  • Field observations for research of oceanographic characteristics in waters adjacent to fish farm on land and water quality at area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm are carried out in coastal waters of Pyoson located in the southeastern region of Jeju Island in March, May, August and November of 2000. Semidiurnal tides to the northeast and southwest dominate. The mean velocities of current around neap tides and spring tides are 8.52cmㆍs$^{-1}$, 28.63cmㆍs$^{-1}$, respectively. The difference of temperature between area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm is about 0.6$^{\circ}C$. Seasonal variation range for temperature and salinity is 13.5$^{\circ}C$ and 3.5psu, individually. Concentrations of nitrate(NO$_3$$^{-}$), phosphate(PO$_4$$^{3-}$ ), silicate(SiO$_2$) and COD(chemical oxygen demand) are high in autumn. Particularly, concentrations of nitrate and COD in winter and spring at station where water is supplied to fish farm are higher than these at station where water is dischared from fish farm. However, concentration of phosphate and silicate at station where is supplied to fish farm in spring, summer and autumn is higher than that at station where water is dischared from fish farm. Water quality in the study area is grade 1 and this level is kept up in the whole year.

  • Germination and vegetative growth of Enteromorpha multiramosa Bliding from Pyoson, Cheju Island were investigated in laboratory under various combinations of temperature (5-$25^{\circ}C$) and salinity (8-48$^{\circ}C$). Percent level of germination was relatively high at all combinations of the two factors. The highest value among the combinations was revealed at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 32$\textperthousand$. Dry weight also was fairly high at all levels of combination with maximum value at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 32$\textperthousand$. Analysis of variance for germination and growth was completed respectively and polynomial prediction models were constructed. F ratio revealed that all factors had a significant effect (p<0.001) on percentage of germination and dry weight, and their interactions also were significant (p<0.001), although the F ratio of interactions was far less than that for either the separate effect of temperature or salinity. Response surface of polynomial equation represented that temperature influenced less than salinity on germination, while it effected remarkably on vegetative growth, so the Enteromorpha multiramosa was kept to visible macrothalli from winter to spring in Cheju Island.

  • For the culture the population growth, shell length and spawning seasons of Gomphina veneriformis, and its environmental factors, were investigated at the Jeju coastal regions. from Feburuary, 1975 to March, 1976. The soil movements of the tidal flats where the clams inhabited were relatively rapid during the strong tidal actions. The rate of population growth were rapid from April to September, then became obsure. The relative growth equations of the shell height (SH) and the shell breadth (SB) against the shell length (SL) of the clams were as follows: Changhung : SH=0.751 SL + 0.685, SB=0.448 SL-0.630 Pyoson : SH-0.775 SL - 0.115, SB=0.464 SL-1.008 Hwhason : SH=0.794 SL - 0.923, SB=0.485 SL-1.155 Kwhagzee : SH=0.771 SL - 0.644, SB=0.455 SL-1.049 The meat weight increases of the clams were continued from March to late June, then it decreased sharply up to late August. The spawning of the clams seems to be late from June to Spetember in the regions studied.

  • The study had been carried out three times, from April 1987 for the purpose of analysis on the community structure and the distribution patterns of the Molluscan shells at the intertidal zone of Cheju Island. 1) The Molluscan shells collected and identified at all studied sites were composed of 3 classes, 10 orders, 23 families and 42 species.2) In all studied sites, individual numbers according to species were Nodilittorina exigua, Monodonta neritoides, Lunella coronata coreensis, Heminerita japonica in order. On the other hand, the dominant species of the rocky sits were N. exigua, M. neritoides and the rocky and silty-sand sites was Batillaris multiformis.3) In the vertical zonation, in the supralitorial zone, N. exigua was dominant species and the wpper-tidal zone, N. exigua, H. japonica and B. Multiformis were dominant species, but B. multiformis was dominant in the rocky and silty sand sites. In the middle tidal zone, M. neritodes, H. japonica, L. coronata coreensis were dominant and in the lower tidal zond, M. neritodes, L. coronata coreensis, Liolophura japonica were dominant.4)In the analysis on community of Molluscan shells, Chagwi, Pyoson an dAewol sites were more diverse than other sites in the species diversity and environmental inhibits were also favorable.5) Community similarities among the studied sites based on the similarities values were divided into two groups according to the difference of the ground: Hagwi, Chongdal and Sehwa sites group and the others sites group.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the job satisfaction of foodservice managers at schools in Jeju, Korea, according to the organizational culture and commitment of the school foodservice and administrative departments. The subjects included 144 (98.6%) dieticians from Jeju schools. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, ttests, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients, using the SPSS Win 12.0 program. In terms of organizational culture, the dieticians perceived the 'human relations model' and 'internal process model' as the strongest types for the school foodservice departments and administrative departments, respectively. However, for both types, a gap existed between the organizational culture that was perceived and that which was expected. In particular, the subjects expected that the 'human relations model' and 'open systems model' were the most important organizational culture types. In terms of the subjects' organizational commitment scores, loyalty and pride scored highest whereas unity scored lowest. For the level of job satisfaction, the performed work itself scored highest and was deemed most important. Additionally, organizational culture was positively correlated to the factors affecting organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Finally, the surveyed managers had high demands for a human relations-oriented organizational culture to enhance job satisfaction.

  • A study on the distribution of V. parahaemolyticus among sea water, sea mud, and marine products in Hwabuk, Samyang, Daepo, Jungmun, Pyoson, Anduk, Aewol, and Gwakji on the coastal area of Jeju island was conducted from January to December in 2002. The 2,880 total specimens of 960 sea waters, 960 sea mud, 960 marine products were collected and studied for the rate of isolation of V. parahaemolyticus, and biochemical, serological and antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed. A total of 417 strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated and identified from 2,880 total specimens. In the test of biochemical properties, 100 of V. parahaemolyticus isolates in the presence of 0.85% NaCl were positive in the utilization of lysine, ornithine, indole, glucose, and mannitol, and negative in the utilization of ONPG, arginine, sodium citrate, urea, tryptophane, inositol, sorbitol, rhamnose, sucrose, and melibiose, $H_2S$ production and VP reaction, while positive or negative in gelatin liquefaction and utilization of amygdalin or arabinose. The isolation rates to the specimen were 161 strains (16.8%) from 960 of sea waters, 137 strains (14.3%) from 960 of sea mud, and 119 strains (12.4%) from 960 of marine products. The isolation rates of V. parahaemolyticus from 8 coastal areas were 14.4% (52/360) in Hwabuk area, 15.3% (55/360) in Samyang area, 13.6% (49/360) in Daepo area, 18.3% (66/360) Jungmun area, 13.1% (47/360) in Pyosun area, 16.4% (59/360) in Anduk area, 12.5% (45/360) in Aewol area and 12.2% (44/360) in Gwakji area, respectively. The distribution of 417 V. parahaemolyticus, isolates was high at Jungmun with 18.3% (66/360), and from sea water with 16.8% (161/960).
