  • Inter-fiber bonding is improved by refining resulting in higher Young's modulus. This effect is consistent to the changes of FTIR absorption intensities associated with the hydroxyl groups in the pulp samples. A PLS model, which is established to correlate the FTIR spectral data with the Young's modulus of the pulp samples for predicting the elastic Young's modulus of paper, is statistically robust.

  • The aim of this article is to review the general property of the famous traditional Korean paper, "rice straw paper"(Bast-Fiber mixed with straw pulp), and to compare the paper qualities varying with the composition ratio of straw pulp, in order to revive the traditional paper in modem Korea. The experiment was carried out by making first the two different mixture papers, i. e., one is the paper of 50% bast fiber mixed with 50% straw pulp, and the other is the paper of 75% bast fiber with 25% oats straw pulp, and finally the 100% bast fiber paper was made for the purpose of comparison. The qualitative properties of these three kinds of paper with the different mixing ratio of the straw pulp were evaluated, and the findings of the experiment can be summarized as follow: 1. As to the quality aspects of the paper strength like tensile strength, breaking length, elongation, and tear strength, the test proved the 100% bast fiber paper as best, and the 50% mixed paper as the next good one. 2. In aspect of the printing adaptability such as density, opacity, brightness, whiteness, lab colors, air permeability, and roughness, the 50% mixed paper proved to be the best, due to the short cells in the straw pulp. 3. As to the air permeability, the larger ratio of straw pulp was found to be the lesser, and 75% bast fiber with 25% straw pulp mixture paper and the 100% bast fiber one were found 1/5 degree efficient. 4. In terms of the water absorption degree, 100% bast fiber paper was the fastest, but in case of mixture paper, 50% mixed one was a little faster up to the point of 1cm, while the two kinds of mixed ones appear to be almost similar to each other beyond the point. 5. The straw pulp mixed paper, especially the 50% mixed one was evaluated as the highest by the calligraphers who had experienced using the papers in terms of movement and feeling of the caligraphy and painting. In addition, although the 25% mixed paper is judged to be good for book printing because of the strength, the 50% mixed paper can be thought to be more desirable for painting and calligraphy. In conclusion, we will be able to make the quality paper with durability, by mixing the straw pulp with the bast fiber in proper ratio, following the tradition of Korean paper making.

  • Soda-AQ pulp made from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and oil palm trunk (OPT) were bleached in element chlorine free (ECF) sequence. Bleached SCB and OPT pulp was achieve higher brightness than 85.0% ISO. Viscosity of SCB bleached pulp and OPT bleached pulp were achieved 18-27 cPs and 18-26 cPs. In 7.8% active chlorine dioxide addition, bleached SCB pulp was shown 88.7% ISO brightness and 20.4 cPs viscosity. And bleached OPT pulp was shown 88.5% ISO brightness and 18.8 cPs viscosity with 7.8% active chlorine dioxide addition.

  • Corn stalk is the lignocellulosic biomass, which remain as leftover after harvesting. To use the corn stalk as raw material for paper industry, soda pulping was applied. In chemical compositional analysis, extractive contents of corn stalk (45.1%) was higher than hardwood. With corn stalk pith, soda pulp yield was 25.3% at 10.6 Kappa number, but 39.5% yield with 14.8 Kappa number for corn stalk rind. Higher extractives content in pith is one of the reason for lower pulp yield than rind. Pith pulp fibers had higher fines content than rind pulp. Pith parenchyma cell was removed as fines during pulping or washing process, which caused the lower yield. To use the corn stalks as a raw material for paper making, de-pith process is essential for higher pulp yield and longer pulp length.

  • Crude enzymes of Trichoderma viride and Phanerochaete chrysosporium were evaluated for their effect to brightness and physical properties of recycled pulp from newspaper and corrugated container board. The brightness of recycled pulp from newspaper increased with crude enzymes from Trichoderma viride and Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The brightness of recycled pulp of corrugated container board increased with crude enzyme from Phanerochaete chrysosporium, but decreased with crude enzyme from Trichoderma viride. The Δbrightness with chemical bleaching of crude enzyme treated pulp was lower than that of heat killed enzyme treated pulp, but the final brightness of pulp was increased. Modification of recycled paper with crude enzymes can result in a substantial increase in physical properties with little no loss in pulp freeness.

  • The reinforcement of wheat straw pulp sheets with softwood kraft was studied, with special emphasis on the impact of softwood kraft beating and the proportion softwood kraft in straw pulp. the reinforcement was evaluated by measuring the tensile stiffness sand in-plane fracture behavior of samples. the results were compared with a mechanical pulp (TMP) and with a hardwood birch kraft, both reinforced with the same softwood kraft. Wheat straw pulp forms strong interfiber bonds. Therefore, its tensile stiffness and tensile strength are larger than TMP used. In-plane tear tests showed that a pure wheat straw pulp sheet has low fracture energy and correspondingly a narrow fracture process zone. The fracture energy of the reinforced straw sheets was found to increase linearly with the proportion of both unbeaten and beaten softwood pulps.

  • The delignification, and optical and strength properties were determined to compare the ozone treatment effect in hardwood and softwood CTMPs. During ozone treatment, the delignificantion was much higher in hardwood pulp than in softwood pulp . The optical and strength properties which were very dependent upon the lignin content in pulp were significantly improved in the case of hardwood pulp . The ozone treatment of high yield pulp was more effective in hardwood pulp than that of softwood pulp.

  • In this paper, the possibility of statistical modeling from the pulp and peroxide bleaching condition variables to predict optical properties of a bleached chemimechanical pulp used in a newsprint paper machine at Mazandaran Wood and Paper Industries Company (MWPI) was studied. Due to the variations in the opacity and the brightness of the bleached pulp at MWPI and to tackle this problem, it was decided to study the possibility of modeling the bleaching process. To achieve this purpose, Multi-variate Regression Analysis was used for model building and it was found that there is a relationship between independent variables and pulp brightness as well as pulp opacity, consequently, two models were constructed. Then, model validation was carried out using new data set in the bleaching plant at MWPI to test model predictive ability and its performance.

  • This paper deals the effect of anthraquinone (AQ) on the contribution of sulphidity in kraft pulping of sapwood. The pulping conditions namely- active alkali concentration, pulpingtime, temperature and liquor ratio were varied in low ($15\%$) and high ($30\%$) sulphidity. $0.1\%$ AQ was added in the low and high sulphidity pulping with varying active alkali concentration and cooking time. At optimum conditions, low sulphidity kraft process produced about $44\%$ pulp yield with kappa number of about 23. But in high sulphidity kraft process kappa number was reduced to about 20 at the same yield. An addition of AQ reduced alkali requirement by $2\%$ on oven dried raw material and cooking time by 1 hour to produce pulp yield of about $44\%$ at kappa number 20. AQ is more effective in low sulphidity pulping than the high sulphidity pulping. The breaking length of kraft-AQ pulp was slightly higher than that of kraft pulp.
