In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effects of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as fully rigid and semi-rigid. The fiber model was used to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, the power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection and the three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of the steel beam, column, and connection. The structure was idealized as separate 2-D frames and as connected 2-D frames. The peak ground accelerations of four earthquake records were modified in a time-history analysis for the levels of the mean return period and for the maximum base-shear force in a pushover analysis. The top story displacement, base-shear force, story drift, demanded ductility ratio for the semi-rigid connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were examined in the time-history analysis. The frame with the semi-rigid connection yielded a lower base-shear force, less magnitude, and increasing ratio in the bending moment of the column, beam, and connection than the frame with a fully rigid connection. The TSD connection was deemed to have secured the economy and safety of the sample structure that was subjected to seismic excitation for the Korean design level.

Torsional behavior due to the plane irregularities of the piloti building can cause excessive story drift in the torsionally outermost column, which can lead to shear failure of the column. As a seismic retrofit method that can control the torsional behavior of the piloti building, the expansion of RC wall, steel frame or steel brace may be used, but such methods may hinder the openness of the piloti floor. Therefore, in this study, linear dynamic analysis and nonlinear static analysis for piloti buildings retrofitted by knee brace were performed, and seismic performance evaluation and torsion control effect of knee brace were analyzed. The results showed that the shear force of the column increased when the piloti building retrofitted by knee brace, but it was effective in controlling the torsional deformation. In case of retrofit between knee brace and column by 30°, the shear force of the column increased less than that of 60°, and the lateral displacement of column was decreased in the order of □, ◯ and H in cross-section.

In this paper the overstrength factors, ductility factors, and response modification factors of ordinary concentric braced frames designed in accordance with a current seismic design code are determined by performing pushover analysis. According to the analysis results, the overstrength and the response modification factors turn out to be larger than the values regulated in the codes in most model structures. However if the braces are reinforced by BRB or zipper columns, the overstrength factors and response modification factors turn out to increase significantly.

This study developed an analytical model for predicting nonlinear behavior of PT flat plate frames having slab-column connections with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. The developed model can predict the failure sequence until punching failure occurs. For verifying the analytical model, the test results of PT flat plate slab-column connections were compared with the results of the analysis. Moreover, the results of static pushover test and shaking table test of 2 story PT flat plate frame were compared with analysis results. For evaluating seismic performance of PT flat plate frame, this study conducted nonlinear response history analysis of the 2 story PT flat plate frame with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column under 1940 El Centro ground motion scaled to have pseudo spectral acceleration of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7g at the fundamental period of the frame. This study observed that as ground motion is more intense, seismic demands for the frame having the connections without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column are larger than those without slab bottom reinforcement.

A probabilistic fragility assessment procedure is developed in this paper to predict risks of damage arising from seismic loading to the two-cell RC box tunnel. Especially, the paper focuses on establishing a simplified methodology to derive fragility curves which are an indispensable ingredient of seismic fragility assessment. In consideration of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect, the ground response acceleration method for buried structure (GRAMBS) is used in the proposed approach to estimate the dynamic response behavior of the structures. In addition, the damage states of tunnels are identified by conducting the pushover analyses and Latin Hypercube sampling (LHS) technique is employed to consider the uncertainties associated with design variables. To illustrate the concepts described, a numerical analysis is conducted and fragility curves are developed for a large set of artificially generated ground motions satisfying a design spectrum. The seismic fragility curves are represented by two-parameter lognormal distribution function and its two parameters, namely the median and log-standard deviation, are estimated using the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) method.

The capacity spectrum method (CSM) is a simple and graphical seismic analysis procedure. Originally, it has been developed for buildings, but now its applicability has been extended to bridge structures. It is based on the capacity curve estimated by pushover analysis and demand spectrum reduced from linear elastic design spectrum by using effective damping or strength reduction factor. In this paper, the inelastic demand spectrum as the reduced demand spectrum is calculated from the linear elastic design spectrum by using the several formulas for the strength reduction factor. The effects of the strength reduction factor for the capacity spectrum analysis are evaluated for 3 types of symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures. To investigate an accuracy of the CSM which several formulas for strength reduction factor were applied, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM are compared with the results obtained by nonlinear time history analysis for 8 artificially generated earthquakes. The maximum displacements estimated by the CSM using the SJ formula among the several strength reduction factors provide the most accurate agreement with those calculated by the inelastic time history analysis.

Nowadays, the pushover analysis technique is becoming a very useful tool for the prediction of inelastic behavior of structures in the seismic evaluation of existing buildings in the worldwide. However, the reliability of this analysis method has not been fully checked by the test results. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical response of a high-rise nonseismic reinforced concrete frame using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. This study concludes that the overall responses such as story-shear versus story-drift can be predicted with quite high reliability while the local deformations such as plastic rotations in the ends of critical members can not be described reasonably.

However, the reliability of this analysis method has not been fully checked by the test results. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the analytical and experimental response of a high-rise masonry infilled reinforced concrete frame using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. This study concludes that the strength and stiffness of members can be predicted with quite high reliability while the ductility capacity of members can not be described reasonably.
To evaluate inelastic seismic responses of multi-span bridge structures, the capacity spectrum method(CSM) incorporating the equivalent single-degree-of freedom(ESDOF) method is presented. Application of the CSM incorporating the ESDOF method is illustrated by example analysis for symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures. To investigate an accuracy of the CSM, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM are compared to those by inelastic time history analysis for several artificial earthquakes. The results show that the CSM provided conservative estimates of the maximum displacements for the symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures, and the trend of conservative estimates of the asymmetric bridge structures was significantly larger than that of the symmetric bridge structure.

Seismic responses of a building are affected due to the site soil conditions. In this study, linear time history seismic analysis and nonlinear pushover static seismic analysis were performed to estimate the base shear forces of the 3, 5 and 7-story steel structure buildings considering the rigid and soft soil conditions. According to the study results, the steel structure buildings designed for the gravity loads and wind load showed the elastic responses with the moderate earthquake of 0.11g, and the soft soil layer increased the displacement and the base shear force of a building. Therefore it is more resonable to perform an elastic seismic analysis of a building structure with the moderate earthquakes considering the characteristics of the soft soil layer.
