  • The botanical antimicrobial agent prepared from citrus fruits (BAAC) was prepared to provide inhibitory ability to packaging paper The BAAC diluted in 0.5% and 1% starch solution respectively was applied to packaging paper by the thin coating technique. The antimicrobial packaging paper displayed great inhibitory effect against the putrefying microbes including fungi, yeast and bacteria. Tn addition to antimicrobial activity of the packaging papers, their physical properties such as tensile strength, burst strength, tear strength and bending stiffness could be improved by simultaneous treatment with starch. Both the item packaging by tissue paper and the outer packaging by corrugated boxes, which were treated by the thin coating of BAAC and starch, exhibited great ability in preserving freshness of stored mandann oranges. The more treatment of BAAC was made in the packaging paper, the greater freshness-preserving ability was generated.

  • This paper describes a technique combining chemometrics with UV spectroscopy for the determination of the concentra tions of two tissue additives (i.e., wet strength and softening agents) in a cellulose fiber containing solution. In single as ent solutions, the concentration of the additive can be measured by UV spectroscopy at the wavelength where the species having absorption. For a binary (i.e., containing two additives) solution system, the spectral characterization is very complicated. However, if aided by a chemometrical calibration technique, each additive in the binary solution can be quantified simultaneously. The present method is very rapid and simple, it can easily perform a continuous measurement in the changes in the additives' concentration after fiber addition, and therefore this becomes a valuable tool for the adsorption kinetics study of chemical additives onto the cellulose fibers. The time-dependent adsorption behaviors of the wet-strength, softening agent, and their both on fiber were also presented.

  • To produce the raw material used for printing and writing paper or high quality tissue, MOWs that were consisted of white ledger, colored ledger and old newspaper were bleached with EoP and EoPY(FAS) method, the EoP bleaching process gave the improvement in brightness and a high color removal efficiency. Especially, MOW B(initial brightness: 59.1% ISO) that contained much old newspaper showed the higher bleaching efficiency than those of MOW A(initial brightness: 68.3%). After EoPY(FAS) bleaching, MOW's brightness was increased from 68.3% ISO to 84.3∼84.0% ISO, and from 59.1% ISO to 78.7∼79.2% ISO, respectively. Also the tensile and burst index of bleached pulps decreased by 10∼30%. The tear index slightly decreased or halted at the same range as unbleached pulps.

  • This study investigated the latest findings and notions regarding 'triple antibiotic paste' (TAP) and its applications in dentistry, particularly endodontics. TAP is a combination of 3 antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and minocycline. Despite the problems and pitfalls research pertaining to this paste has unveiled, it has been vastly used in endodontic treatments. The paste's applications vary, from vital pulp therapy to the recently introduced regeneration and revascularisation protocol. Studies have shown that the paste can eliminate the root canal microorganisms and prepare an appropriate matrix for further treatments. This combination is able to remove diverse groups of obligate and facultative gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, providing an environment for healing. In regeneration protocol cases, this allows the development, disinfection, and possible sterilization of the root canal system, so that new tissue can infiltrate and grow into the radicular area. Moreover, TAP is capable of creating a discipline in which other wanted and needed treatments can be successfully performed. In conclusion, TAP, as an antibacterial intracanal medication, has diverse uses. Nevertheless, despite its positive effects, the paste has shown drawbacks. Further research concerning the combined paste and other intracanal medications to control microbiota is a must.

  • Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from an infolding of the enamel organ into the dental papilla prior to calcification of the dental tissue. Clinical and radiographic presentation of dens invaginatus shows a lot of variation. The classification proposed by Oehlers(1957) is most commonly used among classifications of dens invaginatus. Several treatments have been suggested to treat Type III dens invaginatus where the pulp remains healthy but the invagination is associated with a periodontitis. The top priority objective is to preserve pulp as sound as possible. Thus, if there is no definite evidence of pulpal disease, the conservative access which treat invagination as distinct from the pulp is necessary. But, Endodontic treatment of Type III dens invaginatus has the particular problems associated with achieving adequate chemomechanical debridement of the root canal system and invagination, predictable length control and consistent filling. In this case report, the endodontic treatment limited within invagination was performed for treatment of Type III dens invaginatus, and filling with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate(MTA) resulted in good prognosis.

  • The object of this paper was to investigate the histopatological changes on dog's pulp under cavitation by irradiation of the $CO_2$ laser. The subjects were derived from four dogs, and irradiated 113.23 J/$mm^2$, 283.09 J/$mm^2$, 566.08 J/$mm^2$ in Group I, II, and III respectively. The dogs were sacrificed immediately, 24 hour, 72 hour and 1 week after $CO_2$ laser treatment. For light microscopic examination, routine H-E and PAS stains were employed. For electron microscopic observation, the teeth were fixed in 1% paraformaldehyde and 1% glutaraldehyde, decalcified teeth in 10% EDTA were stained by uranyl acetate and lead citrate. The observation was made with a Hitachi H-500 model electron microscope. The following results were obtained in this study: 1. At the early stage of the experimental sub-groups-immediately, 24 hour, 72 hour samples of Group I, II and III-coagulation necrosis and hyperemia were observed in odontoblastic and subodontoblastic pulpal layer. 2. At the 1 week sub-group of Group I, II, regenerative hyperplasia of the odontoblasts without coagulation necrosis were revealed, in addition to thickened predentin. On he other hand coagulation necrosis and atrophic change accompanying with hyperplasia were found at the 1 week sub-group of Group III. 3. Ultrastructurally, the odontoblasts appeared nuclear degeneration, vacuolar change of cytoplasmic organelles and rupture of plasma membrane at the early stage of the experimental period of all groups. 4. Under spectrohelioscopic examination, regenerative odontobalsts were seen at the 1 week specimens of Group I, II and III. 5. The pulpal response occured at 113-566 J/$mm^2$. The pathologic change of pulp tissue occured at the early experimental period but regeneration of odontoblasts could be seen after 1 week.

