The results from 22 church libraries are investigated in terms of some factors such as material organization, quantity of materials, facilities, staffs, budgets, public services, users and classification systems. Current libraries are very small in its facility, quantity of the materials and the budget, and lack of the full-time librarian. Recently, children's libraries are established among small churches, and their budgets and public services are stable. Although storytelling programs for preschoolers have been in high increase in Korea, the programs currently operating in Korean public libraries have not been well received by the public because of the lack of understanding of the Public and unsystematic operation of the program. The purpose of this study is to draw out effective ways to reform the storytelling programs for Preschoolers of Korean Public libraries through comparativeanalysis with those of American public libraries. Analytical approaches were discussed with the four essential elements for storytelling program : program, children's librarian, preschooler, and library environment.

  • The purpose of the study is to suggest a conceptual framework for the vacation reading programs in promoting children's love of reading in public libraries. Within the conceptual framework of free voluntary reading (FVR), the study identified the concept of reading that public libraries should pursue in developing children's reading programs and analyzed current vacation reading programs that four public libraries in Seoul held during winter and summer vacations of 2013. More specifically, the study analyzed (1) their purposes, (2) durations, targeted children groups, the number of children users, (3) their instructors, (4) the content design of the programs, (5) selected books, and (6) completion certificates and rewards for participation. Lastly, the study discussed whether the programs satisfied the characteristics for promoting free voluntary reading and played the roles for vacation reading programs in public libraries. The results of the study suggest the need for shifting the current vacation reading programs to be more inclusive, so that more children can develop to learn love of reading.

  • This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.

  • This study is intended to check economic value of and factors influencing children's library. To this end, data on a total of 614 questionnaires to which parents among users of 6 children's libraries responded were collected. The results of analysis by contingent valuation method after selecting library fee per person as payment vehicle were as follows. First, willingness to pay was estimated to be a monthly average of KRW 9,243 per person. Second, it was shown that factors influencing willingness to pay included the frequency of utilization, satisfaction, the number of children per family, gender, age, and income and so on. Third, with regard to influence according to each factor, an additional unit in all the rest of factors except gender increased probability of willingness to pay such as the frequency of utilization(1.140), satisfaction(1.335), the number of children per family(1.417), age(1.124), income(2.426). On the other hand, in terms of gender, probability of willingness to pay was lower in female by 0.364 than in male. The implication of this study is that an interview is held with actual user and specific amount of money is presented regarding the economic value of children's library, which has been little known until now.

  • This study investigated the ratios of area, according to the domains and functions, of a public library. To this end, 20 public libraries were selected as samples from the 2012 Public Library Construction Casebook and from cases of consulting on the construction and operation of public libraries. The domains of a public library were categorized into data reading, cultural education, operation, common use, and others. There was a large difference in the area ratios between public libraries that were built with the aid of consulting (Group B) and those without consulting (Group A). In functional terms, the data(bookshelf) space and reading space had similar ratios within a data reading room, while the ratio of the library information space was smaller. Within a general data reading room, the ratio of the library information space was 12%, while the ratios of the data space and seating space were 44%, respectively. Moreover, within a data reading room for children, the ratios of the library information space and children's space were adjusted to 14%, respectively, while the data space and seating space each accounted for 36%, with either 3- or 5-decker bookshelves installed. This study has identified how to calculate the area for each domain, capacity of books, and seating capacity by applying area ratios through functions in the data storage domain, along with numbers of books and seats per unit space. This study has also succeeded in calculating the required area and seats for each type of data storage room by applying the number of books that exist. However, this study has its limitation in that the regional characteristics(Metropolis, Small & medium size cities, Rural areas) were not considered because the number of samples was only 20 libraries.

  • This paper investigates the Bunko, the center of Japanese children's reading movement, and its impact on the development of Japanese school library. Paper is consisted by two parts , one subject is the programs and the law made by government which is related to either the school library or children's reading, the other is Bunko movements initiated by citizen mostly mothers who wish to improve their children's reading environment. The Bunko movements started in 1960's and motivate the establishment of public libraries in 1970's, and it has triggered activating the school library after early 1990's. By analyzing the relationships of the two subjects it can be concluded that they are tightly connected each other by emphasizing the function of school library not as a teaching-learning center but as a reading facility. It makes difficult for the Japanese school library to establish the most important function of supporting curriculum.
