Copper or ferrous slag as substitutes for fine aggregates in concrete

  • The ever-increasing cost of natural sand and the environmental impacts of extracting manufactured sand (quarry sand) calls for exploring the potential to use alternative materials as fine aggregates in concrete. Copper slag and ferrous slag are industrial by products obtained from the smelting process of copper and iron respectively. A large quantity of copper slag and ferrous slag end up being disposed as waste in landfills and this poses a serious threat to the environment. Copper slag and ferrous slag have similar physical and chemical properties as natural sand and also exhibit pozzolanic activity. This paper studies the technical feasibility of industrial by-products such as copper slag and ferrous slag to replace the fine aggregate in concrete by evaluating the workability, strength and durability characteristics of concrete. The test results indicate that the strength properties are not affected by 40% or 100% replacement of quarry sand with iron slag or copper slag. However, 40% replacement of quarry sand with iron slag or copper slag in concrete is recommended considering the durability aspects of concrete.

대형직접전단시험과 대형삼축시험을 통한 석산골재의 전단거동 특성 비교 (Comparison of Shear Behavior for Quarry Blasted Rocks Based on Large Scale Direct Shear Test and Large Scale Triaxial Test)

  • 국내 석산에서 생산되는 골재를 사용하여 대형삼축시험과 대형직접전단시험을 동시에 수행한 후 전단특성을 비교하였다. 비교를 위하여 시험조건을 가능한 일치시켰으며, 상대밀도를 50%, 70%, 90%의 세 가지로 변화시켜 시험을 수행하였다. 시험결과 응력-변형률 거동은 두 가지 시험에서 동일하게 나타나며, 전단강도는 상대밀도의 크기에 따라 시험방법별로 추세가 달라진다. 즉, 낮은 상대밀도에서는 대형직접전단시험의 내부마찰각이 대형삼축압축시험 결과 값에 비하여 작게 나타나고, 높은 상대밀도에서는 이 현상이 역전됨을 확인하였다.

국내 토석사업장의 토석채취 및 복구특성 분석 (Analysis of Quarrying and Restoration Characteristics on Quarry in Korea)

  • 국내 토석사업장 55개소의 채취 및 복구유형과 특성을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 토석사업장 인근 산림 현황으로는 혼효림, 평균 표고 300 m 이하, 평균경사도 $11{\sim}20^{\circ}$, 산복부가 가장 많이 나타났으며, 화강암을 기반으로한 지역과 산사태위험 1등급이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 토석사업장의 허가기간으로는 6~10년, 허가면적 10 ha 이하, 채취량 100만 이하의 사업장이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 쇄골재용 석재를 채취하는 사업장, 계단식 채석을 시행하는 사업장, 잔벽 경사로는 $61^{\circ}$ 이상인 사업장이 가장 많이 나타났다. 복구시 자력으로 복구한 사업장과 복구유형 중 비탈면 녹화형으로 복구한 사업장이 가장 많이 나타났으며, 복구지의 평탄지와 잔벽, 소단 면적이 각각 54.9:39.6:5.5의 비율로 나타났다. 토석사업장 복구면적과 각 인자와의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 채취량(유의성 1%), 허가면적, 잔벽 폭, 잔벽 높이(유의성 5%)가 정의 상관관계를 나타내었다.

  • 우리나라 골재산업의 현황을 파악하기 위하여 골재채취법 및 산지관리법, 골재공급실적과 2016년도 골재원별 공급계획을 그리고 지역별 골재가격 동향을 조사하였다. 골재산업 중에서도 산림골재의 비중이 매년 신장하고 있으며, 산림골재가 골재산업을 주도하고 있다. 한편, 골재산업의 이해를 돕기 위해 우리나라 산림골재산업의 대표적 기업으로 매년 200 ~ 300만$m^3$의 품질 높은 골재를 수도권에 공급하고 있는 (주)삼표산업 화성사업소(화성석산)의 골재생산 프로세스를 기술하였다.

