  • There are growing public concerns over crop and food safeties due to the elevated levels of heavy metals grown in contaminated soil. Heavy metals are classified as the chemical harmful risks for crop and food safety. With implementation of GAP, crop safety is controlled by many regulatory options for soil, irrigation water and fertilizers. Any attempt to retard the metal uptake by crops may be the best protocol to secure crop and food safety. This article reviews the management strategies for heavy metals in view of crop safety in Korea and demonstrates results from the field experiments to retard metal translocation from soil to crops by using chemical amendments and soil layer management methods. Major source of soil pollution by heavy metals has been related with mining activities. Risk assessment revealed that rice consumption and groundwater ingestion in the abandoned mining areas were the major exposure pathways for metals to human and the heavy metal showed the toxic effects on human health. Chemical amendments such as lime and slag retarded Cd uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.) by increasing soil pH, lowering the phytoavailable Cd concentration in soil solution, immobilizing Cd in soil and converting the available Cd fractions into non-available fractions. The soil layer management methods decreased the Cd uptake by 76% and Pb by 60%. Either reversing the surface layer with subsurface layer or immobilization of metals with layer mixing with lime was considered to be the practical option for the in-situ remediation of the contaminated paddy soils. Combination of chemical soil amendments and layer management methods was efficient to retard the metal bioavailability and thus to secure crop safety for heavy metals. This protocol seems to be cheap, relatively easy to practice and practical in the agricultural fields. However, a long term monitoring work should be followed to verify the efficiency of this protocol.

  • Alzheimer's disease(AD) is a geriatric dementia that is widespread in old age. In the future AD will be the largest problem in public health service. From old times, Much medicines have been used for treatment of dementia, but there is no medicine having obvious effect. AD is one of brain retrogression disease. So We studied on herbal medicine that have a relation of brain retrogression. From old times, In Oriental Medicine, Rhizoma Acori Graminei has been used for disease in relation to brain retrogression. We studied on the effects of anti-Alzheimer in pCT105-induced neuroblastoma cell lines by Rhizoma Acori Graminei extract As the result of this study, In RAG group, the apoptosis in the nervous system is inhibited, the repair against the degerneration of Neuroblastoma cells by CT105 expression is promoted. These results indicate that RAG possess strong inhibitory effect of apoptosis in the nervous system and repair effect against the degeneration of Neuroblastoma cells by CT105 expression.

  • As of 2007, there are 2,499 groundwater quality monitoring stations in total in Korea. Among them,478 are operated by the MOCT (Ministry of Construction and Transportation) for the National Groundwater Network Program, 781 wells by the ME (Ministry of Environment) for monitoring of the area where imminent contamination is expected, and 1240 wells by the local governments for monitoring of other areas. Even though, water quality data obtained from those wells are being provided to the public since 1999, the information for the wells has not been appropriately informed. In this study, we assessed the wells that are being used for the national groundwater quality monitoring from the points of operation, location, and well configuration to provide suggestions for the improvement of the national groundwater quality monitoring.

  • To investigate the effects of a single bacterium and a mixture of bacteria as probiotics in loperamide-treated animal models, loperamide (3 mg/kg) was administered to SD rats to induce constipation. The individual lactic acid bacterial doses, Enterococcus faecium (EF), Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA), Streptococcus thermophilus (ST), Bifidobacterium bifidum (BB), Bifidobacterium lactis (BL), Pediococcus pentosaceus (PP), and a mixture of the bacteria were orally administered to loperamide-induced constipated rats at a concentration of $10^8CFU/kg$ for 14 days. The weights and water contents of their stools were found to be significantly higher in PP, CKDB (mixture of 5 strains except PP), and CKDBP (CKDB+PP) groups than in the normal (constipation not induced) and the control (constipation-induced) groups (p<0.05). The intestinal transit ratio was significantly higher in all probiotic-treated groups than in the control group, and was the highest in the CKDBP group (p<0.05). The mucosal length and mucus secretion were significantly improved in all probiotic-treated-groups, as compared to that in the control group, and the CKDBP group was found to be the most effective according to immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and total short chain fatty acid content analysis (p<0.05). Lastly, PP, CKDB, and CKDBP showed relatively higher Lactobacillus sp. ratios of 61.94%, 60.31% and 51.94%, respectively, compared to the other groups, based on metagenomic analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the antidotal effects of thiamine in phenylmercury poisoning rats. Sixty-six rats were divided into six groups the control group, the $40{\gamma}$ thiamine-only-dosed group, the 6 ppm phenylmercury-only-dosed group, the simultaneously-dosed-group with 6 ppm mercury & $20{\gamma}$ thiamine, and with 6 ppm mercury & $40{\gamma}$ thiamine, and with 6 ppm mercury & $80{\gamma}$ thiamine. The thiamine was put into pellet by various concentrations, and phenylmercury was mixed in drinking water by 6 ppm concentration. The rats were sacrificed for observing the histopathological changes of brain, liver and kidney. The remits summarized are as follows 1. In the group dosed with only $40{\gamma}$ thiamine, the tissues of brain, liver and kidney did not show any abnormal architecture. 2. The phenyhnercury-only-dosed group and the simultaneoulsy-dosed group with mercury and $20{\gamma}$ thiamine showed remarkable degenerative or necrotic hepatic cells. In addition, a remarkable swelling and necrosis on epithelium of proximal tubules in kidney were found. 3. The simultaneously-dosed group with mercury and $40{\gamma}$ thiamine showed moderate degeneration and necrosis of Purkinje cells in cerebellum. A moderate necrosis and swelling on epithelium of proximal tubules and a large amount of tubular casts were found as well. 4. The simultaneously-dosed group with mercury and $80{\gamma}$ thiamine showed a slight degenerative change of Purkinje cells. A slight degenerative change on epithelium of proximal tubules and a small amount of tubular casts were also found.

