High-efficiency white organic light-emitting diodes(WOLEDs) were fabricated with two emissive layers and an blocking layer was sandwiched between two phosphorescent dopants, bis(3,5-difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl-(2-carboxypyridyl) iridium III(FIrpic) as the blue emission and a newly synthesized red phosphorescent material guest, bis(5-acetyl-2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2') acetylacetonate($(acppy)_2Ir(acac)$). This blocking layer prevented a T-T annihilation in a red emissive layer, and balanced with blue and red emission as blocking of hole carriers. The white device showed Commission Internationale d'Eclairage($CIE_{x,y}$) coordinates of (0.317, 0.425) at 22400 $cd/m^2$, a maximum luminance of 27300 $cd/m^2$ at 268 $mA/cm^2$, a maximum luminous efficiency and power efficiency of 26.9 cd/A and 18.6 lm/W.

Background: Environmental tobacco smoking (ETS) significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality and is a known risk factor for lung cancer development in lifelong nonsmokers. The metabolite 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and its glucuronides (NNAL-Glucs) have now emerged as leading biomarkers for the study of carcinogen exposure in non-smokers exposed to ETS. Materials and Methods: We carried out our study on NNAL in the urine of non-smokers exposed to ETS and the association between ETS and lung cancer. Subjects were enrolled from 2008-2010. NNAL was analyzed for 74 non-smoking lung cancer and 85 healthy controls. The main objective of this study was to provide an estimate of the risk of lung cancer from exposure to ETS in the Korean population. Results: The mean NNAL concentration in urine was significantly lower in non-smoking patient groups (n=74) than in control groups (n=85) ($4.7{\pm}15.0$ pg/mg, $6.5{\pm}17.9$ pg/mg, respectively, Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.001). Conclusions: The urine NNAL of non-smoking patients with lung cancer was not elevated with regard to the non-smoking control group. This may be due to life-style changes after diagnosis. A prospective study will be needed to evaluate the association of NNAL and non-smoking lung cancer.

This investigation assessed the berry quality after two months of low-temperature storage (3 ± 1℃) of 'Shine Muscat' grapes, which were treated with CPPU (N-[2-chloro-4-pyridyl]-N'-phenylurea) or TDZ (1-phenyl-3-[1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl] urea) in combination with gibbrellic acid (GA3). The berry shatter rate was the lowest (1%) in 4 cm + CPPU treatment, while it was the highest (2.4%) in 3 cm floral length treated with CPPU. On the other hand, the 4 cm + TDZ treatment resulted in a shatter rate of 2.0%, which was twice as high as that observed after 4 cm + CPPU treatment. The 4 cm + TDZ treatment resulted in a 5.5% berry decay rate, which was the highest among all treatments. Alternatives to using a sulfur dioxide (SD) pad to maintain the quality of 'Shine Muscat' grapes, namely, using ethylene scrubbers (ESs, 3 g × 2 sachet) and alcohol releasers (ARs, 2 g × 2 sachet) in a 2 kg carton package for export, were explored in this study. The berry shatter rate with ES treatment (1.0%) was found to be comparable to that with SD treatment (0.6%) during three months of cold storage. Regarding the berry decay rate, that of the untreated control surged to 36.0% in the three months of storage, followed by 19.9% and 15.5% in samples subjected to AR and ES treatments respectively. Compared with the untreated control, the samples subjected to SD treatment showed a decay rate of 2.2%, which was the most effective in reducing berry decay by 95%. These results demonstrated that SD pad treatment of 'Shine Muscat' grapes was the most effective method of maintaining berry quality, and ES treatment partially reduced the berry shatter and berry decay rates.

A new blue phosphorescent material for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), Iridium(III)bis[2-(4-fIuoro-3-benzonitrile)-pyridinato-N,C2'] picolinate (Firpic-CN), was synthesized and studied. We compared characteristics of Firpic-CN and Bis(3,5-Difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl-(2-carboxypyridyl) iridium III (FIrpic) which has been used for blue dopant materials frequently. The devices structure were indium tin oxide (ITO) (1000 ${\AA}$)/N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-(2-napthyl)-(1,1'-phenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPB) (500 ${\AA}$)/4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphyenyl (CBP) : FIrpic and FIrpic-CN (X wt%)/4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BPhen) (300 ${\AA}$)/lithum quinolate (Liq) (20 ${\AA}$)/Al (1000 ${\AA}$). 15 wt% FIrpic-CN doped device exhibits a luminance of $1450\;cd/m^2$ at 12.4 V, luminous efficiency of 1.31 cd/A at $3.58mA/cm^2$, and Commission Internationale d'Eclairage $(CIE_{x,y})$ coordinates of (0.15, 0.12) at 12 V which shows a very deep blue emission. We also measured lifetime of devices and was presented definite difference between devices of FIrpic and FIrpic-CN. Device with FIrpic-CN as a dopant presented lower longevity due to chemical effect of CN ligand.
The carcinogenicity of chemicals in the environment is a major concern. Recently, numerous studies have attempted to develop methods for predicting carcinogenicity, including rodent and cell-based approaches. However, rodent carcinogenicity tests for evaluating the carcinogenic potential of a chemical to humans are time-consuming and costly. This study focused on the development of an alternative method for predicting carcinogenicity using quantitative PCR (qPCR) and colon cancer stem cells. A toxicogenomic method, mRNA profiling, is useful for predicting carcinogenicity. Using microarray analysis, we optimized 16 predictive gene sets from five carcinogens (azoxymethane, 3,2'-dimethyl-4-aminobiphenyl, N-ethyl-n-nitrosourea, metronidazole, 4-(n-methyl-n-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone) used to treat colon cancer stem cell samples. The 16 genes were evaluated by qPCR using 23 positive and negative carcinogens in colon cancer stem cells. Among them, six genes could differentiate between positive and negative carcinogens with a p-value of ${\leq}0.05$. Our qPCR-based prediction system for colon carcinogenesis using colon cancer stem cells is cost- and time-efficient. Thus, this qPCR-based prediction system is an alternative to in vivo carcinogenicity screening assays.
In this study we investigated whether ATP loss was involved in the potentiated death of immunostimulated rat primary astrocytes in glucose-deprived condition. Rat primary astrocytes immunostimulated with LPS plus IFN-${\gamma}$ for 48 h underwent death upon glucose deprivation, which dependent on the production of peroxynitrite. Intracellular ATP level synergistically decreased by glucose deprivation in immunostimulated astrocytes but not in control cells, and the loss of ATP occurred well ahead of the LDH release. The synergistic cell death and ATP loss by immunostimulation and glucose deprivation were inhibited by iNOS inhibitor (L-NAME and L-NNA) or peroxynitrite decomposition catalyst (also a superoxide anion scavenger), Mn(III)tetrakis(N-methyl-4'-pyridyl)porphyrin (MnTMPyP). Exogenous addition of peroxynitrite generator, SIN-l timedependently induced ATP loss and cell death in the glucose-deprived astrocytes. Depletion of intracellular glutathione (GSH) and dis겨ption of mitochondrial transmembrane potential (MTP) were also observed under same conditions. Supply cellular ATP by the addition of exogenous adenosine or ATP during glucose deprivation inhibited ATP depletion, GSH depletion, MTP disruption and cell death in SIN-l treated or immunostimulated astrocytes. This study showed that perturbation in the regulation of intracellular ATP level in immunostimulated astrocytes might make them more vulnerable to energy challenging stimuli.