  • This study done to investigate the hypocholesterolemic effect of ow dietary fiber in a high cholesterol diet in aspect of cholesterol absorption and excretion using Sprague Dawley rats. After feeding diets containing 0.5% cholesterol and 5% tangerine pulp, sea tangle or prickly pear cactus for four weeks, we measured the levels of plasma and liver cholesterol and triglyceride, fecal neutral sterols and fecal radioactivity after ingestion 14(sup)C-cholesterol. We also examined platelet aggregation and histological change in liver tissues in association of hypercholesterolemia. The liver to body weight ratio was significantly(p<0.01) lower in rats fed prickly pear cactus than in other groups. The levels of plasma total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were decreased significantly(p<0.01) in the prickly pear cactus group compared with the control, while there was no difference in the liver levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride among groups. Fecal corprostanol and cholesterol were significantly(p<0.01) higher groups of control and prickly pear cactus compared to the other two groups. Radioisotope excretion after ingestion of 14(sup)C-cholesterol was higher in the control group than in tangerine pulp group or sea tangle group, with the highest in prickly pear group. Radioisotope excretion was the highest during the 2nd and 3rd days in all groups. Hematocrit and platelet aggregation were decreased in all fiber groups compared to the control, but not statistically different. Microscopic examination showed that cholesterol diet cause a fat accumulation in the liver and prickly pear cactus decreased the fat accumulation. Result indicates that prickly pear cactus has hypocholesterolemic effect by decreasing absorption and increasing excretion of cholesterol, thereby protective effect on fatty liver. Control group fed diet containing high cholesterol and low fiber seems to have a self control system in cholesterol absorption and excretion preventing hypercholesterolemia. • PURPOSE. To evaluate the cytotoxicity of temporary luting cements on bovine dental pulp-derived cells (bDPCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four different temporary cements were tested: Rely X Temp E (3M ESPE), Ultratemp (Ultradent), GC Fuji Temp (GC), and Rely X Temp NE (3M ESPE). The materials were prepared as discs and incubated in Dulbecco's modified eagle's culture medium (DMEM) for 72 hours according to ISO 10993-5. A real-time cell analyzer was used to determine cell vitality. After seeding $200{\mu}L$ of the cell suspensions into the wells of a 96-well plate, the bDPCs were cured with bioactive components released by the test materials and observed every 15 minutes for 98 hours. One-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer tests were used to analyze the results of the proliferation experiments. RESULTS. All tested temporary cements showed significant decreases in the bDPCs index. Rely X Temp E, GC Fuji Temp, and Rely X Temp NE were severely toxic at both time points (24 and 72 hours) (P<.001). When the cells were exposed to media by Ultratemp, the cell viability was similar to that of the control at 24 hours (P>.05); however, the cell viability was significantly reduced at 72 hours (P<.001). Light and scanning electron microscopy examination confirmed these results. CONCLUSION. The cytotoxic effects of temporary cements on pulpal tissue should be evaluated when choosing cement for luting provisional restorations.

  • In case of luxation injuries, loss of tooth vitality is common. And in case of trauma in the immature permanent teeth, precise diagnosis of pulp necrosis is very difficult. That is because limitation in distinguishing between normal dental papilla in immature permanent teeth, transient apical breakdown(TAB), which is part of normal healing process, and apical radiolucency in pulp necrosis. Especially in non-vital immature permanent tooth, the treatment is complex and requires long time. This clinical case report shows that severely infected immature teeth with periradicular periodontitis can undergo healing and apexogenesis or maturogenesis with no definative treatment or after conservative treatment. In the cases reported, we emphasize the considerable power of regeneration of the tooth, probably due to its large number of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells in the dental papilla, pulp tissue, periodontal ligament tissues. Thus, when endodontic treatment in immature permanent teeth, over instrumentation is not recommend for preserve the apical vital stem cells.

  • In the root fracture, pulp necrosis tends to involve only the coronal fragment, while the pulp in the apical fragment remains vital. The prognosis of endodontic treatment of the apical fragment is poor due to the possibility of overfilling of the space between the fragments and difficulty in removing necrotic tissue. In the present cases, endodontic treatment of the apical fragment of root fracture was performed. However, in reendodontic treatment, resistance was felt at the fracture site and access to the root canal in the apical fragment was difficult. Therefore, the calcium hydroxide was periodically exchanged only in the coronal fragment without further treatment in the apical fragment and the canal of the coronal fragment was finally filled with Gutta-percha. Regular observation revealed no radiologic complications in the apical fragment. In some cases, we can observe good healing pattern such as absorption of calcium hydroxide and pulp canal obliteration of apical fragment in the long term.
