pi_y$, the true proportion of unrelated group Y. We extend it to two sample method when $\pi_y$ is unknown. We also consider the case that people who possess less sensitive character answer untruthfully. Finally we compare our method with the methods of Greenberg et al. and Carr et al..

  • Although telephone surveys are an attractive alternative to household interviews it is important to determine whether the data collected by the two methods are comparable. To answer this question, findings from the telephone survey literatures are examined in the view point of i) direct effect which means expressions of preference of the interview detail of answers on open questions and item missing data rates ii) statistical estimates and iii) differences of interviewers and data collection modes. Differences are explained by social desirability effects on the telephone, cognitive ability of the survey question, and mode effects and interviewer effects.

  • The study aimed at investigating preservice elementary school teachers' statistical reasoning when they posed survey questions as they engaged in statistical problem solving, and analyzing how their statistical reasoning affect the subsequent stages. 24 groups of sophomore students(80 students) from two education universities conducted statistical problem solving and completed statistical report, and 22 of them were analyzed. As a result, 9 statistical reasoning were shown when preservice teachers posed survey questions. Among them, question clarification oriented reasoning and variability based reasoning were not exclusively focused upon in the previous research. In order to investigate how statistical reasoning in posing survey questions affected subsequent stages, we examined difficulties and issues that preservice teachers had when they engaged in analyses and conclusion stage described in their report. Consequently, preservice teachers' difficulties were related to population relevant reasoning, category level reasoning, standardization reasoning, alignment to question reasoning, and question clarification oriented reasoning. While previous studies did not focus on question posing stage, this study claimed the necessity of emphasizing various statistical reasoning in question posing and importance of teaching and learning method of appropriate statistical reasoning in question posing.

  • Background: Although a growing number of guidelines and clinical researches are available for immunosuppressive treatment of post-transplantation, there is no clinical practice guideline for the care of kidney transplant recipients in Korea. Selection of a researchable question is the most important step in conducting qualified guideline development. Thus, we aimed to formulate key questions for Korean guideline to aid clinical decision-making for immunosuppressive treatment. Methods: Based on previous published guidelines review, a first survey was constructed with 29 questions in the range of immunosuppressive treatments. The experts were asked to rate the clinical importance of the question using a 5-point Likert scale. The questions reached 60% or more from the first survey and additional new questions were included in the second survey. In analyzing the responses to items rated on the 9-point scale, consensus agreement on each question was defined as 75% or more of experts rating 7 to 9. Results: In the first survey, 50 experts were included. Among the 29 questions, 27 were derived to get 60% or more importance and 3 new questions were additionally identified. Through the second survey, 9 questions were selected that experts reached consensus on 75% and over of the options. Finally, we developed key questions using PICO (patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome) methodology. Conclusion: The experts reached a high level of consensus on many of key questions in the survey. Final key questions provide direction for developing clinical practice guideline in the immunosuppressive treatment of transplantation.

  • Purpose: This study aims to study the perception of merchants and customers about the odor problem of traditional markets in Wonju, Gangwon-do. Research design, data and methodology: A survey was conducted to investigate the perception. The survey consisted of 11 questions for merchants and 12 questions for customers. Results: In a survey of merchants - The question 'What kind of smell did you smell at the traditional market?' was investigated with multiple responses. Regarding the odor experience, unclean odor was the highest with 105 votes (36%), followed by rotting odor with 82 votes (28.1%) and other odors with 44 votes (15.1%). In a survey of customers - The question 'What kind of smell did you smell at the traditional market?' was investigated with multiple responses. As a result of the survey, filthy smell was the highest with 98 votes (43.2%). Next, rotten smell was found with 60 votes (26.4%) and others with 31 votes (13.7%). Conclusions: If the odor problem in the traditional market is solved, the economic and health damage to the merchants will be reduced. Further, it will help to revitalize traditional markets by increasing customer visits. As a solution, it is judged that it is good to study the direction of the establishment of a real-time monitoring system and the preparation and application of odor removal measures.
