Replacement of Normal Maize with Quality Protein Maize on Performance, Immune Response and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary replacement of normal maize (NM) with quality protein maize (QPM) on performance, immune response and carcass characteristics of broiler (Krishibro) chickens. Six experimental diets were prepared separately for starter and finisher phases. Diet 1 was a control diet formulated with NM and soybean meal. In diets 2-5, the NM was replaced with QPM at 25, 50, 75 and 100%, respectively. Diet 6 was the same as the control diet, but supplemented with synthetic lysine similar to the industry standard. Each test diet was fed to 8 replicates, each of 5 chicks, reared in stainless steel battery brooders. The AME content of QPM (3382 kcal/kg) was similar to that of NM (3,352 kcal/kg), but protein (9.91 vs. 8.94%), lysine (0.40 vs. 0.26%) and tryptophan (0.09 vs. 0.07%) contents of QPM were higher than NM. Dietary replacement of NM with 50% QPM significantly (p<0.05) improved body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, humoral immune response, relative bursa weight, and breast muscle yield and lowered abdominal fat content. No further improvement in these parameters was recorded by increasing the level of replacement of NM with QPM to either 75% or 100%. Further, the improvement noticed in the 50% QPM group was similar to the group fed the NM diet with lysine supplementation, and thus dietary replacement of NM with QPM at 50% did not need extra synthetic lysine supplementation. It is concluded that dietary replacement of NM with QPM at the 50% level resulted in optimum performance, higher breast muscle yield and higher immune response in broiler chickens.

Growth Characteristics and Variation in Amino Acids Composition of Quality Protein Maize Lines (고라이신(QPM) 주요 계통과 교잡계의 생육특성 및 아미노산 조성 변이)

  • Maize grain quality can be improved by raising lysine content, which is an essential amino acid present in insufficient quantities in normal maize. Maize varieties with such modifications are known as quality protein maize (QPM). To date, no Korean maize cultivars contain high amounts of lysine. To introduce quality protein maize to Korean cultivars, we crossed QPM CIMMYT maize lines (CML) with KS140, an elite inbred line used as a parent of several cultivars such as 'Gangdaok' and 'Pyeonganok'. We analyzed the phenotypic characteristics of F1 plants as well as the protein contents, amino acids, and fatty acids profiles of the self-pollinated seeds of the F1 hybrids, and evaluated the feasibility of CML as a source of QPM. Days to anthesis of the CML ranged from 78 to 90 days after planting (DAP), whereas a range of 81~87 was recorded for F1 hybrids. The average days to anthesis was 85 for KS140, CML, and the F1 hybrids. The protein content of the CML was measured to be between 9.1 and 12.1%, with the highest and lowest values being recorded in CML153 and 191, respectively. The F1 hybrids had protein contents of 9.1~11.1%, and the highest content was observed in KS141/CML188. The fatty acids profiles were very similar across all analyzed maize samples, and linoleic acid (C18:2) composed the greatest proportion. Glutamic acid made up the largest proportion of amino acids in all maize samples. Lysine composition was highest in CML155 (6.92% of all amino acids), with an average composition of 4.83% across the CML. In contrast, KS140 showed a lysine content of 2.51%. In F1 hybrids, the average lysine composition was 3.46%, and KS140/CML164 (4.18%) and KS140/CML163 (4.99%) contained more lysine than either parent. Taken together, these results indicate that CML could become promising QPM sources to improve grain quality in Korean maize cultivars.

Influence of Maize and Cowpea Intercropping on Fodder Production and Characteristics of Silage

  • A study was conducted to examine the influence of maize (Zea mays) and cowpea (Vigna unguniculata) intercropping on fodder biomass production and silage characteristics. Maize fodder was cultivated alone and intercropped with cowpea at seed ratio of 85:15 and 70:30. Fodder was harvested at heading stage (at about 35% dry matter). The data indicated significant increase in biomass and crude protein production of maize intercropped with cowpea at seed ratio 70:30 followed by seed ratio 85:15 as compared to maize alone. However, no (p>0.05) difference was observed in TDN production among the three treatments. Four types of silages from, I) maize alone, II) maize and cowpea (85:15), III) maize and cowpea (70:30) and IV) maize supplemented with 2.5% urea were prepared. After 60 days of ensiling period, silage samples were analysed for proximate composition and fermentation characteristics. Crude protein and lactic acid values of silages I, II, III and IV were 8.52, 9.82, 14.90 and 13.96% and 9.00, 9.38, 10.86 and 7.43%; respectively. In situ dry matter digestibility was maximum in silage III followed by silages II, IV and I. The results suggested that intercropping of maize and cowpea at seed ratio 70:30 increased fodder production and produced quality silage.