  • To ameliorate a long-standing, persistent housing shortage in Korea, large-scale massive housing production has been an imperative, and the extensive growth highly values development and consumption. The state's priority for the quantitative growth of housing stock has proved to be successful, but the state faces with economic and environmental crises in a global era. To achieve the qualitative growth, the previous administration pronounced a green growth policy from the inception, and a series of strategic measures under a holistic plan have been taken widely and vigorously. As part of the strategies, the green home project was undertaken, and simultaneously the movement of green living led by the governance has been activated. However, little attention to the grassroots effort was paid and the efficacy hasn't been adequately addressed. This study examines the factors affecting green living of residents in multifamily housing. Based on public guidelines to green living, 106 specific items were drawn out and largely categorized into 6 areas (water, waste, transportation, air quality, consumption, and energy), and the questionnaire was constructed using them. Of 750 survey forms mailed out, 161 responses were returned and the collected data were used for statistical analysis. The findings indicated that varying degrees of green living was well practiced, the state-led green home project was relatively well recognized, and the green growth policy was strongly supported. Also the respondents' attitude toward green living were more associated with demographic variables than housing characteristics, and familiarity with green home project was related to attitudes toward green living. Since the on-going approach to green living has focused on simple and economical ways, it has proved to be effective but progressive strategies to make living greener are necessarily developed.

  • This research has been made through analyzing clothes of human dresses and ornaments appeared in the Buddhist pictures which were drawn at the times of the koryo Dynasty. Clothes of the Korea Dynasty could be analyzed as below : First, as for Turban (Doogun), common people used Ogun, Doogun, Byunsangmo and Chaek. For clothes, the style of the era of the ear of the Three-Dynasty. That is , they wore long shirts with narrow sleeves and narrow trousers and skirts. However, around the years of 1320, shirts had no more belt but became to show a kind of ribbon which is called as Gorum , and length of shirts was a bit shortened between hip and waist lines. Second, as for officials clothes, a kind of Rhangkan was used through the Dynasty but after the years of 1300, Wonryukwan was also used. In the clothes, Bangshimkikryung was used and the royals wore full-dress attire which looks like a long gown. Under the full-dress , we can see two different which seems to be a kind of present under-water. Third, in public clothes, same type of Danryung. Holl, belt and shoes were used throughout the Korea Dynasty. In addition Line (Yeon) was remarkably used skirt was dressed under Danryung by middle of the Dynasty the skirt was replaced with trousers. For Bokdoo, Jeonkak bokdoo was mostly used at the beginning of the Dynasty , but in the end of the Dynaty a lowr-flap bokdoo was in the main current. Meanwhile , we can see that the Korea Dynasty had its own in dependence in the clothes although the Dynasty was much affected by the Chines Song Dynasty System. We can hardly find a Mogrian cloethes style in the Korea-Dynasty clothes. Fourth, in Queen's clothes, banbi and pyo were used and sleeves were decorated with birds feather throughout the Dynasty. Lastly , famer's clothes are quite similar to those of the Chinese Song and won Dynasties and a decorative line was used in official clothes. These facts make us have a presumption of our Dongii culture might be conveyed to the Chinese in the ancient times but much more research is needed to clarify.

  • This study aims to explore a set of indicators to be used for purification management. by estimating the total quantity of depositied waste in coastal waters, Through 3 rounds of Delphi technique, this study sorts out the following 5 variables to be used as major indicators determining priorities for purification in coastal areas: the ratio of re-deposition after collection, the area where fishing gear are lost, the total quantity of depositied waste of each coastal water, the total quantity of deposited waste in the past, and the quantity of depositied waste by unit area. Although the fact that the delphi surveys were done only on 27 specialists limits its external validity, this study will serve as a base for in-depth studies with more expanded panels that will provide better indicators for purification management in coastal waters of Korea.

  • During a study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea in 2016, a total of 42 actinobacterial isolates were recovered from various environmental samples collected from natural cave, squid, sewage, sea water, trees, droppings of birds, freshwater, eelgrass, mud flat, sediment and soil. On the basis of a tight phylogenetic clade with the closest species and high level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, it was shown that each isolate was assigned to independent and previously described bacterial species which were assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria. The following 42 species have not been reported in Korea: eight species in two genera n the order Corynebacteriales, 26 species of 16 genera in the Micrococcales, one species of one genus in the Micromonosporales, one species of one genus in the Propionibacteriales, four species of two genera in the Streptomycetales and two species of two genera in the Streptosporangiale. Cell morphology, Gram staining reaction, colony colors and features, the media and conditions of incubation, physiological and biochemical characteristics, origins of isolation and strain IDs of 42 unrecorded actinobacterial species are presented in the species description.