High-efficiency white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) were fabricated with two emissive layers and a spacer was sandwiched between two phosphorescent dyes which were, bis(3,5-Difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl-(2-carboxypyridyl) iridium III (FIrpic) as the blue emission and bis(5-acetyl-2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2') acetylacetonate $((acppy)_2Ir(acac))$ as the red emission. This spacer effectively prevented a triple-triple energy transfer between the two phosphorescent emissive layers with blue and red emission that was showed a improved lifetime. The white device showed Commission Internationale De L'Eclairage $(CIE_{x,y})$ coordinates of (0.33, 0.42) at $22400\;cd/m^2$, a maximum luminance of $27300\;cd/m^2\;at\;0.388\;mA/cm^2$, and a maximum luminous efficiency of 26.9 cd/A.
[FeⅢ(BLPA)DBC]BPh4, a new functional model for the catechol dioxygenases, has been synthesized, where BLPA is bis((6-methyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and DBC is 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate dianion. The BLPA complex has a structural feature that iron center has a six-coordinate geometry with N4O2 donor set. It exhibits EPR signals at g=5.5 and 8.0 which are typical values for the high-spin FeⅢ (S=5/2) complex with axial symmetry. The BLPA complex reacts with O2 within a few hours to afford intradiol cleavage (75%) and extradiol cleavage (15%) products which is very unique result of all [Fe(L)DBC] complexes studied. The iron-catecholate interaction of BLPA complex is significantly stronger, resulting in the enhanced covalency of the metal-catecholate bonds and low energy catecholate to FeⅢ charge transfer bands at 583 and 962 nm in CH3CN. The enhanced covalency is also reflected by the isotropic shifts exhibited by the DBC protons, which indicate increased semiquinone character. The greater semiquinone character in the BLPA complex correlates well with its high reactivity towards O2. Kinetic studies of the reaction of the BLPA complex with 1 atm O2 in CH3OH and CH2Cl2 under pseudo-first order conditions show that the BLPA complex reacts with O2 much slower than the TPA complex, where TPA is tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine. It is presumably due to the steric effect of the methyl substituent on the pyridine ring. Nevertheless, both the high specificity and the fast kinetics can be rationalized on the basis of its low energy catecholate to FeⅢ charge transfer bands and large isotropic NMR shifts for the BLPA protons. These results provide insight into the nature of the oxygenation mechanism of the catechol dioxygenases.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate environmental exposure to tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) by conducting an analysis of the concentration of TSNAs in deposited dust collected from a fertilizer plant and the surrounding village, a simulation of high-temperature drying of tobacco waste, and CALPUFF modeling. Methods: The raw materials of the products, deposited dust (inside and outside the plant and residential area), soil, and wastewater were sampled and the TSNA concentrations were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. As the plant was closed down before the investigation, simulation tests were conducted to confirm the substances discharged during high-temperature (300℃) drying of tobacco waste. CALPUFF modeling was performed to identify the area of influence due to exposure to TSNAs. Results: TSNAs were detected in organic fertilizers estimated to contain tobacco waste, deposited dust, and soil collected from inside and outside the plant. N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), 4-(methylnitrosoamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), and N'-nitrosoanatabine (NAT) components were detected in five of 15 deposited dust samples collected from the residential area around the plant, while TSNAs were not detected in the five sampling points in the control area. Also, the simulation test for the high temperature drying of tobacco waste found emissions of TSNAs. The CALPUFF modeling results showed that the survey area was likely to be included in the area of influence of TSNA emissions from the plant. Conclusions: It is estimated that harmful tobacco ingredients such as TSNAs were dispersed in nearby areas due to the illegal use of tobacco waste as a raw material to produce organic fertilizers at the plant. These findings assume that the residents have been exposed to TSNAs and suggest that the need for the establishment of measures to manage environmental health.
