  • Aggregation join queries are an important class of queries over data streams. These queries involve both join and aggregation operations, with window-based joins followed by an aggregation on the join output. All existing research address join query optimization and aggregation query optimization as separate problems. We observe that, by putting them within the same scope of query optimization, more efficient query execution plans are possible through more versatile query transformations. The enabling idea is to perform aggregation before join so that the join execution time may be reduced. There has been some research done on such query transformations in relational databases, but none has been done in data streams. Doing it in data streams brings new challenges due to the incremental and continuous arrival of tuples. These challenges are addressed in this paper. Specifically, we first present a query processing model geared to facilitate query transformations and propose a query transformation rule specialized to work with streams. The rule is simple and yet covers all possible cases of transformation. Then we present a generic query processing algorithm that works with all alternative query execution plans possible with the transformation, and develop the cost formulas of the query execution plans. Based on the processing algorithm, we validate the rule theoretically by proving the equivalence of query execution plans. Finally, through extensive experiments, we validate the cost formulas and study the performances of alternative query execution plans.

  • The transformation time among queries in the database management system (DBMS) is responsible for the execution time of users' queries, because a conventional DBMS does not consider the transformation cost when queries are transformed for execution. To reduce the transformation time (cost reduction) during execution, we propose an optimal query transformation method by exploring queries from a cost-based point of view. This cost-based point of view means considering the cost whenever queries are transformed for execution. Toward that end, we explore and compare set off heuristic, linear, and exhaustive cost-based transformations. Further, we describe practical methods of cost-based transformation integration and some query transformation problems. Our results show that, some cost-based transformations significantly improve query execution time. For instance, linear and heuristic transformed queries work 43% and 74% better than exhaustive queries.

  • In semantic information retrieval, we first need to build domain ontology and second, we need to convert the users' search keywords into a standard query such as SPARQL. In this paper, we propose a method that can automatically convert the users' search keywords into the SPARQL queries. Furthermore, our method can ensure effective performance in a specific domain such as law. Our method constructs the keyword history ontology by associating each keyword with a series of information when there are multiple keywords. The constructed ontology will convert keyword history ontology into SPARQL query. The automatic transformation method of SPARQL query proposed in the paper is converted into the query statement that is deemed the most appropriate by the user's intended keywords. Our study is based on the existing legal ontology constructions that supplement and reconstruct schema and use it as experiment. In addition, design and implementation of a semantic search tool based on legal domain and conduct experiments. Based on the method proposed in this paper, the semantic information retrieval based on the keyword is made possible in a legal domain. And, such a method can be applied to the other domains.

  • Due to the popularity of location-based services, the amount of generated spatial data in daily life has been dramatically increasing. Therefore, spatial database outsourcing has become popular for data owners to reduce the spatial database management cost. The most important consideration in database outsourcing is meeting the privacy requirements and guarantying the integrity of the query result. However, most of existing database transformation techniques do not support both of the data privacy and integrity of the query result. To solve this problem, we propose a spatial data transformation scheme that utilizes the shearing transformation with rotation shifting. In addition, we described the attack models to measure the data privacy of database transformation schemes. Finally, we demonstrated through the experimental evaluations that our scheme provides high level of data protection against different kinds of attack models, compared to the existing schemes, while guaranteeing the integrity of the query result sets.

  • RFID middleware systems collect and filter the RFID streaming data gathered continuously by numerous readers in order to process requests from applications. These requests are called continuous queries because they are kept on executing during certain periods. To enhance the performance of the middleware, it is required to build an index to process the continuous queries efficiently. Several approaches of building an index on not data records but queries, called Query Index, are proposed and widely used for evaluating continuous queries over streaming data. The EPCglobal proposed an Event Cycle Specification (ECSpec) model, which is a standard query interface for RFID applications. Continuous queries based on ECSpec consist of a large number of segments for representing the query conditions. The problem with using any of the existing query indexes on these continuous queries is that it takes a long time to build the index because it is necessary to insert a large number of segments into the index. To solve this problem, we propose an Aggregate Transformation that converts a group of segments into a compressed data which is representative of the segments. We compare the performance of a transformed index with the existing query indexes.

  • In previous research, we suggested a business process structured query language(BPSQL) for information extraction and retrieval in the business process framework, and used an existing query language with the tablization for each layer within the framework, but still had a problem to manually build with the specification of each layer information of BFP. To solve this problem, we suggest automatically to build the schema based business process model with model-to-text conversion technique. This procedure consists of 1) defining each meta-model of the entire structure and of database schema, and 2) also defining model transformation rules for it. With this procedure, we can automatically transform from defining through meta-modeling of an integrated information system designed to the schema based model information table specification defined of the entire layer each layer specification with model-to-text conversion techniques. It is possible to develop the efficiently integrated information system.

  • One of the most difficult problems in building a distributed GIS lies in the heterogeneity of spatial databases. In particular, positional mismatches between spatial databases, which arise due to several reasons, may incur incorrect query results. They result in unreliable outputs of query processing. One simple solution is to correct positional data in spatial databases at each site, according to the most accurate one. This solution is however not practical in cases where the autonomy of each database should be respected. In this paper, we propose a spatial query processing method without correcting positional data in each spatial database. Instead of correcting positional data, we dynamically transform a given query region or position onto each space where spatial objects of each site are located. Our proposed method is based on an elastic transformation method by using delaunay triangulation. Accuracy of this method is proved mathematically, and is confirmed by an experiment. Moreover, we implemented using common use database system for usefulness verification of this method.

  • This paper presents a physical storage design method for image access structures using transformation techniques of multidimensional file organizations in image information systems. Physical storage design is the process of determining the access structures to provide optimal query processing performance for a given set of queries. So far, there has been no such attempt in the image information system. We first show that the number of pages to be accessed decreases as the shape of the given retrieval query region and that of the data page region become similar in the transformed domain space. Using these properties, we propose a method for finding an optimal image access structure by controlling the shapes of the page regions. For the performance evaluation, we have performed many experiments with a multidimensional file organization using transformation techniques. The results indicate that our proposed method is at least one to maximum five times faster than the conventional method according to the query pattern within the scope of the experiments. The result confirms that the proposed physical storage design method is useful in a practical way.

  • Range query is one of the most important operations for spatial objects, it retrieves all spatial objects that overlap a given query region in multi-dimensional space. The DOT(DOuble Transformation) is known as an efficient indexing methods, it transforms the MBR of a spatial object into a single numeric value using a space filling curve, and stores the value in a $B^+$-tree. The DOT index is possible to be employed as a primary index for spatial objects. However, the range query processing based on the DOT index requires much overhead for spatial transformations to get the query region in the final space. Also, the detailed range query processing method for 2-dimensional spatial objects has not been studied yet in this paper, we propose an efficient multi-dimensional range query processing technique based on the DOT index. The proposed technique exploits the regularities in the moving patterns of space filling curves to divide a query region into a set of maximal sub-legions within which space filling curves traverse without interruption. Such division reduces the number of spatial transformations required to perform the range query and thus improves the performance of range query processing. A visual simulator is developed to show the evaluation method and the performance of our technique.