Fresh and hardened properties of concrete containing cold bonded aggregates

  • The properties of fresh and hardened concrete made using three types of artificial cold bonded aggregates are determined. The properties, namely, slump, water absorption, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete containing artificial aggregate are reported. The variables considered are aggregate type and water-to-cement ratio. Three types of cold bonded aggregates are prepared using fly ash and quarry dust. The water-to-cement ratio of 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.65 is used. The test result indicates that artificial aggregates can be recommended for making the concrete up to a strength grade of 38 MPa. The use of quarry dust in the production of artificial aggregate mitigates environmental concerns on disposal problems of the dust. Hence, the alternate material proposed in this study is a green technology in concrete production.

  • Fusion and characterization of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether based thermosetting polymer mortars containing an epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand are presented here for the Experimental study. The specimens have been prepared by means of an innovative process, in mild conditions, of commercial epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand based paste. In this way, thermosetting based hybrid mortars characterized by a different content of normalized Fly ash and Rock sand by a homogeneous dispersion of the resin have been obtained. Once hardened, these new composite materials show improved compressive strength and toughness in respect to both the Fly ash and the Rock sand pastes since the Resin provides a more cohesive microstructure, with a reduced amount of micro cracks. The micro structural characterization allows pointing out the presence of an Interfacial Transition Zone similar to that observed in cement based mortars. A correlation between micro-structural features and mechanical properties of the mortar has also been studied.

방조제 축조에 따른 지반의 변형에 관한 실험연구 (An experimental study on the Ground deformation caused by sea-dike construction)

  • When a sea-dike is constructed on soft soils, it is much difficult to calculate ground deformation caused by forced displacements. In this study , a series of laboratory model tests have been performed to investigate the ground deformation under a constructed sea-dike on soft soils. Construction sequence of sea-dike embankment was assumed such as constructed by quarry first and followed by soils adjacent to quarry embankment. as test data and displacement in subsoils have been analyzed, it seems that deformation is caused by general shear failure. the shape of ground deformation caused by forced displacements was well defined be parabola . Upon comparing profiles and depth of forced displacement from the model test to those based on stress-baring capacity method commonly used, it has been found that deformation prediction using stress-bearing capacity method was not exact at the edge of loading.

  • New lake dike in Saemanguem area is 125km length and require a great amount of fill materials, but it's difficult to get the amount of materials and develop a quarry because of environment conservation. Therefore, the solution is to use the dredged soil in project area as the fill materials not to develop quarry. However, characteristic of dredged soil as a silty fined sand is very weak at seepage, sliding, erosion of dike due to infiltration of rainfall, wind etc. So, lake dike using dredged soil must be constructed safely against the unstable problem of dredged sand. The objective of research is to make safe lake dike using dereged soil on construction of Saemangeum new lake dike. So, we analyzed the characteristic of dredged soil and suggested a standard section of lake dike.

  • 골재의수요는 매년 크게 증가하고 있으나 천연골재는 점차 고갈되어 가고 있다. 따라서 기존석산들에서 발생되는 폐석자원을 쇄석골재로 활용하면 일거양득의 효과가 있다. 본 연구는 국내에서 가장 대규모 석산단지인 포천 및 익산지역 기존석산에서 발생되는 석산폐석에 대한 물리적, 화학적 및 광물학적 시험.분석을 실시하여, 쇄석골재로서 석산폐석의 특성규명과 활용가능성을 평가하였다. 연구결과, 포천과 익산지역에서 발생되는 석산폐석을 쇄석골재로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단되었으며, 폐석자원을 쇄석골재로 활용함으로써 골재의 수요에 보충하고, 산림 및 자연경관의 훼손과 환경오염을 야기할 수 있는 석산골재 신규개발의 억제에도 효과가 기대된다.

Flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams with silica fume and processed quarry fines

  • This paper studies the influence of silica fume and Processed Quarry Fines (PQF) on the flexural behaviour of the reinforced concrete beams by experimental as well as numerical studies. The study has been shown that the incorporation of PQF can significantly increase the stiffness and the flexural strength of reinforced HPC beams. Also, the ultimate strength of specimens prepared with the 10% silica fume and 100% PQF are higher compared to conventional reinforced concrete specimen. Numerical analysis is performed to find the ultimate strength of HPC beams to compare with experimental results. Nonlinear behaviour of steel reinforcing bars and plain concrete is simulated using appropriate constitutive models and experimental results. The results indicate that the ultimate strength, deformed shape and crack patterns of reinforced HPC beams obtained through the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are confirming with the experimental results.
