Semi-active control equipments are used to effectually enhance the seismic behavior of structures. Magneto-rheological (MR) dampers are semi-active devices that can be utilized to control the response of structures during seismic loads and have received voracious attention for response suppression. They supply the adaptability of active devices and stability and reliability of passive devices. This paper presents an optimal fuzzy logic control scheme for vibration mitigation of buildings using magneto-rheological dampers subjected to near-fault ground motions. Near-fault features including a directivity pulse in the fault-normal direction and a fling step in the fault-parallel direction are considered in the requisite ground motion records. The membership functions and fuzzy rules of fuzzy controller were optimized by genetic algorithm (GA). Numerical study is performed to analyze the influences of near-fault ground motions on a building that is equipped with MR dampers. Considering the uncontrolled system response as the base line, the proposed method is scrutinized by analogy with that of a conventional maximum dissipation energy (MED) controller to accentuate the effectiveness of the fuzzy logic algorithm. Results reveal that the fuzzy logic controllers can efficiently improve the structural responses and MR dampers are quite promising for reducing seismic responses during near-fault earthquakes.
It is generally believed that the high energy emissions from isolated pulsars are emitted from relativistic electrons/positrons accelerated in outer magnetospheric accelerators (outergaps) via a curvature radiation mechanism, which has a simple exponential cut-off spectrum. However, many gamma-ray pulsars detected by the Fermi LAT (Large Area Telescope) cannot be fitted by simple exponential cut-off spectrum, and instead a sub-exponential is more appropriate. It is proposed that the realistic outergaps are non-stationary, and that the observed spectrum is a superposition of different stationary states that are controlled by the currents injected from the inner and outer boundaries. The Vela and Geminga pulsars have the largest fluxes among all targets observed, which allows us to carry out very detailed phase-resolved spectral analysis. We have divided the Vela and Geminga pulsars into 19 (the off pulse of Vela was not included) and 33 phase bins, respectively. We find that most phase resolved spectra still cannot be fitted by a simple exponential spectrum: in fact, a sub-exponential spectrum is necessary. We conclude that non-stationary states exist even down to the very fine phase bins.
This paper is given a full detail of mathematical analyses of input current for novel active type power factor correction(PFC) AC-DC converter of step up-down added electric isolation. These are compared with harmonics components of input current for a conventional PFC converter of electric isolation type. The proposed PFC converter is constructed in using a new loss-less snubber circuit to achieve a soft switching of control device. Also the proposed converter for discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement and reduces the size of components. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form of discontinuous pulse in proportion to magnitude of ac input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. Particularly, the stored energy of loss-less snubber capacitor is recovered with input side and increases input current from resonant operation. The result is that input power factor of the proposed converter is higher than that of a conventional PFC converter. Some simulative results on computer and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

