  • Multiple-count problem is occurred when rectangle objects span across several buckets. The Cumulative Density (CD) histogram is a technique which solves multiple-count problem by keeping four sub-histograms corresponding to the four points of rectangle. Although it provides exact results with constant response time, there is still a considerable issue. Since it is based on a query window which aligns with a given grid, a number of errors may be occurred when it is applied to real applications. In this paper, we proposed selectivity estimation techniques using the generalized cumulative density histogram based on two probabilistic models: (1) probabilistic model which considers the query window area ratio, (2) probabilistic model which considers intersection area between a given grid and objects. In order to evaluate the proposed methods, we experimented with real dataset and experimental results showed that the proposed technique was superior to the existing selectivity estimation techniques. The proposed techniques can be used to accurately quantify the selectivity of the spatial range query on rectangle objects.

  • In the new database applications such as office information systems, CAD/CAM, and AI, it is required to support not only fixed Is-A and Part-Of relationships but also various user-defined dynamic relationships including complicate constraints. However, existing object-oriented systems have many weaknesses in managing those complex relationships. This paper presents the Object-Oriented Relationship data Model (OORM) which is designed to provide facilities for modeling complex relationships into object oriented databases using abstraction concept. In the model, various integrity and consistency constraints related to the relationships can be also represented. And this paper presents a query language, ORSQL(Object Relationship SQL). ORSQL is a nonprocedural query language having similiar syntax to the standard SQL and supporting OORM's operations.

  • Techniques for processing continuous queries are required to developing the various types of application services (monitoring services) in ubiquitous environment where the real-time data acquisition from a lot of sensors, analysis, and processing are required. In the previous works of the continuous queries, they have represented all of the continuous queries as the interval queries or region queries, and proposed some methods for processing theses queries. The types of continuous queries, however, are very various, and could be presented by combining the attribute conditions, spatial conditions, and temporal conditions. In this paper, I have classify the types of continuous queries, and have proposed the continuous query model which could be presented by combining those conditions. The contributions of this paper include that it proposes the query model representing the continuous queries and suggests future research directions.

  • In decision support system, knowledge workers require aggregation operations of the large data and are more interested in the trend analysis rather than in the punctual analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to provide fast approximate answers rather than exact answers, and to research approximate query answering techniques. In this paper, we propose a new approximation query answering method which is based on Fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) method and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). The proposed method using FCM-ANFIS can compute aggregate queries without accessing massive multidimensional data cube by producing the KR model of multidimensional data cube. In our experiments, we show that our method using the KR model outperforms the NMF method.

  • With the advent of XML and database languages armed with the object-oriented concept and deductive logic, the problem of efficient query processing for them has become a major issue. We describe a way of processing semi-structured XML data through an implementation of a Deductive and Object-oriented Database (DOODB) language with the explanation of query processing. We have shown how to convert an XML data model to a DOODB data model. We have then presented an efficient query processing method based on Connection Graph Resolution. We also present a knowledge-based query processing method that uses the homomorphism of objects in the database and the associative rule of substitutions.

  • Digital contents services are one of the topics that have been intensively studied in the media industry, where various semantic and ontology techniques are applied. However, query execution for ontology data is still inefficient, lack of sufficient extensible definitions for node relationships, and there is no specific semantic method fit for media data representation. In order to make the machine understand digital contents (DCs) data well, we analyze DCs data, including static data and dynamic data, and use ontology to specify and classify objects and the events of the particular objects. Then the formal representation method is proposed which not only redefines DCs data based on the technology of OWL/RDF, but is also combined with media segmentation methods. At the same time, to speed up the access mechanism of DCs data stored under the persistent database, an ontology-based DCs query solution is proposed, which uses the specified distance vector associated to a surveillance of semantic label (annotation) to detect and track a moving or static object.

  • Despite limited success, today's information retrieval (IR) systems are not intelligent or reliable. IR systems return poor search results when users formulate their information needs into incomplete or ambiguous queries (i.e., weak queries). Therefore, one of the main challenges in modern IR research is to provide consistent results across all queries by improving the performance on weak queries. However, existing IR approaches such as query expansion are not overly effective because they make little effort to analyze and exploit the meanings of the queries. Furthermore, word sense disambiguation approaches, which rely on textual context, are ineffective against weak queries that are typically short. Motivated by the demand for a robust IR system that can consistently provide highly accurate results, the proposed study implemented a novel topic detection that leveraged both the language model and structural knowledge of Wikipedia and systematically evaluated the effect of query disambiguation and topic-based retrieval approaches on TREC collections. The results not only confirm the effectiveness of the proposed topic detection and topic-based retrieval approaches but also demonstrate that query disambiguation does not improve IR as expected.

  • This paper analyzes cost tradeoffs between memory usage and computation for window-based operators in data stream environments. It identifies generic operator network constructs, and sets up a cost model for the estimation of the expected memory reduction and the computation overheads when window memory relocations are applied to each operator network construct. This cost model helps to identify the utility of window memory relocations. It also helps to apply window memory relocation to improve a query execution plan to save memory usage. The proposed approach contributes to expand the scope of query processing and optimization in data stream environments. It also provides a basis to develop a cost estimation model for the query optimization using window memory relocations.

  • A triple database consisting of a number of three-column tables require high cost of query processing, whereby building a shortcut is known as an effective way to reduce the cost. It is important to figure out what shortcuts needs to be selectively built. Most shortcut selection algorithms make use of a benefit model that considers the query frequency. However they work poor to reflect the database update. In this paper, we consider a benefit model for triple databases. The model considers not only the profit of query response times but also the building and maintenance costs of the shortcuts. We apply the model to design a benefit function which can be plugged in a greedy-based shortcut selection algorithm. We perform the empirical experiments on a real-world dataset and analyze the effect of each factor employed in the benefit function.

  • A biological data acquisition based on web has emerged as a powerful tool for allowing scientists to interactively view entries form different databases, and to navigate from one database to another molecular-biology database links. In this paper, the biological conceptual model is constructed hybrid biological data model to represent interesting entities in the data sources to applying navigation rule property for each biological data source based on four biological data integrating layers to control biological data. When some user's requests for application service are occurred, we can get the data from database and data source via web service. In this paper, we propose a query processing model and execution structure based on integrating data layers that can search information on biological data sources.
