  • The typical hydraulic hoisting system of the rack-bar type sluice gate is composed of a hydraulic supply unit using an uni-directional pump, a direction control valve, a hydraulic motor, a counter balance valve, and flow control valves. Here, the hydrostatic transmission is applied to the hoisting system of rack-bar type sluice gate to simplify the operation of gate such that the upward and downward direction of gate is simply controlled by the direction of pump rotation. The new hydraulic hoisting system is composed of a bi-directional pump, a hydraulic motor, a counter balance valve, two check valves, two pilot-operated check valves, two relief valves and a shuttle valve. The characteristics of a suggested system are analyzed by computer simulations and experiments.

  • In order to reduce energy consumption, secondary controlled system has been applied to many types of equipments. In lifting equipments or press machines using hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic transformer is used as a control component instead of a valve for motion control and a component for recovering potential energy of load. The transformer is a combination of a variable displacement pump/motor as a secondary controlled element and a fixed displacement pump/motor. In this paper the effect of transformer is studied. Multiple closed loop controllers with displacement feedback of variable pump/motor, speed feedback and position feedback of cylinder are used. The efficiency and energy consumption when cylinder is driven up and down is calculated by simulation. Simulation results show that considerable energy saving is achieved by choosing load ratio, circuit type and supply pressure.

  • The motion of single-rod cylinder is typically controlled by the directional control valve. In some case, the hydraulic system should be energized by the man power and at the same time the motion of a cylinder is controlled manually. It may be confusing for a man to do two things at the same time. The solution is to make up the closed hydraulic circuit with the bi-directional pump and single-rod cylinder without using a directional control valve. In the case of single-rod cylinder, the flows at the rod side and head side are so different that several valves should be installed to make the motion of single-rod cylinder possible. The hydraulic system is composed of a bi-directional pump, a single-rod cylinder, pilot operated check valves, a check valve and a counter balance valve for the purpose of actuating the lifter. The characteristics of a suggested system are analysized mathematically and numerically.

  • This paper deals with the issue of simple adaptive position control for a pump-controlled cylinder system. A fixed displacement pump is utilized instead of servo valve and its speed is controlled by AC motor. The whole control system is composed of a pair of interconnected subsystems, that is, a feedback control system and a feedforward control system. From experiments it is shown that position control using simple adaptive control can accomplish significant reduction in position tracking error comparing to a conventional PID control.

  • Most power steering systems work by using a hydraulic system to turn the vehicle's wheels. The pressure is usually provided by a hydraulic pump driven by the vehicle's engine. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder applies a force to the steering gear, which in turn applies a torque to the steering axis of the road wheels. The flow to the cylinder is controlled by valves operated by the steering wheel ; the more torque the driver applies to the steering wheel and the shaft it is attached to, the more fluid the valves allow through to the cylinder, and so the more force is applied to steer the wheels in the appropriate direction. Since the pumps employed are of the positive displacement type, the flow rate they deliver is directly proportional to the speed of the engine. And for a long time, the type of hydraulic pump pulley was boss welding type. But recently, monolith type driving pulley is widely used. Therefore in this paper we studied the safety of monolith type driving pulley to the extracting force and endurance by FEM analysis and experiments.

  • This paper presents a position control strategy for a pump-controlled electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) using feedforward control with disturbance compensation. As the disturbance observer is used to estimate nonlinear dynamics of EHA, which has valve-opening conditionals, as well as external disturbances, an additional feedforward control is adopted to achieve rapid response. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified through experiment using an EHA test bench. The proposed controller shows better tracking performance compared with a conventional PID controller.

Submerged hydraulic cargo pumps with hydraulic power packs and frequency converter controlled electric deepwell pumps will be investigated and compared on all aspects of initial cost, installation, operation and maintenance. The result of investigation shows Electric Systems have less manufacturing costs, higher environmental friendliness and reliable operation compare to Hydraulic Systems. Furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for Electric Systems onboard new ships and practical and empirical guidelines are constructed for further determine the design of the Electric Systems.

  • In this paper a new hybrid-type control system is proposed which reduces the pump speed of an electro-hydraulic actuator consisting of a pressure-compensated variable displacement piston pump and a valve-controlled hydraulic cylinder, whenever the flow rate demand is low. In order to avoid interfering with the pressure regulator which also has an effect on swash plate angle, the pump speed is changed in proportion to the mean value of the speed component of position commands. Additionally a pressure switch is employed to prevent the system pressure from getting lower than a reference value. Based on computer simulation & experimental results, it is shown that the hybrid control can save the idling power up to 44% at a stand-by mode by reducing the pump speed from 1,800 rpm to 600 rpm without affecting the dynamic response of the electro-hydraulic actuator.

  • Due to the friction characteristics of pump, cylinder packing and passenger car, in the elevation system actuated with hydraulic inverter, there exist dead zones. which cannot be controlled by a PID controller. To overcome the drawbacks, in this paper, we propose a new hybrid fuzzy-sliding mode control scheme, which controls the controller output between a sliding mode control output and a PID control output by fuzzy control method. The proposed hybrid control scheme achieves an improved control performance by using both controllers. We first propose a design method of the hybrid controller far a hydraulic system controlled by inverters, then propose a design method of a hybrid fuzzy-sliding mode centre] scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is shown by simulation results, in which the proposed hybrid control method yields better control performance then the PID controlled scheme, not only in the zero-crossing speed region but also in the overall control region including steady-state region.
