  • By means of constant- pressure molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the liquid- glass- crystalline transition of a system composed of Lennard- Jones particles with periodic boundary conditions. Atomic volume and enthalpy were calculated as functions of temperature during heating and cooling processes. The Wendt- Abraham ratio derived from radial distribution function and the angular distribution function characterizing short range order were analyzed to distinguish between liquid, glass and crystalline states. A liquid phase resulting from a slow heating of an initial fee crystal amorphized on fast quench, but it crystallized on slow quench. When slowly heated, the amorphous phase from fast quench crystallized into an fee structure. A system with free surface was shown to melt from the surface inward at a lower temperature than bulk system and to have a strong tendency for crystallization even during a fast quench from a liquid state.

  • Here we present the comparative experimental study of the stability of the superconducting state in 4 mm YBCO tapes with copper lamination against local heat disturbances at 77 K. The samples are either directly cooled by immersing a bare YBCO tape into a liquid nitrogen pool or operate in nearly-adiabatic conditions when the tape is covered by a 0.6 mm layer of Kapton insulation. Main quench characteristics, i.e. minimum quench energies (MQEs) and normal zone propagation (NZP) velocities for both samples are measured and compared. Minimum NZP currents are determined by a low ohmic resistor technique eligible for obtaining V - I curves with a negative differential resistance. The region of transport currents satisfying the stationary stability criterion is found for the different cooling conditions. Finally, we use the critical temperature margin as a universal scaling parameter to compare the MQEs obtained in this work for YBCO tapes at 77 K with those taken from literature for low-temperature superconductors in vacuum at 4.2 K, as well as for MgB2 wires cooled with a cryocooler down to 20 K.

  • This paper suggests an improved technique to establish the modeling regarding steady and transient state on three phase-in one cryostat type HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable. The proposed modeling is established using EMTP/ATPDraw and TACS and MODELS provided by that. It has higher accuracy than the conventional method, as the actual HTS cable is modelled. Steady and transient state analysis performed by EMTP/ATPDraw calculate the current of conductor, shield and former, respectively. In case of the transient state modeled quench state occurred by a single line-to-ground fault, current of conductor shield and former are also calculated, respectively. Especially, various fault resistances and angles are considered to improve the reliability during transient state analysis. Analysis results reveal that the proposed technique improves the accuracy of modeling.

  • An effective modeling and simulation scheme of a resistive type Superconducting fault Current Limiter (SFCL) using PSCAD/EMTDC is proposed in this paper. In case of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) resistive type fault current limiter current limiting is implemented by the ultra-fast transition characteristics from the superconducting (non-resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density. The states can generally be divided into three sub-states: the superconducting state the quench state and the recovery state respectively. In order to provide alternative application schemes of a resistive type SFCL, an effective modeling and simulation method of the SFCL is necessary. For that purpose, in this study, an actual experiment based component model is developed and applied for the simulation of the real resistive type SFCL using PSCAD/EMTDC. The proposed simulation scheme can be implemented to the grid system readily under various system conditions including sort of faults and the system capacity as well. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and simulation scheme.

  • One dimensional conduction equation is solved by finite difference method, to analyse the stability of Au/YBCO film deposited on a sapphire substrate. Jolue heat is included in the case of current sharing state. The analysis shows the quench and recovery of superconductor depending on the amount of thermal disturbance release on the center surface of superconductor. The critical disturbance energies for different filling factor and operating current are calculated.

  • The analysis of temperature distribution and change of metallic structures during water quench were presented by finite element method. In temperature calculation the equation of unsteady state hear conduction problem considering latent heat due to phase transformation was applied to finite solid cylinder, SM 45C of 40mm diameter and 40mm height. In metallic structure analysis iso-thermal transformation curve and the equations of evolution in pearlite-martensite transformation were applied. The calculated results upon temperature and metallic structures were agreed with those of experimental observations.

  • In these days, the interruption capability of some circuit breakers, which are installed in the transmission systems, is getting lower than the magnitude of the fault current because of continuous increase of power demand and relatively short power line which was installed in forms of mesh network As a result of these situations, fault current limiters (FCLs) are strongly necessary. There are various types which is investigated around the world, and new power apparatuses that have been newly considered and developed by many manufactures. In this paper, we considered resistive superconducting fault current limiters with YBCO thin films. The resistive limiters utilize a transition of YBCO films from superconducting to normal state caused by exceeding the critical current. By means of newly occurred impedance, the fault current will be limited effectively. Generally, a few current path patterns are available for YBCO films to enhance the current limiting performance of YBCO films. In this paper. the meander-type and the bi-spiral-type were used for current paths of YBCO flims. When YBCO films are quenched into the normal state, bubbles could be observed on the surface of YBCO films. Using our high-speed camera, the number of bubbles and the size of bubbles could be visualized and the relation between bubbles and current density was analyzed. By means of moving pictures of bubbles, we observed how the quench extended or how the heat was conducted in films.

  • Simple binary $Na_2S-SiO_2$ oxysulfide glasses were prepared by a conventional melt-quench method in order to investigate the role of sulfur in glass structure and the electronic state. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) measurement, S2p binding energy of the glass was observed at approximately 161eV which was close to that of ionic $S^{2-}$. The coordinating state around silicon atoms were investigated by ${29}^Si$ MAS-NMR measurement. The chemical shift observed from NMR supported that sulfur atom was joined to a silicon atom by substituting for an oxygen atom and was present as a non-bridging sulfide ion in low alkali content. On the other hand, it could be presumed that a portion of sulfur anions existed in an isolated state from the glass-network frame at high alkali content. The state of these sulfurs was also studied by Raman spectroscopy in detail.