Quality and Physicochemical Characteristics of Korean Maize Hybrids according to the Seed and Pollen Parent (종자친과 화분친을 달리한 옥수수의 품질 및 이화학 특성)

  • This study investigated on the chemical components, quality characteristics, antioxidant compounds, and activity of maize hybrids according to the cultivar, and breeding maize seeds crossed with seed and pollen parent. The moisture, crude fat, crude ash, crude protein, carbohydrate, and amylose contents of maize hybrids were significantly different among cultivars, and seeded and pollinated maize. The L-, a- and b-value of maize hybrids were 39.81~47.21, -0.01~0.55 and 5.85~18.47, respectively. Water binding capacity, water solubility index and swelling power were 123.29~153.32, 4.69~5.76 and 20.11~21.47%, respectively. The phenolic compounds and radical scavenging activity of maize hybrids were significantly different among cultivars, and seeded and pollinated maize. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of maize hybrids were 1,335.41~1,876.29 ㎍/g and 184.24~453.95 ㎍ CE/g, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were 171.75~239.16 and 299.44~364.09 mg TE/100 g, respectively. As a result, it could be used as a basic data for cultivating phenol compounds and antioxidant activity in maize breeding.

Current Status and Prospect of Qauality Evaluation in Maize (옥수수의 품질평가 현황과 전망)

  • This paper is intented to present a information of various aspects of quality related characteristics and standards for grades in maize. Maize is world's one of the three most popular cereal crops and a primary energy supplement and can contribute up to 30, 60, and 98% of the dairy diet's protein, net energy, and starch, respectively. Maize is also processed into industrial goods by wet or dry milling. Sweet corn is a leader among vegetable crops and its production for fresh or processing markets is a major industry in many countries. Over the years, the combined efforts of breeders and geneticists, biochemists, food scientists, and others have helped bring us to the point where we understand issues related to sweet corn quality. Traditional criteria for selecting corn hybrids have been based primarily on agronomic factors, including grain production, disease resistance, drought tolerance, and storage characteristics. Little emphasis has been placed on the quality and nutritional values of corn. Although there is widespread interest for value-enhanced corns have increased tremendously in the last five years, there is limited information available on the production and comparing the quality attributes of specialty grains with those of normal yellow dent corn. Most countries have developed national maize standards, aiming to provide a framework for trade, both internal and external. Where trading involves direct choice and price negotiation in front of the commodity, grading standards are rarely employed; quality is assessed visually and is influenced by end-use, and the price is determined more by local rather than national factors. The use of an agreed standard will provide an unambiguous description of the quality of the consignment and assist in the formation of a legally-binding contract. Standards can also be seen to protect consumers rights through setting limits to the amount of unsuitable or noxious material.

Characterization on Fatty Acids and Amino Acids of Quality Protein Maize Lines (Quality Protein Maize 육성계통의 지방산 및 아미노산 특성)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional properties of quality protein maize (QPM) and to select the elite lines for corn breeding. Two laboratory procedures for simultaneous identification of QPM and lysine content analysis were performed. The $BC_{1}F_{2}$ lines of KS5/QPM and KS135/QPM were analyzed with opaque-2(o2) specific SSR marker in order to differentiate the opaque-2 carrying QPM lines from the non-opaque genotypes. Although no significant difference in protein content, significant differences in lipid, ash, and crude fiber contents were observed. The composition of unsaturated fatty acid of QPM lines was slightly lower than non-QPM lines, but there was no significant difference. Sulphur-containing amino acids such as methionine and cystine showed no difference between QPM and non-QPM lines. However, lysine content of QPM lines was 38% higher than that of non-QPM lines, and the essential amino acid content of QPM lines (28.1%) was higher compared to non-QPM lines (27.1%).

  • Microbiological examination of silage is of little value in gauging the outcome of silage, and so chemical analysis is more reliable and meaningful indicator of quality. On the other hand chemical assessments of the principal fermentation products provide an unequivocal basis on which to judge quality. Livestock require energy, protein, minerals and vitamins from their food. While fresh forages provide these essential items, conserved forages on the other hand may be deficient in one or more of them. The aim of the conservation process is to preserve as many of the original nutrients as possible, particularly energy and protein components (Woolford, 1984). Silage fermentation is important to preservation of forage with respect of feeding value and animal performance. Chemical and bacteriological changes in the silo during the fermentation process can affect adversely nutrient yield and quality (Moe and Carr, 1984). Many of the important chemical components of silage must be assayed in fresh or by extraction of the fresh material, since drying either by heat or lyophilisation, volatilises components such as acids or nitrogenous components, or effects conversion to other compounds (Abrams et al., 1987). Maize silage dorms the basis of winter rations for the vast majority of dairy and beef cattle production in Uruguay. Since nutrient intake, particularly energy, from forages is influenced by both voluntary dry matter intake and digestibility; there is a need for a rapid technique for predicting these parameters in farm advisory systems. Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) is increasingly used as a rapid, accurate method of evaluating chemical constituents in cereals and dried forages. For many years NIRS was applied to assess chemical composition in dry materials (Norris et al., 1976, Flinn et al., 1992; Murray, 1993, De Boever et al., 1996, De la Roza et al., 1998). The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the potential of NIRS to assess the chemical composition of dried maize samples and (2) to attempt calibrations on undried samples either for farm advisory systems or for animal nutrition research purposes in Uruguay. NIRS were used to assess the chemical composition of whole - plant maize silage samples (Zea mays, L). A representative population of samples (n = 350) covering a wide distribution in chemical characteristics were used. Samples were scanned at 2 nm intervals over the wavelength range 400-2500 nm in a NIRS 6500 (NIRSystems, Silver Spring, MD, USA) in reflectance mode. Cross validation was used to avoid overfitting of the equations. The optimum calibrations were selected on the basis of minimizing the standard error of cross validation (SECV). The calibration statistics were R$^2$ 0. 86 (SECV: 11.4), 0.90 (SECV: 5.7), 0.90 (SECV: 16.9) for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) in g kg$\^$-1/ on dry matter, respectively for maize silage samples. This work demonstrates the potential of NIRS to analyse whole - maize silage in a wide range of chemical characteristics for both advisory farm and nutritive evaluation.

