Direct Incorporation of Carbon Dioxide to Poly(GMA) Using Quaternary Ammonium Salt Catalysts (4차 암모늄염 촉매를 이용한 Poly(GMA)에의 이산화탄소 직접 고정화)

  • This study is related to the investigation of the direct incorporation of $CO_2$ to polymer using quaternary ammonium salt catalysts. Quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity of $CO_2$ fixation in the synthesis of poly[(1,3-dioxolane-2-oxo-4-yl)methyl methacrylate] [poly(DOMA)] by the direct incorporation of $CO_2$ to poly(glycidyl methacrylate)[poly(GMA)]. Among the salts tested, the ones with higher alkyl chain length and with more nucleophilic counter anion showed higher catalytic activity. The yield of carbon dioxide addition increased with the reaction temperature. Kinetic study was carried out by measuring the variation of $CO_2$, pressure in a high pressure batch reactor. The reaction rate was first order to the concentration of poly(GMA) and $CO_2$, respectively. The rate constant was $0.69L/mol{\cdot}h$ and Henry's constant of $CO_2$ in DMSO at $80^{\circ}C$ was $6.8{\times}10^{-4}mol/L{\cdot}KPa$.

Antibacterial Activity by Chitosan Derivatives with Quaternary Ammonium Salt (4차 암모늄기를 가진 키토산 유도체의 항균성)

  • Chitosan is the deacetylation product of chitin. Chitosan was converted to N-alkyl chitosan derivatives using proper aldehyde having different alkyl chains, then chitosan derivatives with quaternary ammonium salt were producted by quaternization with methyl iodide. Their antibacterial activities aganst S. aureus(ATCC 6538P) and E. coli (ATCC 14339), gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria, respectively, as introduced alkyl length were evaluated by shake flask method using colony count. The antibacteiral activity was found to be increased as alkyl chains. hydrophobic goups. These antibacterial agents were more active against S. aureus than E. coli. It may be due to the different of structure of cytoplasmic membrane.

Synthesis and Characterization of Quaternary Ammonium-based Ionic Liquids Containing an Alkyl Carbonate Group

  • A series of quaternary ammonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) containing an alkyl carbonate group on the cation was first prepared and their physical and electrochemical properties including density, viscosity, thermal stability, electrochemical stability, and ionic conductivity were reported. These ILs exhibited wide electrochemical windows of at least 5.0 V and relatively high conductivities. In contrast to dialkyl-substituted ionic liquids, the ILs with an alkyl carbonate group on the cation showed much smaller drop in conductivities when mixed with a lithium salt, due to the interaction of lithium ions with carbonate groups. Upon interaction with a Li salt, the carbonyl stretching frequency of the carbonate group shifted to a lower frequency whereas the peak associated with C-O single bond moved to a higher frequency.

  • A new type of ionic liquid based on N-(3-aminepropyl)imidazolium iodide, called IIQAI, which consists of imidazolium and quaternary ammonium salt, and APII-(hydroxyethyl, propyl, hexyl) were synthesized and used as ionic liquid in dye-sensitized solar cells. APII-hexyl is solid, whereas IIQAI, APII-(hydroxyethyl, propyl) are viscous liquids. The synthesized ionic liquid showed relative thermal stability compared to the commercial ionic liquid of DMII. Among them, IIQAI was more stable than the other ionic liquid because of the two salt groups. APII-hydroxyethyl, which contains two hydroxyl groups, showed low viscosity with good flow. New types of ionic liquids were examined by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). IIQAI enabled a solar energy conversion efficiency of 6.3%, which is slightly higher than that of the referenced (DMII, 6.2%).

  • Separation of fructose and glucose was performed using emulsion liquid membranes with a mixture of an organoboronic acid and a quaternary ammonium salt as a carrier in a batch reactor. In order to find a carrier and an optimal experimental condition suitable to the sugar separation, extraction of each sugar was carried out independently. The effect of various experimental variables, such as initial concentration of sugar in the feed phase, type of organoboronic acids, and w/o ratio, on the sugar separation was investigated, and the concentrations of sugars in each aqueous phase were analyzed. The ratio of degree of extraction of fructose to that of glucose was very high, but the concentration of fructose in the receiving phase was not too high. Therefore, a stronger stripping agent in the receiving phase was required for development of a practical ELM system suitable to the sugar separation.