In recent years, concern has been raised about the technique of controlling electrical breakdown by using laser in many fields. Especially, laser has attracted much attention in the Electro-Discharge Macining(EDM) because of its many merits. Therefore, this research has been performed to obtain fundamental data relevant to discharge processing by using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The experiments of laser-guided dc discharge by laser radiation have been carried out at low air pressure ranging from 0.2 to 20 torr. The minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage V\ulcorner at the given pressures P and distances D between an anode and a cathode was measured. It is found that the minimum laser-guided dc discharge voltage is much lower than the natural discharge voltage V\ulcorner\ulcorner, and the values of V\ulcorner and V\ulcorner as a function of P.D has a similar tendency. The laser output energy Eout decreases with input pulse duration tp increasing, and the more the value of tp increases, the higher that of V\ulcorner is obtained because the number of photons during the discharge time N decreases with t\ulcorner increasing. There is the time lag frequently when the discharge by laser radiation is misguided under the condition of the applied voltage less than V_G.min.
A high-conversion efficiency, nanosecond pulsed optical parametric generation and amplification with repetition rate of 20 kHz based on a periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate was presented. Pumped by a Q-switched $Nd:YVO_4$ laser at 1064 nm with a pumping power of 4.8W, the generated output power was 1.6W for the signal and idler waves, achieving a slope efficiency of 50%. Using a seed source at signal wave the amplified signal output-pulse energy reached $65{\mu}J$. The obtained maximum gain was 72.4 dB.
This paper presents the temperature control of aluminum plate by using Peltier element. Peltier effect is heat pumping phenomena by electric energy as one of the thermoelectric effect. So if current is charged to Peltier element, it absorbs heat from low temperature side and emits heat to high temperature side. In this experiment, Peltier element is used to control the temperature of small aluminum plate with current control and operating cooling fan only while cooling duration. Operating cooling fan only while cooling duration is proper to get more rapid heating and cooling duration. As a result of experiment, it takes about 100sec period to repeating temperature between $35^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ and about 80sec from $40^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ in ambient air temperature $25^{\circ}C$ and while operating cooling fan only in cooling duration. Future aim is to apply this temperature control method in actuating SMHA(special metal hydride actuator) which is applicable in Siver project acting in low frequency range by using Peltier element for heating and cooling.

Numbers of matrix- and analyte-derived ions and their sum in matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) of a peptide were measured using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) as matrix. As for MALDI with ${\alpha}$-cyano-4-hydroxy cinnamic acid as matrix, the sum was independent of the peptide concentration in the solid sample, or was the same as that of pure DHB. This suggested that the matrix ion was the primary ion and that the peptide ion was generated by matrix-to-peptide proton transfer. Experimental ionization efficiencies of $10^{-5}-10^{-4}$ for peptides and $10^{-8}-10^{-7}$ for matrices are far smaller than $10^{-3}-10^{-1}$ for peptides and $10^{-5}-10^{-3}$ for matrices speculated by Hillenkamp and Karas. Number of gas-phase ions generated by MALDI was unaffected by laser wavelength or pulse energy. This suggests that the main role of photo-absorption in MALDI is not in generating ions via a multi-photon process but in ablating materials in a solid sample to the gas phase.
In this paper, we verify the performance of LDPC coded OFDM/DS system by Monte-Carlo simulation of BER on Eb/No. The simulation results show that LDPC coded OFDM/DS has a strong anti-jamming characteristic over pulse-noise jammer and partial-band noise jammer. The performance of LDPC coded OFDM/DS system is evaluated on both faded waveforms and non-faded waveforms. For non-faded waveforms, high coding gain is attained due to LDPC, even when waveforms have short PN sequence and JSR is only 5dB. Especially, the increase in the repeated number of LDPC decoding enhances coding gain. However, faded waveforms cannot achieve sufficient average effect when PN sequence is short. High coding gain of faded waveforms can be achieved by extending length of PN sequence. In addition, we compare LDPC coded OFDM/DS system with Convolutional coded OFDM/DS system. The simulation results illustrate that when LDPC coded OFDM/DS system with short PN sequence has sufficient average effects, the system shows lower BER than Convolutional coded OFDM/DS system with long PN sequence.

The module UPS can flexibly implement expansion of power system capacities. Further-more, it can be used to build up the parallel redundant system to improve the reliability of power system operation. To realize the module UPS, load sharing without interconnection among parallel connecting modules as well as a small scale and lightweight topology is necessary. In this paper, the three-arm converter/inverter is compared with the general full-bridge and half-bridge topology from a practical point of view and chosen as the module UPS topology. The switching control approaches based on a pulse width modulation of the converter and inverter of the system are presented independently. The frequency and voltage droop method is applied to parallel operation control to achieve load sharing. Two prototype 3㎸A modules are designed and implemented to confirm the effectiveness of the pro-posed approaches. Experimental results show that the three-arm UPS system has a high power factor, a low distortion of output voltage and input current, and good load sharing characteristics.
