  • Partial quenching structure of diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer has been investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in oder to develope a prediction model for the phenomenon of turbulent flame lift off. The present study is specifically aimed to remedy the shortcoming of the stiff transition of the conditioned partial burning probability across the crossover condition by employing the level-set method which enables us to include the effect of finite flame edge propagation speed. In light of the level-set simulation results with two models for the edge propagation speed, the stabilizing conditions for turbulent lifted flame are suggested. The flame hole dynamics combined with the level-set method yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its partial quenching characteristics is compared with the results of the previous model employing the flame-hole random walk mapping based on three critical scalar dissipation rates. The probability to encounter reacting state, conditioned with scalar dissipation rate, demonstrated that the conditional probability has a rather gradual transition across the crossover scalar dissipation rate. Such a smooth transition is attributed to the finite response of the flame edge propagation.

  • Dicalcium silicate has many polymorphs according to temperature. $\beta$-dicalcium silicate which exists in cement is stabilized by minor components drived from raw materials regardless of temperature, such as high temperature and room temperature. K2O, SO3 and B2O3 are effective stabilizers for $\beta$-dicalcium silicate at room temperature. B2O3 was the most effective stabilizer. Transformation from $\beta$ to ${\gamma}$ phase causes dicalcium silicate to change volume, resulting in dusting phenomenon. When B2O3 was used the phase transformation is the least than any other stabilizers. In addition, the starting temperature of quenching influences phases transformation : low temperature of quenching presented much phase transformation and decreased size of parameter of $\beta$-dicalcium silicate.

  • An acoustic emission(AE) technique has been used to monitor and diagnose quenching phenomenon in racetrack shaped superconducting magnets at cryogenic environment of 4.2K. The ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and reliability of large superconducting magnet systems by being able to identity and locate the sources of quench in superconducting magnets. The characteristics of AE parameters have been analyzed by correlating with quench number, winding tension of superconducting coil and charge rate by transport current. It was found in this study stat there was good correlation between quench current and AE parameters. The source location of quenching in superconducting magnet was also discussed on the correlation between magnet voltage and AE energy.

  • The relation between crystallinity and thermal history in low density polyethylene thin films and their effect on electric conduction phenomena and dielectric breakdown was studied. The low density polythylene thin films obtained by the solution growth method heat-treated at 140[$^{\circ}C$] for 2 h and subsequently cooling to various ways. The degree of crystallinity was estimated by the X-ray diffraction measurement for the specimen of slowly cooling, ICE quenching and liquid nitrogen quenching. The result shows that the crystallinity decreases become faster as the cooling speed increased, and that conduction phenomenon is governed by the space charge limited current in high field. It was found that the dielectric breakdown field increases with an increase in cooling speed and test number in self-healing breakdown method.

  • In the present study, Bauschinger effect was investigated for the micro-alloying forging steel which has been developed for about 30 years ago to save energy consumption by eliminating the heat treatment processes in the forging industry. The micro-alloying steels used fur cold forging industry mainly aim to replace the usual carbon steel. With the conventional carbon steels, all the deformation history can be eliminated after the final heat treatment(quenching and tempering). In the case of micro-alloying forging steels, however, the prior deformation history should be taken into consideration to meet the mechanical property requirement since the microstructure of micro-alloying steels might exhibit the Bauschinger effect, which was not needed to consider in the case of conventional carbon steel having quenching and tempering treatment. In the present study, the reverse loading tests were carried out to determine the Bauschinger effect of micro-alloying steel which composed of ferrite and cementite phases.

  • In this study, divalent europium-activated $NaCaPO_4$ green phosphor powders were prepared by the chemical synthetic method followed by heat treatment in reduced atmosphere, and the crystal structures, morphologies and photoluminescent properties of the powders were investigated by x-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope and spectrometer for the first time. The effects of Ca/P and Na/Ca mole ratios on the final products were also investigated. The influences of input amount change of europium as the activator on the light emission intensity were studied, and the resulting concentration quenching phenomenon was observed. The optimized synthesis conditions obtained in this study were Ca/P mole ratio 1.2, Na/Ca mole ratio 3.0 and 4 mole%Eu. The peak wavelength was 505 nm for all the samples. The result of excitation spectrum measurement indicated that the excitation efficiency was high for the long-wavelength UV region. It was thus concluded that the samples prepared in this study can be successfully applied for the light-emitting devices such as LED excited with long-wavelength UV light sources.

  • Selective quenching of 1, 6-diphenyl-1, 3, 5-hexatriene (DPH) by trinitrophenyl groups was utilized to examine the transbilayer fluidity asymmetry of model membranes of phospholipids (SPMVPL) extracted from synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMV). The polarization (P), anisotropy (r), limiting anisotropy $(r_\infty$), and order parameter (S) of DPH in the inner monolayer were 0.019, 0.014, 0.018, and 0.047, respectively, greater than calculated for the outer monolayer of SPMVPL. Selective quenching of DPH by trinitrophenyl groups was also utilized to examine the effects of n-alkanols on the individual monolayer structure of SPMVPL. n-Alkanols fluidized the hydrocarbon region of bulk SPMVPL and the potencies of n-alkanols up to 1-nonanon increased with carbon chain length. It appears that the potencies in bilayer fluidization increase by 1 order of magnitude as the carbon chain length increases by two carbon atoms. The cut-off phenomenon was reached at 1-decanol, where further increase in hydrocarbon length resulted in a decrease in pharmacological activity. The n-alkanols had greater fluidizing effects on the outer monolayer as compared to the inner monolayer of SPMVPL, even though these selective effects tended to become weaker as the carbon chain length increased. Thus, it has been proven that n-alkanols exhibit selective rather than nonselective fludizing effects within transbilayer domains of SPMVPL.

  • Self-blast circuit breakers utilize the energy dissipated by the arc itself to create the required conditions for arc quenching during the current zero. The high-current simulation provides information about the mixing process of the hot PTFE cloud with $SF_6$ gas which is difficult to access for measurement. But it is also hard to simulate flow phenomenon because the flow in interrupter with high current, $SF_6$-PTFE mixture vapor and complex physical behavior including radiation, calculation of electric field. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) package, the conservation equation for the gas and temperature, velocity and electric fields within breaker can be solved. Results show good agreement between the predicted and measured pressure rise in the thermal chamber.

  • Thermal shock is a physical phenomenon that occurs in the condition of the exposure of a rapidly large temperature and pressure change of in the quenching condition of material. The rocket nozzle is exposed to high temperature combustion gas, it may have failure and erosion deformation. So, it is important to select a suitable material having excellent thermal shock properties and evaluate these materials in rocket design. In this study, the temperature gradient and crack initiation of rocket nozzle material is investigated using by FEM under thermal shock condition. This is very important information in the design process of thermal structure.

  • LOFT LBLOCA test, LP-02-6 was analyzed using RELAP5/MOD3.2. It has a distinguished thermal-hydraulic phenomenon of a positive bottom-up core flow in tile blowdown phase. A modified nodalization which is based on that used in LP-LB-1 calculation by Lubbesmeyer was used in the calculation. RELAP5/MOD3.2 predicted overall system hydraulic behavior relatively well. However, the bottom-up quenching in the middle part of the core was not predicted sufficiently. It was demonstrated also that the peak cladding temperature can be predicted well by adjusting a discharge coefficient. But more improvements are needed in order to apply this code to actual plants with less user dependency.