  • Ligand variation was carried out on a cobalt(III) complex of Salen-type ligand comprised of 1,2-cyclohexenediamine and salicylaldehyde bearing a methyl substituent on 3-position and -[$CMe(CH_2CH_2CH_2N^+Bu_3)_2$] on 5-position, which is a highly active catalyst for $CO_2$/propylene oxide copolymerization. Replacement of the methyl substituent with bulky isopropyl group resulted in alteration of the binding mode, consequently lowering turnover frequency significantly. Replacement with an ethyl group preserved binding mode and activity. Replacement of the tributylammonium unit with trihexylammonium or trioctylammonium, or replacement of 1,2-cyclohexenediamino unit with -$NC(Me)_2CH_2N$- decreased activity, even though the binding mode was unaltered.

  • A calix[4]pyrrole (1) bearing a quaternary ammonium pendant via its meso phenoxy linker has been synthesized as the bromide salt form. It was revealed by 1H NMR spectroscopic analyses performed in DMSO-d6 that receptor 1 binds F- with high affinity and selectivity over other halide anions. The binding of receptor 1•Br- with F- and Cltakes place by anion metathesis with the anions including F- and Cl-.

  • N-methyl, N-butyl and N,N-dibutyl chitosan derivatives were prepared by Schiff's base formation and hydrogenation in aqueous media. Furthermore quaternization of the chitosan derivatives was performed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone using methyl iodide to obtain water soluble cationic polyelectrolytes. It was confirmed that O-alkylation was occured as well as selective N-alkylation in these reactions. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives with quaternary ammonium iodide showed high flocculation power as the cationic flocculant. When tested on paper mill waste water, they showed high flocculation power, independing of pH range. The flocculation power was increased as the N-alkyl chain length was increased. Among them, N-butyl dimethyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed better flocculation power than chitosan. But, N,N-dibutyl-N-methyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed less flocculation powre than chitosan itself.

Synthesis and Antiwear Properties of Ammonium Dithiocarbamate-based Ionic Liquid (I) (암모니움 디티오카바메이트계 이온성 액체의 합성 및 내마모성능 (I))

  • The friction-reducing properties of lubricants containing ionic liquids based on ammonium dithiocarbamate are studied. The ionic liquids are produced through the following two steps: the synthesis of sodium alkyl dithiocarbamates via the substitution reaction of dialkylamine and carbon disulfide and their subsequent conversion into ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids through an ion-exchange reaction with a quaternary alkyl ammonium halide salt. The structures of the ionic liquids are characterized by NMR spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The isolated yields of the ionic liquids, which are viscous and pale yellow, are approximately 92%. The Brookfield viscosities and pour points of the ionic liquids are determined. Further, their wear resistances are measured through the four-ball wear test and the Schwingung Reibung Ver-schleiss (oscillation, friction, wear) test. The wear scar diameter of the lubricants containing 1 wt of the quaternary alkyl ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids (0.475-0.631 mm) is significantly lower than that of the base oil (0.825 mm), proving that the ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids have good friction-reducing characteristics. However, these friction-reducing characteristics fade significantly after long-term storage, owing to the degradation of the ionic liquids.

  • Inosamine(deoxyaminoinositol) stereomers such as scyllo-inosamine, myo-inosamine-2, epi-inosamine-2 and myo-inesamine-4 have been synthesize from myo-inositol (1,2,3,5/4,6-hexahydroxycyclohexane) And sixteen of quaternary ammonium salt type deoxyaminoinositols such as dimethylalktl-deoxy-scyllo-inosityl-, dimethylalkyl-2deoxy-2myo-inosityl-, dimethylalkyl-2-deoxy-2-epi-inosityl and dimethylal inosityl-, dimethylalkyl-2-deoxy-2-myo-inosityl-, dimethylalkyl-2-deoxy-2-epi-inosityl and dimethylalkyl-4-deoxy-4-myo-imosityl ammonium chlorides with straight chain alkyl group having from eight to fourteen carton atoms have been synthesized from four kinds of the imosamine stereomers. The isolation and detection of dimethylalkyl-deoxy-inosityl ammonium chlorides have been investigated by column chromatography, paper chromatography, infrared absorption spectra and elementary analysis, respectively.
