  • National Union Catalog presupposes an information infrastructure which permits users to identify and locate materials of all the domestic libraries and to share materials among libraries. Recently, there have been developed national union catalog projects in many countries using Z39.50 protocol implementation. In Korea, multi-union catalogs based on the types of libraries, i.e., public, academic, and special libraries, have been constructed separately. The virtual national union catalog which is a decentralized electronically accessible catalog unified by linking the databases of several institutions using Z39.50 is preferable to a union catalog implemented by a single centralized database. In this paper, hybrid union catalog is suggested with mixtures of centralized union catalogs and Z39.50-based distributed search systems for the development of a national union catalog. It is also suggested that the roles of a national library and centers for union catalog, and relationships between two types of institution for making sound ground for implementing the virtual Korean union catalog.

  • The purpose of this research is to document the current state of 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign (Hereafter called 'One Book' reading campaign), launched in 2003 in Korea, and the characteristics of the selected books. For this research, the homepages, news and reports of a total of 1,170 public libraries and their local government, and several major institutions and organizations related to reading and culture were analyzed with the research method of content analysis and literature review. Also, online catalogs of the National Library of Korea and the National Library for Children and Young Adults were examined to identify the characteristics of 729 titles and 1,179 volumes of books selected in 57 'One Book' programs, as of 2021. The analysis of 57 'One Book' programs and those selected books shows the selection of more than one books in different age groups in more and more 'One Book' programs, lack of consistency in themes of those selected books, and preference for young adult books, new publications and bestselling novels. This trend has weakened individual 'One Book' programs' concentration on one book or one subject, but helped invite a diverse group of people with various interests. More in-depth analysis and explanation of the process of book selection and its appropriateness with the stated goals of 'One Book' programs are needed.

  • This study attempts at the engraving place of wood-printing plates held in the Haein Temple(해인사), which were famous for playing the significant role in the understanding of publishing activities of both the Koryo and Choson Dynasty. Following the common way the bibliographic elements of the books were analyzed namely according to the publication place and the publisher. The findings derived from the analysis are summarized as follows; In the Haeinsa the wood-printing plates books are preserved moved from 17 temples such as Bongso-Sa(봉서사), Hago-Sa(하고사), Soksuam(석수암), Inhung-Sa(인흥사), Wonkwang-Sa(월광사), Sinha-Sa(신하사), Gunsyaeng-Sa(군생사), Jangsu-Sa(장수사), Yongtong-Sa(영통사), Wonjok-Sa(원적사), Unjin(은진) SSanggye-Sa(쌍계사), Songsan(성산) SSanggye-Sa(쌍계사), Hungyul-Sa(흥률사), Jongwon-Sa(정원사), Yon-Sa(연사), Gamro-Sa(감로사), Yongguam(영귀암) besides the publications of temples, there are publications of local branches of gangyengdogam(간경도감) such as Jinju(진주), Sangju(진주), Sangju(상주), Andong(안동), of local public agencies such as Gaelimbu(계림부), Dalsunggwan(달성관), and of private families of which 8 titles in the Koryo Dynasty and 13 titles of the Choson Dynasty. Among the "SSanggyae-Sa(쌍계사) publication" held in the Haeinsa, 9 titles including Chimungyonghun(치문경훈) are recklesaly preserved with dividing both in Gap temple(갑사) and in Haeinsa as the same publication. It is possible that other scattered present publications or remaining publications might have been remaining publication from those partly burnt ones of the complete publications. By means of the investigation on the catalogs of publications, 5 titles such as <> <> <> <> <> which are now kept in the Haeinsa moved from the Taegubu(대구부) or Yongyon-Sa(용연사) were newly identified.

  • The lack of an understanding of the characteristics and searching abilities of a specific user group in computer-based information systems in libraries hinders library and information science professionals in making the best decisions when designing, acquiring, and managing information systems. The objective of this study was to provide information on the characteristics and searching abilities of specific groups such as Korean college students & ones who study abroad, male & female, undergraduate & graduate students, etc. This study also has focused on the methods of loaming to use OPACs and non-user study. Questionnaire was administered to both Korean college students in the city of Taegu, Korea and students who study abroad in the state of Texas, US.A. 345 usable questionnaires were obtained and analyzed. These were analyzed using descriptive, inferential statistics, multiple correlation, and SPSS software. The. major findings of this study are: (1) There was a significant difference among specific student user groups except undergraduate and artiste-athlete students in the distribution of their knowledge about how to use OPACs: (2) There was a significant difference among specific groups in the means of their knowledge: (3) There was no significant difference among un. groups in the distribution of loaming method to use OPAC systems : (4) The correlation between the number of searching methods that the respondents knew in using OPACS and the amount of using computers (0.6635) is comparatively higher than my other correlation to the searching methods. Also, years of experience using computers, frequencies of computer use, and frequencies of OPAC use are comparatively higher than frequencies of library use and frequencies of manual card catalog un: (5) Frequencies of manual card catalog use have low negative correlations with the number of searching methods that the respondents knew in using OPACs: (6) Frequencies of manual card catalog use have little if any negative negative with OPAC and computer use. Conclusions are drawn from the findings in this paper, and recommendations an proposed when designing, adopting, or managing a new system. Topics fur future studies on the characteristics of OPAC systems and their use are also suggested.

  • This paper is to grasp the current trends of national bibliographies through analyzing representative national bibliographies using literature review, analysis of national bibliographies' web pages and survey. First, in order to conform to the definition of a national bibliography as a record of a national publication, it attempts to include a variety of materials from print to electronic resources, but in reality it cannot contain all the materials, so there are exceptions. It is impossible to create a general selection guide for national bibliography coverage, and a plan that reflects the national characteristics and prepares a valid and comprehensive coverage based on analysis is needed. Second, cooperation with publishers and libraries is being made to efficiently generate national bibliography. For the efficiency of national bibliography generation, changes should be sought such as the standardization and consistency, the collection level metadata description for digital resources, and the creation of national bibliography using linked data. Third, national bibliography is published through the national bibliographic online search system, linked data search, MARC download using PDF, OAI-PMH, SRU, Z39.50, and mass download in RDF/XML format, and is integrated with the online public access catalog or also built separately. Above all, national bibliographies and online public access catalogs need to be built in a way of data reuse through an integrated library system. Fourth, as a differentiated function for national bibliography, various services such as user tagging and national bibliographic statistics are provided along with various browsing functions. In addition, services of analysis of national bibliographic big data, links to electronic publications, and mass download of linked data should be provided, and it is necessary to identify users' needs and provide open services that reflect them in order to develop differentiated services. Through the current trends and considerations of the national bibliographies analyzed in this study, it will be possible to explore changes in national and international national bibliography.
