Forest vegetation in Mt. Jangan County Park, Jeonlabuk-Do, Korea, was investigated by classification and ordination methods. By the cluster analysis (classification) method, nine groups were recognized as follows : Quercus serrata community, Quercus serrata- Carpinus laxiflora community, Cornus controversa community, Fraxinus mandshurica community, Carpinus laxiflora community, Quereus variabilis community, Quercus mongolica - Sasa borealis community. Quercus mongolica - Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa community and Quercus mongolica - Rhododendron schlippenbachii community. These groups showed differences in species composition and environmental characteristics, but Quercus mongolica - Sasa borealis community, Quercus mongolica - Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa community and Quercus mongolica - Rhododendron schlippenbachii community among them showed very similar floristic composition to each other. The interrelationship between the floristic composition of the vegetation and environmental factors was analysed by principal component analysis (PCA). Quercus mongolica community was distributed at a high altitude (900~1200 m above sea level). Fraxinus mandshurica community and Cornus controversa community were differentiated from the other communities with high contents of soil moisture and pH. On the other hand, Carpinus laxiflora community and Quercus variabilis community were distributed at places with adequate levels of soil moisture, soil organic matter. and at low altitude. In this study, the altitude and soil moisture were the main factors determining the forest vegetation. They were strongly correlated with the dominant compositional gradient at the localities examined.
A study of forest vegetation in Mt. $T\v{o}kyu$ National Park was investigated by ordination technique. By TWINSPAN(Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis) method, 10 groups were recognized as follows: pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Quercus mongolica-Abies koreana, Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudo-sieboldi-amum, Quercus mongolica-Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa, Carpinus laxiflora, Fraxinus mandshurica and Taxus cuspidata groups. The floristic composition of these groups showed high correlation to soil moisture(r=0.831), altitude(r=0.784), topography(r=-0.722), organic matter(r=0.642), and pH(r=-0.509) among various environmental factors. According to the results of CCA(Canonical Correspondence Analysis) Pinus densiflora group and Quercus variabilis group were situated in a xeric area at a lower altitude where soil nutrients were poor compared with the other groups. Fraxinus mandshurica group was distributed throughout the valley with high soil moisture and good nutrients, Quercus serrata group and Carpinus laxiflora group were found in the low altitude region with good nutrients, Quercus mongolica group, at the high altitude region with good nutrients, and Quercus mongolica-Acer koreana and Taxus cuspidata at higher altitudes(1, 400-1600 m).
The continuum analyses and polar ordinations were applied for the ordination of forest vegetation in Mt. Naejang, national park in Korea. In the continuum analyses the sequence of Pinus densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis, Carpinus laxiflora, Carpinus tschonoskii, Lindera erythrocapa and Zelkova serrata community was arranged along the continuum gradient as in moisture gradient analyses. The positive correlation of r=0.83 between continuum index and soil moisture content was observed. In the polar ordinations ten communities of Pinus densiflora, Quercus monogolica, Quercus variabilis, Carpinus laxiflora, Daphniphyllum macropodum, carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus aliena-Carpinus tschonoskii, Torreya nucifera, Cornus controversa-Lindera erythrocarpa and Zelkova serrata were identified. However, continuous distribution pattern of ten communities mentioned above could be regarded as a vegetational continuum. The results of these ordinations also were corresponded to those of phytosociological classification.
A research was made through a experimental cultivation during a period of 7 years (1956~1962) to determine the yearly yield, the total gross yield over 7 year's period and the maximum availability of stock timbers used as the germination bed of cortinellus edodes (Berk) Ido et Imai. The results are summarized as follows : (1) Research and plot scheme: Two experimental plots were established-plot "A" in the experimental forest of this college; plot "B" in the campus woods, 400 timber beds were furnished in each. The kinds of timbers used are : Quercus Serrata Thumb 140. Quercus acutissima Carr. 140, Quercus crispula BI 120. The environmental condition in plot "A" was better then that in plot "B" and the former showed greater yield than the latter. (2) yield : In plot "A" the total yield was 58.875kg and some of the timbers was still continuing germ in this seven after closing of the plot. In plot "B" the total yield was 56.90kg and after the sixth year no more germination was observed. In conclusion, plot "A" showed greater yield and longer germination than plot "B". (3) Germination efficacy and the kinds of timber: The best result was abserved on Quercus serrata, thumb Quercur acutissima Carr, stood next and then came Quercus crispula BI. Betula platyphylla was tried, but the result was worst. (4) Availability limits of timber beds: Quercus serrata Thumb with diameter 12~15cm had the longest availability more than (6~7 years) and Quercus acutissima Carr with diameter 12~15cm showed 6~7 year's availability. The shortest availability was found in Quercus crispula with diameter 6~9cm. Any kinds of timber with diameter 6~9cm had only 4~5 years of availability (5) In the table showing the yearly germination quantity, the figure of December and Jaunary of the 4th and 5th year shows the yield obtained in the semi-cellar paper house. This tells that there is good promise of winter cultivation of cortinellus edodes (Berk) Ido et Imai on matured timber beds.
