Case Study on In-situ Stress Measurement by Over-coring and Its Application to Design of a Pumped Storage Power Plant (오버코어링법에 의한 초기지압측정 및 양수발전소 설계적용사례)

  • With increasing development of underground space, underground pumped storage power plants, which generate power by felling water in upper reservoir to lower reservoir, have been continuously constructed. For efficient and safe design, construction and maintenance or such power plants, it is very important to understand in-situ stress and the mechanical properties of the surrounding rock mass at the design stage. The power plant presented in this paper is under construction at a depth of $320{\sim}375m$. For stability evaluation of the structure, in-situ stress was measured by over-coring method. Also pressurementer test and a series or laboratory tests were performed to obtain the mechanical properties. Numerical analyses were conducted to check the efficiency of designed support patterns. The results showed that unstable areas occurred partly in the numerical model, and therefore supports were additionally applied. Finally complete stability was obtained and the following excavation has been operated successfully until now.

  • The Battery Storage System (BSS) has been used in foreign country for Load Levelling, Flicker Compensation, Load Frequency Control, etc. because it has easy application characteristics compared to the other storage system such as the Pumped Hydro System, Compressed Air System, etc.. In this paper, the application field and available capacity of BSS is outlined in Korea.

  • Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro provides utilizing renewable power and reduce the using fossil fuels. On the other hand, it is too critical to apply power system due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, the continuous fluctuations of the power load, and the storage with high energy density. Energy storage system, including pumped-hydroelectric energy storage, compressed-air energy storage, superconducting magnetic energy storage, and electrochemical devices like batteries, supercapacitors and others have shown that solve some of the challenges. In this paper, we review the current state of applications of energy storage systems, and atomic layer deposition technology, graphene materials on the energy storage systems and processes.

  • In the past, pumping-storage generator pumped the water from the lower part storage to the upper part storage during the base load periods. And, it generated during the peak load or when other generator was outage. However, pumping-storage generator will operate different ways in the competitive power markets. It will pump during lower price periods and generate at higher price periods. This paper presents economic analysis of pumping-storage generator using price (or SMP) duration curve.

  • As the automic power plant is increased, load leveling energy storage system becomes more important. Pumped hydroelectric storage, used in the present, has too storage efficiency and difficulty in selecting site. But SMES(Superconducting Magnet Energy Storage) has high storage efficiency (90%), fast time response characteristics and ease of location. The general object of SMES with electric power system is the minimization overall production cost. This paper presents a method for the economic operation of SMES by Dynamic Programming.

  • Demand for electricity is increasing annually. Especially, the daytime demand grawth shows higher than any other time period. So the big difference between maximum and minimum electrical demand becomes another important problem to be solved. The Battery Energy Storage System is chosen as one of the solutions among the sevral methods. The purpose of utilization of Battery Energy Storage System is to improve the daily load factor. Also, Battery Energy Storage System may be used for the load levelling or the load shifting as well as the spinning reserve. Up to now, only the pumped hydro power plant system has been operated on the commercial basis, but this system has so many constraints such as site, environmental effects, construction period, ect. Being considered current electrical power situation the development of electric storage system is in need latly. Among the various electric storage systems, Battery Energy System is chosen with the top priority because it has sevral merits to cover such as the short construction period, the demand site installation, and the food environmental characteristics.
