  • The new cationic meso-substituted N-quarternized 4-pyridylporphyrins and their metal derivatives were synthesized as novel chemotherapeutics. The level of DNA damage induced by porphyrins TOBut4PyP, TOBut4PyP, TOEt4PyPMn and TOBut4PyPMn and its dependence on the chemical structure of compounds were analyzed by the Comet-assay. On the base of data obtained, the investigated porphyrins may be arranged by their genotoxic activity in the following order: TOEt4PyP>TOEt4PyPMn>TOBut4PyP>TOBut4PyPMn. Thus, i) the genotoxicity of the Mn-derivatives of TOEt4PyP and TOBut4PyP is higher than the original porphyrins and ii) the genotoxicity of TOEt4PyP and TOEt4PyPMn is increased after substitution of a butyl radical for ethyl one. The applied Comet-assay permits to reveal the dependence of DNA damage induction on the chemical structure of porphyrins.

  • We sequenced the rbcL gene in more than 100 collections of foliose Bangiales made in the Aleutian Islands and western Alaska Peninsula during the past 25 years. This work allows us to recognize four previously undescribed species, two in the genus Boreophyllum and two in Pyropia. Boreophyllum aleuticum appears to be endemic to the Aleutian Islands, whereas B. ambiguum is known to occur from the Yakutat area to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The two previously undescribed species of Pyropia are more broadly distributed. Pyropia taeniata, which was previously identified under the name Py. pseudolinearis, occurs from northern Southeast Alaska through the Aleutian Islands. Pyropia unabbottiae, which is sister to Py. abbottiae, occurs from southern Vancouver Island to Attu Island. Collections throughout the Aleutian Islands allow us to document the distribution of another dozen species of foliose Bangiales in this region, including Boreophyllum aestivale, Fuscifolium tasa, Pyropia fallax, Py. fucicola, Py. gardneri, Py. kurogii, Py. nereocystis, Py. pseudolanceolata, Py. torta, Wildemania amplissima, W. norrisii, and W. variegata. We were unable to confirm the occurrence of the following species previously recorded from the Aleutian Islands: Porphya ochotensis, Pyropia abbottiae, Py. perforata, Py. pseudolinearis, P. purpurea, P. umbilicalis, Py. yezoensis and Wildemania schizophylla. At least two undescribed filamentous Bangiales also occur in the Aleutian Islands.

  • $Mo_2O_4Cl_2$$(X-py)_4{\cdot}2H_2$O and $(X-pyH)_4$[$Mo_2O_4(NCS)_6)$]${\cdot}H_2$O have been prepared. The infrared, electronic and reflectance spectra, molar conductances and magnetic susceptibility data of complexes are reported. $Mo_2O_4Cl_2$$(X-py)_4{\cdot}2H_2$O (X-py were 3-and 4-cyanopyridine, nicotinamide, 3,5-lutidine and 2-amino-4-picoline) were obtained by hydrolysis of the corresponding substituted pyridinium oxopentachloromolybdates(Ⅴ). Addition of water and substituted pyridines to molybdenum(Ⅴ)-thiocyanate ethylacetate extract yielded brown compounds, $(X-pyH)_4$[$Mo_2O_4(NCS)_6)$]${\cdot}H_2$O where X-py were pyridine, ${\alpha}$, 3-bromopyridine 3,5-lutidine, 3-benzoylpyridine and 4-acetylpyridine. Binuclear, $Mo_2O_4Cl_2(X-py)_4{\cdot}2H_2$ prepared from hydrolysis of $(X-pyH)_2[MoOCl_5]{\cdot}H_2O$ were diamagnetic and nonelectrolytes. The anion of $(X-pyH)_4$[$Mo_2O_4(NCS)_6)$]${\cdot}H_2$O was formulated as dimer and electrolyte.