We identified Jolcham oak (Quercus serrata Thunb. ex Murray) (Fagales: Fagaceae) as a new host tree for Callipogon relictus Semenov (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), a Korean natural monument and an endangered species, in Gwangneung Forest, South Korea. We herein report the morphometric characteristics of C. relictus larvae found in a Q. serrata tree and provide a revised list of C. relictus hosts.
To investigate the vegetation structure of the region from Dongchanggyo to Deogjusa in Woraksan National Park, 23 plots$(400m^2)$ set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups Quercus mongolica-pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus molica community, Mixed Broad-leaved community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica, pinus densiflora, Quercus serrata and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai were found as a major woody plant species in Woraksan National Park region. In this area, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora were dominated partially. In the future, the importance percentage of Pinus densiflora might be decreased, but those of Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai might be increased. High positive correlations were proved between Acer pic tum and Corylus heterophylla, Betula schimidtii; Acer pseudosieboldianum, Cornus controversa ; Stephanandra incisa and Symplocos sawafutagi, Lespedeza maximowixzii ; Symplocos sawafutagi and Fraxinus rhynchophyllai, Lespedeza maximowixzii; Fraxinus rhynchophyllai and Acer pseudosieboldianum, Lespedeza maximowixzii; Quercus variabilis and Fraxinus sieboldiana; Corylus heterophylla, and Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Acer pseudo sieboldianum and Lespedeza maximowixzii, and relatively high negative corrlations was proved between Quercus serrata and Betula schimidtii; Quercus mongolica and Quercus serrata; Corylus heterophylla and Lindera erythrocarpa. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups were ranged from $1.2393\~1.3674$ and it was relatively high compared to those of the ridge area of other national parks.
One of the restriction of wood as building material is its combustibility. The purpose of this paper is to examine the combustion properties of the quercus variabilis and zelkova serrata which are dried at room temperature and meet the desirable characteristics for use of construction materials. The cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) was used to determine the heat release rate (HRR) and fire smoke index, as well as CO production and smoke obscuration. The $HRR_{mean}$ 77.94 kW/$m^2$ of the quercus variabilis at 50 kW/$m^2$ was high in comparison with $HRR_{mean}$ 13.06 kW/$m^2$ for the zelkova serrata. Furthermore, the quercus variabilis has high specific extinction area ($SEA_{mean}$), 41.11 $m^2$/kg compared with $SEA_{mean}$ 9.23 $m^2$/kg of zelkova serrata. Thease results are depend on the density of tested wood species. In addition, the quercus variabilis has high CO production rate compared with that of zelkova serrata. Also, zelkova serrata showed an increase of retardant properties attributed to char formation compared with that of quercus variabilis.
Leaves of various, 3 to 5-year-old Quercus hybrids were intermediate in size between their parental species. The petiole length was the smallest in the hybrids of Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. crispula $F_1$ and was intermediate in the hybrids of Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. serrata $F_1$ and Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. aliena $F_1$ between their parents. The number of serration in hybrids was close to their mother tree's in most of crossing combinations. The serration depth and the ratio between longitudinal and transverse length of leaves were intermediate between the values of their parental species.
To investigate the actual vegetation in Sokri mountain area, which consists of Sokri Mt. National Park, forest communities were classified by phytosocialogical analysis according to species composition and physiognomy. Actual vegetation map was drawn on the basis of classified forest communities. The forest communities in Mt. Sokri were classified as follows : 1. Pinus densiflora community 1) P. densiflora-Rhododedron mucronulatum subcommunity 2) P. densiflora-Rhododendron schippenbachii subcomminity 3) P. densiflora-Lespedeza maximowiczii subcommunity 4) P. densiflora-Sasa borealis subcommunity 2. P. densiflora-Quercus serrata community 3. P. densiflora-Q. variabilis community 4. Quercus serrata community 5. Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community 6. Carpinus laxiflora community 7. Quercus mongolica community 1) Typical subcommunity 2) Q. mongolica-Lespedeza maximowiczii subcommunity 3) Q. mongolica-Rhododendron schlippenbachii subcommunity 8. Fraxinus rhynchophylla community 9. Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa community 10. Quercus variabilis community
The evergreen broad-leaved forest in Mt. Turyunsan was classified into four plant communities : Carpinus tschonoskii community, Carpinus tschonoskii - Quercus acute community, Quercus acuta community, Neolitisea sericea community. Quercus acuta, which had been appeared as a dominant species in most evergreen broad-leaved forest, was assumed to be succeed from Quercus serrata and Quercus variabilis through Carpinus tschonoskii, and would be succeed to Neolitsea serisea. Carpinus thschonoskii and Quercu serrata were assumed to be competitive with Quercus acuta, Camellia japonica, Neolitsea serisea and, Machilus thunbergii. It was assumed that Quercus acuta had a similiar ecological niche with Camellia japonica. Also it was assumed Neolitsea serisea had a similiar ecological niche with Lozoste lansifolia.
