Location-Based Services (LBSs) provide results to queries according to the location of the client issuing the query. In LBS, techniques such as caching and prefetching are effective approaches to reducing the data transmission from a server and query response time. However, they can lead to cache inefficiency and network overload due to the client's mobility and query pattern. To solve these drawbacks, we propose a semantic prefetching (SP) scheme using prefetching segment concept and improved cache replacement policies. When a mobile client enters a new service area, called semantic prefetching area, proposed scheme fetches the necessary semantic information from the server in advance. The mobile client maintains the information in its own cache for query processing of location-dependent data (LDD) in mobile computing environment. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in relation to various environmental variables, such as the mobility and query pattern of user, the distributions of LDDs and applied cache replacement strategies. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is more efficient than the well-known existing scheme for range query and nearest neighbor query. In addition, applying the two queries dynamically to query processing improves the performance of the proposed scheme.
W3C has selected OWL as a standard for Web ontology description and a necessity of research on storage models that can store OWL ontologies effectively has been issued. Until now, relational model-based storage systems such as Jena, Sesame, and DLDB, have been developed, but there still remain several issues. Especially, they lead inefficient query processing performance. The structural problems of their low query processing performance are as follow: Jena has a simple structure which is not normalized and also stores most information in a single table. It exponentially decreases the performance because of comparison with unnecessary information for processing queries requiring join operations as well as simple search. The structures of storages(e.g., Sesame) have been completely normalized. Therefore it executes many join operations for query processing. The storages require many join operations to find simply a specific class. This paper proposes a storage model to resolve the problems that the query processing performance is decreased because of non-normalization or complete normalization of the existing storages. To achieve this goal, we analyze the problems of existing storage models as well as relations of OWL elements and query patterns. The proposed model, defined with the analysis results, provides an optimal normalized structure to minimize join operations or unnecessary information comparison. For the experiment of query processing performance, a LUBM data sets are used and query patterns are defined considering search targets and their hierarchical relations. In addition, this paper conducts experiments on correctness and completeness of query results to verify data loss of the proposed model, and the results are described. With the comparative evaluation results, our proposal showed a better performance than the existing storage models.
With the growing popularity of smart devices, various location based services have been providing to users. Recently, some location based social applications that combine social services and location based services have been emerged. The demands of a k-nearest neighbors(k-NN) query which finds k closest locations from a user location are increased in the location based social network services. In this paper, we propose an approximate k-NN query processing method for fast response time in a large number of users environments. The proposed method performs efficient stream processing using big data distributed processing technologies. In this paper, we also propose a modified grid index method for indexing a large amount of location data. The proposed query processing method first retrieves the related cells by considering a user movement. By doing so, it can make an approximate k results set. In order to show the superiority of the proposed method, we conduct various performance evaluations with the existing method.
Abstract In distributed environment(e.g., WWW), it would be possible for the users to submit SQL-like spatial queries and to see their query results from the server on the Web browser. However, of many obstacles which result from browsing query results including large spatial data such as raster image, the delay of user response time is very critical. In this paper we present a new prefetch policy which can alleviate user response time on the assumption that user's callback access pattern has spatial locality. Our prefetch policy can be summerized as follows: 1) our prefetch algorithm is based on the Hibert-curve model which well replects user's access pattern, and 2) it utilizes user's callback interval to reduce prefetch network transmission cost. In this paper we conducted diverse experiments to show that our prefetch policy achieves higher performance improvement compared to other non-prefetch methods.

Recently, with highly Interest In Location-Based Service(LBS) utilizing location data of moving objects, the GALIS(Gracefully Aging Location Information System) which is a cluster-based distributed computing architecture was proposed as a more efficient location management system of moving objects. In the SLDS(Short-term location Data Subsystem) which Is a subsystem of the GALIS, since the SDP(Short-term Data Processor) Master transmits current location data and queries to every SDP Worker, the SDP Master reassembles and sends query results produced by SDP Workers to the client. However, the services are suspended during the SDP Master under failure and the response time to the client is increased if the load is concentrated on the SDP Master. Therefore, in this paper, the extended SLDS was designed and implemented to solve these problems. Though one SDP Master is under failure, the other can provide the services continually, and so the extended SLDS can guarantee the high reliability of the SLDS. The extended SLDS also can reduce the response time to the client by enabling two SDP Masters to perform the distributed query processing. Finally, we proved high reliability and high availability of the extended SLDS by implementing the current location data storage, query processing, and failure takeover scenarios. We also verified that the extended SLDS is more efficient than the original SLDS through the query processing performance evaluation.

The procedure of the arbitration which is the tag collision is essential because the multiple tags response simultaneously in the same frequency to the request of the Reader. This procedure is known as Anti-collision and it is a key technology in the RFID system. In this paper, we propose the Bit Pattern Prediction Algorithm(BPPA) for the efficient identification of the multiple tags. The BPPA is based on the tree algorithm using the time slot and identify the tag quickly and efficiently using accurate bit pattern prediction method. Through mathematical performance analysis, We proved that the BPPA is an O(n) algorithm by analyzing the worst-case time complexity and the BPPA's performance is improved compared to existing algorithms. Through MATLAB simulation experiments, we verified that the BPPA require the average 1.2 times query per one tag identification and the BPPA ensure stable performance regardless of the number of the tags.
Today, most of all the query processors in the world generally use the 'Pipelining' method to acquire fast response time (first record latency) and less memory usage. Each of the operator nodes in the Query Execution Plan (QEP) provides Open(), Next(), and Close() functions for their interface to facilitate the iterator mechanism. However, the embedded database systems for the mobile devices, based on the FLASH memory, usually require a function like Previous(), which returns the previous records from current position. It is because that, in the embedded environment, the mobile devices cannot fully provide it main memory to store all the query results. So, whenever needed the previously read records the user (program) should re-fetch the previous records using the Previous() function: the BACKWARD data fetch. In this paper, I introduce the 'Direction Switching Problem' caused by the Previous() function and suggest 'Block-wise Skipping' method to fully utilize the benefits of the block-based data transfer mechanism, which is widely accepted by most of the today's relational database management systems.
A query processing is a critical issue in data warehouse environment since queries on data warehouses often involve hundreds of complex operations over large volumes of data. Data warehouses therefore build a large number of materialized views to increase the system performance. Which views to materialized is an important factor on the view maintenance cost as well as the query performance. The goal of materialized view selection problem is to select an optimal set of views that minimizes total query response time in addition to the view maintenance cost. In this paper, we present an efficient solution for the materialized view selection problem. Although the optimal selection of materialized views is NP-hard problem, we developed a feasible solution by utilizing the characteristics of relational operators such as join, selection, and grouping.
A sensor network consists of a network of sensors that can perform computation and also communicate with each other through wireless communication. Some important characteristics of sensor networks are that the network should be self administered and the power efficiency should be greatly considered due to the fact that it uses battery power. In sensor networks, when large amounts of various stream data is produced and multiple queries need to be processed simultaneously, the power efficiency should be maximized. This work proposes a technique to create an index on multiple monitoring queries so that the multi-query processing performance could be increased and the memory and power could be efficiently used. The proposed SMILE tree modifies and combines the ideas of spatial indexing techniques such as k-d trees and R+-trees. The k-d tree can divide the dimensions at each level, while the R+-tree improves the R-tree by dividing the space into a hierarchical manner and reduces the overlapping areas. By applying the SMILE tree on multiple queries and using it on stream data in sensor networks, the response time for finding an indexed query takes in some cases 50% of the time taken for a linear search to find the query.
