  • In this paper, we analyze the cycle structure of punctured finite-length RA-type LDPC codes and design interleavers which have good memory efficiency and avoid short cycles. Furthermore, we introduce the check-node merging scheme for punctured finite-length RA-type LDPC codes and design simple interleavers. Simulation results show that punctured finite-length RA-type LDPC codes using the proposed simple interleavers have better performance than those with random and S-random interleavers.

  • In this thesis, in order to apply a punctured convolutional codes to the trellis coded modulation(TCM), an efficient punctured trellis coded modulation(PTCM) based on the decomposition of the metric into orthogonal components is presented. Also, a simulation is performed in an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) and a rician fading channel modeling the mobile satellite channel. The PTCM combines punctured convolutional coding with MPSK modulation to provide a large coding gain in a power-limited or bandwidth-limited channel. However, in general the use of the punctured convolutional code structure in the decoder results in a performance loss in comparison to trellis codes, due to difficulties in assigning metrics. But, the study shows no loss in performance for punctured trellis coded MPSK in comparison to TCM, and what is more, the punctured convolutional codes results in some savings in the complexity of Viterbi decoders, compared to TCM of the same rate. Also, the results shows that the punctured trellis coded .pi./8 shift 8PSK is an attractive scheme for power-limited and band-limited systems and especially, the Viterbi decoder with first and Lth phase difference metrics improves BER performance by the mobile satellite channel.

  • In recent years there has been increased interest in a class of multiple-access techniques known as code division multiple-access(CDMA). As the trend for ever increasing data transmission rate and high error performance continues while conserving bandwidth, the needs arise for good highrate R=b/v convolu- tional codes such as punctured codes. In this paper, the packet error propability has been analyzed in code division multiple-access packet radio system which utilize punctured convolutional code and hard-decision Viterbi decoding.

  • Error control performance of punctured convolutional codes is considered in digital mobile radio communication wherein GMSK and DQPSK are assumed to be employed as a modulation scheme. Bit error rates of the two modulation systems with the punctured convolutional code are computed, and compared each other, some good punctured convolutional codes are searched and listed fork practical application to the digital mobile radio communication.

  • The next generation mobile communication systems require error correcting schemes that can be adaptable to various code rates and lengths with negligible performance degradation. Serial concatenated convolutional codes can be a good candidate satisfying these requirements. In this paper, we propose new rate-compatible punctured serial concatenated convolutional code (RCPSCCC) which performs better than the RCPSCCC proposed by Chandran and Valenti in the sense of the rate compatibility. These codes are evaluated and analyzed by using computer simulation and SNR evolution technique. As their application, Type-II hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) schemes using both RCPSCCCs are constructed and new RCPSCCC is shown to have better throughput.

  • Punctured convolutional codes increase transmission efficiency without increasing hardware complexity. However, Viterbi decoder supporting punctured codes requires long decoding length and large survivor memory to achieve sifficiently low bit error rate (BER), when compared to the Viterbi decoder for a rate 1/2 convolutional code. This Paper presents novel architecture adopting a pipelined trace-forward unit reducing survivor memory requirements in the Viterbi decoder. The proposed survivor path architecture reduces the memory requirements by removing the initial decoding delay needed to perform trace-back operation and by accelerating the trace-forward process to identify the survivor path in the Viterbi decoder. Experimental results show that the area of survivor path unit has been reduced by 16% compared to that of conventional hybrid survivor path unit.

  • Storage devices such as memories are widely used in various electronic products. They require high-density memory and currently the data has been stored in multi-level format, that results in high error rate. In this paper, we apply error correction schemes that are widely used in communication system to the storage devices for satisfying low bit error rate and high code rate. In A WGN channel with average BER $10^{-5}$ and $5{\times}10^{-6}$, we study error correction schemes for 4-1evel cell to achieve target code rate 0.99 and target BER $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-13}$, respectively. Since block codes may perform better than the concatenated codes for high code rate, and it is important to use less degraded inner code even when many bits are punctured. The performance of concatenated codes using general feedforward systematic convolutional codes are worse than the block code only scheme. The simulation results show that RSC codes must be used as inner codes to achieve good performance of punctured convolutional codes for high code rate.

In other to increase the coding performance and achieve the variable channel coding rate, serially concatenated convolutional coding scheme will be applied. In this paper, we characterize the effect of interleaver puncturing on the effectiveness of the proposed scheme some simulation results are presented, in which the channel model of additive Gaussian noise is assumed.

  • In wireless ATM system, powerful FEC code is required for highly reliable data transmission. In this paper, we propose an adaptive hybrid ARQ scheme using RCPSCCC for WATM system. The code rate of RCPSCC is adjusted to match channel conditions and data types. By using only the effective free distances of outer and inner encoders, we derive upper bounds of the bit and word error probabilities over Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. By applying RCPSCC to the adaptive hybrid ARQ protocol, highly reliable data transmission can be achieved.