Effects of Ensiling Alfalfa with Whole-crop Maize on the Chemical Composition and Nutritive Value of Silage Mixtures

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, in vitro DM degradability, ME and OMD of alfalfa-maize silage mixtures in comparison to pure maize and alfalfa silages, and to test the existence of associative effects of ensiling alfalfa forage with whole-crop maize using the in vitro gas production technique. Ensiling alfalfa with whole-crop maize had a significant (p<0.001) effect on chemical composition, pH, in vitro DM degradability, OMD and estimated ME values of mixtures. DM content of the resultant silages significantly increased with increasing proportion of whole-crop maize in the mixtures, whereas the pH value, crude protein (CP), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and ash contents of mixtures decreased due to the dilution effect of whole-crop maize which was low in CP, ADF and ash. The pH values of all alfalfa-maize silage mixtures were at the desired level for quality silage. Gas production of alfalfa-maize silage mixtures at all incubation times except 12 h increased with increasing proportion of whole-crop maize. When alfalfa was mixed with whole-crop maize in the ratio 40:60, ME and OMD values were significantly (p<0.001) higher than other silages. Maximum gas production ($A_{gas}$) ranged from 65.7 to 78.1 with alfalfa silage showing the lowest maximum gas production. The results obtained in this study clearly showed that maximum gas production increased with increased percentage of whole-crop maize in the silage mixtures (r = 0.940, p<0.001). It was concluded that ensiling alfalfa with whole-crop maize improved the pH, OMD and ME values. However, trials with animals are required to see how these differences in silage mixtures affect animal performance.

Chemical compositions and antioxidant characteristics of Korean maize hybrids in different cropping seasons

  • The climate change impact has facilitated double cropping system on maize production in Korea. The objectives of this study were to investigate the chemical composition changes according to the sowing dates on double cropping in 8 dent type, 2 intermediate type, and 4 semiflint type of Korean maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids and evaluate its antioxidant characteristics. Fourteen maize hybrids were sown on April 5 and July 5 of 2015. The average crude protein contents in dent and semiflint type maize sown on April 5 were higher than those sown on July 5 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in average of total amino acid contents in all types of maize according to the sowing dates. Major amino acid in maize hybrids were glutamic acid followed by proline, alanine, and aspartic acid, which has no significant difference according to the sowing dates. The average crude fat contents in semiflint and intermediate type maize sown on April 5 were higher than those sown on July 5 (p<0.05). The average composition of saturated fatty acid in dent type maize sown on April 5 was higher than those sown on July 5. However, the average unsaturated fatty acid composition showed the opposite result (p<0.05). Fatty acids were mainly composed of linoleic acid (C18:2) and oleic acid (C18:1) in maize hybrids. The average oleic acid percentage of dent and semiflint type maize sown on April 5 were higher than those sown on July 5, while the average linoleic acid was lower. The average amylose content of all types of maize sown on April 5 was higher than those sown on July 5. On the other hands, the average carotenoid contents had the opposite result (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in total average of polyphenol contents and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities in all types of maize based on the sowing date. Total polyphenol contents had positive correlation with DPPH (r=0.33, p<0.01) and ABTS (r=0.50, p<0.0001) radical scavenging activities. In conclusion, the kernel composition affects maize quality. These data are useful for maize breeding program and cultivation and food processing industry.

The effect of particle size on the determinability of maize composition in reflection mode.

  • Maize, in Hungary, is the fodder-plant grown in the biggest quantity. It is not only used as a fodder but other products such as iso-sugar are made from it, too. The quality of the fodder and the produce is largely dependent on the composition of the supplied maize to the processing site. The examination of quality parameters besides conventional methods are investigated and measured by NIR spectroscopy on a routine basis. The investigated parameters are the following: water, total protein, starch and oil content. The accuracy and precision of determining these parameters we, apart from the wet chemical methods, influenced by sample preparation to a great extent. One of the main features of this is the sample particle size and its distribution across the sample. The uneven distribution of particle size negatively influences the measurement accuracy, decreases model robustness and prediction ability. With these in mind the aim of our experiment was to investigate the effect of particle size on the accuracy of maize composition determination using reflection measurement setup. In addition, we tested different spectrum transformations, which are suitable for canceling this effect. In our experiment 47 samples were analyzed with three different mesh sizes (1.5mm, 1.8mm and 2mm). The results of our findings are presented here.