  • Dioxygen binding and homogeneous catalytic oxidation of hydrazobenzene were investigated by employing tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II) complexes such as Co(II)(SED)$(Py)_2$, Co(II)(SOPD)$(Py)_2$ and Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ in saturated oxygen methanol solvent. The major product of hydrazobenzene ($H_2$AB) oxidation by catalysts of superoxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$] complexes are trans-azobenzene (t-AB) and rate constants k for oxidation reaction was 7.692 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and 5.076 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$]. But cis-azobenzene (c-AB) are obtained as a major product with ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)]$_2O_2$ catalyst, and rate constant k is 1.266 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec. The rate constants of oxidation reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically and the rate law established. A mechanism involving a intermediate activated complexes of catalyst, hydrazobenzene and oxygen has been proposed. $H_2$AB + Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ Co(III)(Schiff base)(Py)$O_2$${\cdot}$$H_2$AB + Py $\longrightarrow^k$ Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + t-AB + $H_2O_2$(Scchiff base : SED and SOPD). $H_2$AB + 2Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ [Co(III)(SND)(Py)]$_2O_2$${\cdot}$H_2$AB + 2Py ${\longrightarrow}^k$ (Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + c-AB + $H_2O_2$.

  • The bleach efficiency between PY and YP bleaching of pulps, which were deinked in neutral (cellulase) and alkaline (NaOH, NaOH/${Na_2}{SiO_3}$) ranges, and were treated on kneader, was compared in this study. The brightness of pulps (84.8~88.4% ISO) which were deinked in alkaline or neutral ranges increased up to 88.4%~88.8% ISO after PY or YP bleaching. There was no difference in the brightness between PY and YP bleaching. And the dirt count of bleached pulps was similar each other at the range of 17~38 ppm. The tensile index of bleached pulps was slightly higher in PY bleaching than those in YP bleaching. While with the treatment of kneading, the brightness and dirt count decreased remarkably compared to those of no-kneading. However, the sharp difference in the brightnesses or in dirt count of bleached pulps decreased after bleaching. The brightness of bleached pulps at YP stages was only numberically higher than those at PY stages without regard to the treatment of kneading. Therefore, in the case of the neutral deinkiing process, the conversion of PY bleaching stages to YP bleaching stages was profitable to water loop system, and was harmless in the aspect of the bleach efficiency.

  • Green crystalline salts of substituted pyridinium oxopentachloromolybdates(V) were obtained from concentrated hydrochloric acid solution of molybdenum(V)-thiocyanate extract. $MoOCl_3(X-py)_2$ (X-py were 4-and 3-cyanopyridine, 2-amino-4-picoline and 4-acetylpyridine) were obtained by reflux of the corresponding substituted pyridinium salts of oxopentachloromolybdates(Ⅴ) in absolute ethanol. ($X-pyH_2$)[$MoOCl_5$]$H_2$O containing the $MoO^{3+}$ group are dissolved and hydrolysed in water but $MoOCl_3(X-py)_2$ are insoluble in water, alcohol and acetone. The complexes are paramagnetic compounds.

  • A cadimium-resistant strain isolated from Anyang stream, Azomonas agilis PY101 exhibited strong resistance to 1000 ppm of cadmium ion $(Cd^{2+})$. A agilis PY101 also exhibited resistance to various antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, amplicillin, bacitracin, cefazolin, erythromycin, penicillin, tetracycline, and vancomycin. In the presence of $Cd^{2+}$, the growth of A. agilis PY101 started after an extended lag phase and produced a green-fluorescent pigment induced by cadmium. The dramatic decrease (approximately 400ppm) of concentration of $cd^{2+}$ in the culture medium during the growth phase of A. agilis PY101 was confirmed by the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrophotometer. Transmission electron microscopic analysis revealed that A. agilis PY 101 actively accumulated $Cd^{2+}$ in the cytoplasm.

  • The GMR ($d_Cu$) oscillatory behaviour as well as the widths of first and the second antiferromagnetically coupled ranges of the Permalloy ($Py=Ni_{83}Fe_{17}$)/Cu multilayers have been found to be strongly affected not only by the presence of the superparamagnetic/paramagnetic entitles located at the Py/Cu interfaces but mainly by the existence of the magnetic bridges between Py layers. The effectiveness of the magnetic bridges has been found to be temperature dependent, leading to the temperature dependence of the remnant to saturation magnetization ratio ($M_R/M_S$). We have found that for Py/Cu multilayers with equal Py and Cu layer thicknesses a high field sensitivity of the GMR effect (0.4%/Oe) and negligible hysteresis can be achieved when the number of Py layers decreases from 100 to 6. Sensitivity can be further improved by increasing the Py layers thickness, but the hysterstic effect becomes more pronounced then.
