  • The "reactivity" of coal is one of the important characteristics of a coal used as a process raw material as well as a fuel. In this study, the reactivity was measured in terms of the magnitude of the reaction rate constant in the reduction of carbon dioxide with coal. A reactivity-testing apparatus was designed and constructed, and its performance characteristics were investigated by using Korean anthracite and hard-wood charcoal. Experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 750 to 1100$^{\circ}C$ with pulverized Korean anthracite whose sizes range from 1 to 10mm in diameter. Results showed that the reaction rate constant was not appreciably affected by the particle size investigated, and the reactivities of the anthracite and the charcoal were found to be a function of reaction temperature alone. It was also found that a straight line was produced when the logarithm of the rate constant is plotted against the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. The reactivities of the charcoal were found to be 2 to 10 times higher than those of the anthracite at a temperature ranging from 750 to 1100$^{\circ}C$, and 90% of carbon dioxide was reduced to carbon monoxide by the anthracite at a temperature above 1050$^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of unburned carbon (UBC) and NOx emissions for pulverized coal when air staging combustion is applied. A two-staged drop tube furnace capable of applying air staging combustion was designed and installed. The combustion of sub-bituminous (Tanito) has been investigated. UBC and the NOx concentration were measured under various temperatures and stoichiometric ratios in unstaged and staged combustion. As a result, UBC decreased and the NOx concentration increased with an increase in stoichiometric ratio and temperature. In particular, the NOx reduction mechanism was activated when the temperature in the fuel rich zone increased. Both UBC and the NOx concentration decreased as the temperature increased in the fuel rich zone. A high NOx reduction effect was obtained, compared to the UBC increase, when the air staging technique was applied.

  • This paper describes some computational results of various energy and environmental systems using Patankar's SIMPLE method. The specific topics handled in this study are jet bubbling reactor for flue gas desulfurization, cyclone-type afterburner for incineration, 200m tall stack for 500 MW electric power generation, double skin and heat storage systems of building energy saving for the utilization of solar heating, finally turbulent combustion systems with liquid droplet or pulverized coal particle. A control-volume based finite-difference method with the power-law scheme is employed for discretization. The pressure-velocity coupling is resolved by the use of the revised version of SIMPLE, that is, SIMPLEC. Reynolds stresses are closed using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ models. Two-phase turbulent combustion of liquid drop or pulverized coal particle is modeled using locally-homogeneous, gas-phase, eddy breakup model. However simple approximate models are incorporated for the modeling of the second phase slip and retardation of ignition without consideration of any detailed particle behavior. Some important results are presented and discussed in a brief note. Especially, in order to make uniform exit flow for the jet bubbling reactor, a well-designed structure of distributor is needed. Further, the aspect ratio in the double skin system appears to be one of important factors to give rise to the visible change of the induced air flow rate. The computational tool employed in this study, in general, appears as a viable method for the design of various engineering system of interest.

  • Economic feasibility for retrofitting the wet bottom ash handling system to the dry system in a existing 500MW${\times}$2 units pulverized coal thermal power plant in Korea was studied. Replacing to the dry system requires the initial capital costs of 13,415,127,000\, and saves the operating costs of 935,345,000\ per year. Economic analyses based on these results showed that the initial capital cost would not be recovered within the service life of the facilities at the interest rate of 10%, and the internal rate of return of 5.6% were obtained. Thus, the retrofitting to the dry system was not economically favorable in the current condition. However, the retrofitting would be profitable when the ash disposal cost and ash selling price were increased over 15,000\/MT or 17,000\/MT, respectively.

  • A Controlled Low-Strength Materials (CLSM) is suitable for mine backfilling because it does not require compaction owing to it high fluidity and can be installed quickly. Therefore, a CLSM utilizing $CO_2$-solidified Circulating Fluidzed Bed Combustion (CFBC) coal ash was developed and it's properties were investigated, since. $CO_2$-solidification of CFBC coal ash can inhibit exudation of heavy metals. The chemical composition and specific surface area of Pulverized coal Combustion fly ash and CFBC fly ash were analyzed. The water ratio, compressive strength and length change ratio of CLSM were confirmed. The water ratios differed with the specific surface area of the CLSM. It was confirmed that the porosity of CLSM affected its compressive strength and length change ratio.

