  • In order to elucidate the relationship among the several forest types in the green-sbelt nearby Seoul, the vascular plant species data collected preferentially from 52 stands were subjected to DCA (detrended correspondence analysis). Eight types of forests were arranged on the I/II plane fo DCA stand ordination, Quercus mongolica, Alnus hirsuta, Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and pinus rigida forest. Correlation analysis between the stand scores of DCA and environmental factors revealed that the axis I of DCA stand ordination implied the gradient of altitude, organic matter, total nitrogen and depth of A horizon. The axis II implied the gradient of total nitrogen and soluble phosphorus. The results of PCA (principal components analysis) by environmental data were in good agreement with that of DCA by floristic data. The recruitments of Quercus spp. Occurred in all kinds of forest types in the green-belt and their recruitments were closely related with altitutde: Quercus dentata in the foot. Quercus serrata in the midslope and Quercus mongolica in the uperslope of the mountain.

  • Based upon the vegetation data of woody plants by plot sampling method in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Jeombong, the study was carried out to examine importance value, rank abundance curve, and species abundance curve, and comparatively evaluate seven different species diversity indices for Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index, McIntosh index, Log series, Margalef index, Berger-Parker index, and species richness, according to topographic positions. The minimal area which meant only few more species were increased was 3.48 ha in total. The dominant species of valley were Carpinus cordata, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, and Abies holophylla, and the dominant species of mid-slope were Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Carpinus cordata, Tilia amurensis, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla. Moreover, the dominant species of ridge were Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Tilia amurensis, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, and Acer mono. According to rank abundance curve and species abundance curve, species evenness was also low. All of Log series, species richness, Margalef, and Shannon-Wiener index discriminated that valley had the highest diversity, and ridge had the lowest diversity; but, Simpson index, McIntosh index, and Berger-Parker index represented that mid-slope had the highest diversity, and ridge had the lowest diversity. Uniquely, in Berger-Parker index, mid-slope was the higher value than total.

  • In this study, Quercus acutissima seedlings were subjected to drought for 30 days then analyzed to determine their response to water deficit. The growth phenotype, chlorophyll fluorescence response, fresh weight, dry weight, photosynthetic pigment levels, soluble sugar content, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured to evaluate the effects of drought on plant growth and physiology. The growth phenotype was observed by infrared (IR) digital thermal imaging after 30 days of drought treatment. The maximum, average, and minimum temperatures of drought-treated plant leaves were $1-2^{\circ}C$ higher than those of the control. In contrast, the fresh and dry weights of the dehydrated leaves were generally lower than those of the control. There were no significant differences between treatments in terms of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid levels. Nevertheless, for the drought treatment, the $F_v/F_m$ and $F_v/F_o$ ratios (chlorophyll fluorescence response) were lower than those for the control. Therefore, photosynthetic activity was lower in the dehydrated plants than the control. The drought-stressed Q. acutissima S0536 had lower soluble sugar (glucose and fructose) and higher MDA levels than the controls. These findings may explain the early growth and physiological responses of Q. acutissima to dehydration and facilitate the selection of drought-resistant tree families.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the applicability of LANDIS-II model to Korea. The case study was carried out in Daecheong Dam basin. In order to operate the model, a total of 63,107 cells of 100x100m unit were constructed, each cell consists of ecoregion map, initial communities map, plant physiological data, and climate change prediction data using SSP2-4.5 scenario. Forest distributions of year 2050 and 2100 were predicted by distribution intensity and interference among trees based on field surveys of 147 points in 2020. As a result, trees of decreased distribution area in the future are in the order of Quercus mongolica, Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora and Robinia pseudoacacia, which characterized vulnerable to the effects of climate change or artificially planted trees. While warm climate trees of Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Quercus acutissima and Quercus aliana are predicted to increase their distribution area in the order. These results analyzed using the LANDIS-II model are consistent with the studies on potential natural vegetation and succession tendency in Korea. In conclusion, the applicability of LANDIS-II model in Korea is highly effective and it is also expected to serve as a scientific basis for determining forest policies on afforestation and restoration.

  • Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.

  • The vegetation pattern of Mt. Odae based on the soil humidity gradient showed 3 types: (1) the forest of Pinus densiflora under the mesic or xeric conditions of the low altitudinal area, (2) the forest of Acer including A. mono, A. pseudo-sieboldianum and Tilia amurensis under the submesic or subxeric conditions and (3) the forest of Quercus including Q. mongolica of the higher elevational area and Q. variabilis of the lower elevational area under the xeric condition. Water content, organic matter and total nitrogen of soil were relatively low in Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis communities while they were relatively high in Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Quercus mongolica communities. According to the result of cluster analysis based on similarity indices of the communities, the proposed successional sere in the forest vegetation of Mt. Odae was as follows. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflore + Q. mongolica community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community. P. densiflora community $\longrightarrow$ P. densiflora + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + Q. variabilis community $\longrightarrow$ Q. mongolica + A. pseudo-sieboldianum community.
