  • The purpose of this study is to analyze performance factors of the school and community libraries in its beginning, growth, development, and expansion to identify the assignment of the movement at the present stage. In this study, we performed interviews with those concerned with the school community and library movement and collected various relevant literature. The school and community libraries movement can be divided into five stages including beginning, growth, development, expansion, and turning point. Therefore performance and significance of school and community libraries shown in the history of the movement may be summarized as follows. First, school and community libraries were established mainly in areas isolated from cultural benefits, contributing to resolving problems such as a lack of public libraries and concentration of small libraries in certain areas. Second, the movement promoted the operation of school libraries by providing books for small-sized elementary schools in farming & fishing villages and mountain villages, libraries that were insufficient in books. Third, the movement utilized the minimal personnel, books, and spaces of school libraries to provide library services to community residents, securing permanence of library services, if nothing else. Fourth, school and community libraries played the role of local community-based libraries, intensifying the community spirit of residents and vitalizing communities.

  • As the number of Instagram users continues to grow, an increasing number of public libraries are establishing and maintaining accounts on the Instagram platform. The objective of this study is to classify and analyze the content of Instagram posts from 14 public libraries that are actively engaged on the platform. A classification of post types, divided into seven large, 16 medium, and 76 small categories, was employed to analyze the content of posts on each library's Instagram account from the account's inception to the end of December 2023. The analysis revealed that library posts focused on a few items, including book recommendations, library introductions and news, and event announcements of literary and arts programs. Program event announcements and reviews, book recommendations and reading programs were found to be highly correlated with user engagement and teen reading programs. Based on these findings, it is recommended that future Instagram posts should be more user-centered and interactive, and that libraries should actively promote their events on Instagram and other social media platforms.

  • In this study, we investigate the usefulness of the measures of the 2008 Korean Public Library Operation Assessment as perceived by librarians in practice using a survey. The survey was answered by librarians in large, medium, and small-sized libraries managed by local autonomous bodies and in large-sized libraries that belong to local education authorities. The survey results show that whereas the usefulness of items was higher in planning area and those items that can be easily counted, and usefulness of items in human resources and facilities was lower. There are no significant results in differences by library size and by the characteristics of librarians. Based on the results, we suggest a direction for the improvement of the Korean Public Library Operation Assessment.

  • This study was implemented to verify the validity and effectiveness of the current evaluation indicators by analyzing the content and result of the current survey for evaluating a small library, based on the achievement rate of each index. To this end, questions, included in evaluation indices for the small library were reviewed, and survey data from a total of 19,476 libraries during the past 3 years from 2018 to 2020 were investigated to analyze the evaluation scores, differences and achievement rates of each item. It was proposed to delete or add some indicators of the current evaluation category, and to raise supplementally the need for qualitative assesment. Based on the research results, the following implications are suggested. First of all, the evaluation of small libraries should focus on the quality of the services they provide rather than the library environment. Second, demonstrable systematic indicators should be designed and then clearly explained to resolve the ambiguity of the terms used. Third, for better analysis, it is necessary to distinguish evaluation items between public and private small libraries and the assessment process should be done by the local government. Lastly, qualitative evaluation items that can measure users' satisfaction should be added.

The data used in this study is based on the survey data of public housing panel survey in Seoul (2016). The study method used ordered logistic regression analysis based on the fact that dependent variables appeared as ordered responses. Major research results are as follows. Firstly, housing performance and residential satisfaction may not match. Even though the satisfaction of housing area, type, and management fee is high, satisfaction with residential environment is low if commuting distance, the number of small libraries, and hospitals are small. Secondly, it showed different characteristics of residential environment factors among types of public housing. Rather than focusing on supply, customized supply is needed considering characteristics of public housing types. Thirdly, the policy for public housing needs to be realized by a fair policy on the residential environment. It is necessary to contribute to better housing stability as a customized policy considering the local residential environment.

  • As a society rapidly advances in technology and industry, various demands for information arc increasing and becoming more specialized than every before. The college library can no longer restrict its service to the people or, the campus alone. There is no fundamental change in its place on a college campus, but it has an additional role to play: to meet the demands for information from the community outside of the campus. Thyre is no denying that there are public libraries meant to serve the comnlunity and some small spacialized libraries to support certain institutions. But it is also well known that these libraries are inadequate to satisfy the demands for information in a highly diversified and specialized soceity of today largely due to lack of facilities, funds. and personnel. Under these circdmstances, it is almost imperative that the college library open its door to the community. It was attempted in the article to point out the nccds of cooperation between the college library and the community for economic and intellectual advancement on thc campus and in the community. Various ways of making the college library available to the community werc also discussed.

  • Currently, collections with public libraries are evaluated only on the basis of simple data, such as the use volume of collections with individual libraries, and interlibrary lending (ILL) results. To promote the ILL of regional libraries and raise the use of collections, however, the evaluation of collections should be expanded from individual libraries to regional libraries. This study aims to propose user-oriented methods for evaluating the library collections within a regional library system by using four kinds of data: collection, acquisition, circulation, and ILL application data. The results of this study show that the proposed method can reveal the positions of each library within a regional library system, and also the characteristics of a library's collections and users' needs more precisely.