  • A technique for determination of proportions of char, coal ana coke is needed in order to monitor pulverized coal injection performance in operating blast furnace. Quantitative X-ray powder diffraction analysis can be applied to the problem providing that structural information on carbonaceous materials, coal, char, coke and their mixture are known. Chars were prepared from a coal at different temperatures (1000∼1400$^{\circ}C$) and were characterised by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). The XRD result gave crystallite size (height Lc and diameter, La), aromaticity, number of (002) plane in carbon, and d-spacing. As a result, with increasing heat treat temperature of char, Lc$_{(002)}$, La$_{(10)}$ and number of (002) plane in carbon were increased, and d-spacing and FWHM(Full With Half Maximum) were decreased. Result of prediction of amount of char from the mixtures (char, coke and ore) based on the Lc$_{(002)}$ information of two mixtures (coke and char) showed very close values expected.

  • Fuel blend technique is one of the most effective way of using biomass to replace the coal. Many studies on combustion characteristics with coal and biomass blends have been conducted. In this study, char reactivity and emission characteristics of coal (Suek) and biomass (EFB) blends has been investigated by TGA and DTF to evaluate the applicability of the pre-treated (torrefaction, ash removal technology) EFB to pulverized coal boiler. In all blending cases, char reactivity improved as the blending ratio increases (10, 20, and 30%), especially torrefied EFB blended at 30%. Also, unburned carbon decreased as the blending ratio increases in all types of EFB. NOx emission showed the increase and decrease characteristics according to the content of fuel-N of raw EFB and torrefied EFB. But the amount of NOx emission at ashless EFB blends is greater than that of Suek despite of lower fuel-N. It indicated that co-firing effect of using the pretreatment biomass fuel is relatively better than those of the untreated biomass fuel about char reactivity and emission characteristics.

  • The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system is well known for its high efficiency compared with that of other coal fueled power generation system. IGCC offers substantial advantages over pulverized coal combustion when carbon capture and storage (CCS) is required. Commercial plants employ different types of quenching system to meet the purpose of the system. Depending on that, the downstream units of IGCC can be modeled using different operating conditions and units. In case with $CO_2$ separation and capture, the gasifier product must be converted to hydrogen-rich syngas using Water Gas Shift (WGS) reaction. In most WGS processes, the water gas shift reactor is the biggest and heaviest component because the reaction is relatively slow compared to the other reactions and is inhibited at higher temperatures by thermodynamics. In this study, tehchno-econimic assessments were found according to the quench types and operating conditions in the WGS system. These results can improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of coal gasification.

  • With the depletion of high grade coal, it is indispensable to be used co-combustion of low rank coal with bituminous coal in pulverized coal-fired power plants. This study describes the detailed measurements of combustion characteristics of bituminous and subbituminous coal in a 0.7MWth pilot-scale test facility. This experimental works include the measurement of gas temperature, gas concentrations along with the reactor axial and radial distance at the condition of excess air ratio of 1.2. The solid sampling was carried out and analyzed with the combustion of bituminous coal. The main reaction zone of coal flame in a reactor was formed about 1 m from the swirl burner, and at downstream, the fully developed temperature and species distribution was observed. The sampled particles of bituminous coal in a reactor revealed the complete carbon burn-out was achieved just after an main combustion zone.

  • The experiment was designed to compare the char combustion kinetics of pulverized Indonesia coals commonly utilized in Korea power plants. The reaction rate of coal char has been formulated using the external and internal effectiveness factors to describe the diffusion effect quantitatively. The Random Pore Model (RPM) was used for applying internal specific surface area as a function of carbon conversion ratio. Reaction rate was obtained from reaction time using the Wire Heating Reactor (WHR) which can heat and measure the char particle temperature at the same time. BET and TGA were used to obtain physical properties such as internal specific surface area and structural parameter. Three kinds of Indonesia Sub-bituminous coals "BARAMULTI, ENERGYMAN, AGM" were used in order to derive the activation energy and pre-exponential factor. The results of this study showed that the effect of internal diffusion than that of external diffusion is the dominant as comparison of kinetics was reflected in external and internal effectiveness factors. For three kinds of coal char, finally, activation energy of intrinsic kinetics indicates 110~118 kJ/mol.
