  • In this study, a biological odor treatment system was proposed to remove odor(foul smell) materials causing several problems in the closed sewage treatment plant. This odor treatment system was composed of a two-step biofilter system in one reactor. The two-step biofilter reactor was constructed with natural purification layer in upper part and artificial purification layer in lower part. The reed grasses of water purification plants were planted in the surface area and mixed porous ceramic media were filled with the lower part of biofilter reactor. By using the above experimental apparatus, the ammonia gas removal efficiency was attained to 98.3 % and the hydrogen sulfide gas removal efficiency was appeared more than 97.7 % which shows more effective than the conventional odor removal process.

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the water purification plant in order to increase the filtration efficiency. It has been found that a severe vibration was being felt on a upper structure of a mixer facility during steady state operation. The cause of the excessive vibration of the structure to which the mixer's shaft is supported has been evaluated through modal analysis on the shaft and vibration measurements during operation. The fundamental natural frequency of the mixer's shaft is found to be around 1.8 Hz and the main vibratory frequency around 30 Hz. It has been tuned out that the main vibratory frequency, 30 Hz is coincident with the fundamental holding frequency of the upper structure, and that the acceleration signal of the upper structure and the displacement signal of the mixer's shaft showed highly coherent to each other. Accordingly, it reveals that the main cause of the excessive vibration is due not to the mixer's vibration but to the natural frequency of the upper structure excited by flow turbulence.

  • The optimal operation of the water purification plant can be carried out only when the required flow rate is supplied in a timely manner using the minimum electrical energy by accurately predicting the pattern and amount of tap water used in the consumer. In order to ensure the stability of tap water production and supply, a system that can be pre-verified before applying AI-based composite sensors to the water purification plant was established to derive complementary matters through the pre-verification model for each composite sensor and improve the quality and operation stability of the composite sensor data.

  • Using the anaerobic digester gas as a fuel, fuel cells have the potential to provide significant environmental and economic benefits. A molten carbonate fuel cell power plant was installed in the municipal sewage works of Tancheon in Seoul. The fuel cell unit operates on anaerobic digester gas and provides power and heat for the sewage works. This is the first project of its kind in Korea. This article outlines the experiences of gas purification process with planning, installation and operation. The engineering and installation phase is described regarding to the special features of digester gas, for example impurities in gas composition. Such impurities would be harmful to fuel cells. Operational results from the field test with a gas purification process plant are presented in this paper.

  • Seeds are an ideal repository for recombinant proteins in molecular farming applications. However, in order to use plant seeds efficiently for the production of such proteins, it is necessary to understand a number of fundamental biological properties of seeds. This includes a full understanding of promoters which function in a seed-specific manner, the subcellular targeting of the desired polypeptide and the final form in which a protein is stored. Once a biologically active protein has been deposited in a seed, it is also critical that the protein can be extracted and purified efficiently. In this review, these issues are examined critically to provide a number of approaches which may be adopted for production of recombinant proteins in plants. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between subcellular localization and protein extraction and purification. The robustness and flexibility of seed-based production is illustrated by examples close to or already in commercial production.

  • YMV-K strains were purified from D. oppostita Thunb. tv. Dung-Gun-Ma showing mosaic symptom on their leaves. YMV-K strains were filamentous particles of 780nm in length and induced cytoplasmic disorder such as inclusion body formation. Nucleotide and amino acid sequences of 5'-UTR, Pl and CP of YMV-K strains shared 80.8, 64.7 and 98.3% identity respectively to JYMV J1 in the mean value. Purification of YMV-K strains according to JYMV purification method(S. Fuji) was conducted to product antiserum. With antiserum against YMV-K strains, the Various diagnosis methods such as IC-RT-PCR, DIBA, RIPA and indirect-ELISA were used to detect YMV-K strains in Chinese yam plant.

  • The feasibility as floricultural crops and water garden plant materials of Korean native water plants was investigated. Propagation type, growing and flowering time were observed for development as water garden, interior aquarium plant and water purification materials. Flowering time of the water plant was 7 species in May, 28 species in June, 49 species in July, 55 species in August, 47 species in September, and 17 species in October. Beautiful flowering water plants were Nymphaeaceae, Nymphoides peltata, Nymphoides indica, Monochoria korsakowii, Iris pseudacorus, Iris laevigata, and etc. Ornamental leafy water plants were Ceratopteris thalictroides, Ludwigia ovalis, Myriophyllum verticillatim, Limnophila sessiliflora, Blyxa aubertii, Blyxa echinosperma, Vallisneria asiatica, Hydrilla verticillata and Eleocharis acicularis etc. Isoetes japonica, Isoetes coreana and Isoetes sinensis were propagated by spore. • Membrane separation process is considered as an alternative of conventional water purification system using coagulationㆍsedimentation+sand filtration. In this study, it was examined that the application possibility of Hollowfiber Microfiltration membrane for water purification process. A $20m^3/day$ scale pilot plant was used for studying the possibility of long-term operation and the stability of water quality under the optimum conditions, 0.03m/h permeate flux, filtration for 10 minutes, pause for 2 minutes(including air-scrubbing for 30 seconds), obtained by lab-scale experiment. As a result, it was proved stability of pilot plant over one year and filtrate quality(Turbidity. SS etc). Therefore, it was proved that membrane separation process using Hollowfiber Microfiltration membrane can be applied for water purification system
