  • Populus Tomentiglandulosa (PT) is known for pharmacological effects against ischemia-injury and immune activity. This study aimed to investigate the nutritional components, total phenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant activities of PT extract. Among the mineral contents, the K content (907.5 mg/100 g) was the highest in the PT extract. Vitamins C (6.1 mg/100 g) and nicotinic acid (3.1 mg/100 g) were also found in high amounts. Fructose (2.2%) and glucose (1.6%) were found as free sugars in the PT extract. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of PT extract were 115.4±0.85 mg GAE/g and 20.9±1.14 mg QE/g, respectively. Results of HPLC analysis of PT extract identified catechin (9.1±0.27 mg/g), caffeic acid (4.1±0.57 mg/g), p-coumaric acid (2.1±0.49 mg/g), chlorogenic acid (1.6±1.86 mg/g), and gallic acid (1.4±0.35 mg/g), respectively. These results suggest that the PT extract possesses high nutritional component and antioxidant properties, which can be used as functional bioresources.

  • $PbTiO_3$(PT)thin films were prepared by simultaneous of $TiO_2$ and PbO on Si(100) substrate using metaloganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Titanium tetra-isopropoxide (TTIP) and $Pb(TMHD)_2$were used as source materials. As evaporation temperature and flow rate of TTIP were examined the crystal structure of PT thin films using XRD with setting deposition temperature, flow rate of Pb, and total flow rate of $520^{\circ}C$, 30 sccm, and 750 sccm, respectively. PT thin films could be deposited under 48~$50^{\circ}C$ and 18~22sccm of evaporation temperature and flow rate of TTIP, respectively. It was found that lead, oxygen, and silicon diffused at the iaterface between the film and the substrate.

  • The ferroelectric properties of PZT(53/47) thin film was investigated by methoxy enthanol solution based on sol-gel method. The thickness of each layer by spincoating 0.25M sol at one time was $0.1{\mu}m$ and crack-free film was formed. $LaNiO_3/Si(100)$ electrode and $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si(100)$ electrode was coated by PZT sol at several times. PZT orientation was confirmed as a method of XRD and coercive field(Ec) as well as remnant polarization(Pr) was investigated from hysterisis curve. As a result of XRD analysis, we can know that the orientation of on PZT/LNO/Si(100) is better than on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si(100)$. The remnant polarization(Pr) in LNO electrode was $87.5{\mu}C/cm^2$ and $39.8{\mu}C/cm^2$ in Pt. From this figures, it is investigated that the Pr in LNO electrode was better than in Pt.

  • The $NO_2$ gas sensing properties of multiple-networked, Pt-loaded $TeO_2$ nanorod sensors were examined. Scanning electron microscopy revealed nanowires with diameters of 50-100 nm and lengths of a few micrometers. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the nanrods were tetragonal-structured, single crystal $TeO_2$. The Pt-loaded $TeO_2$ nanorod sensors exhibited sensitivities of 11.00, 10.26, 11.23 and 11.97% at $NO_2$ concentrations of 10, 50, 100 and 200 ppm, respectively, at $300^{\circ}C$. These sensitivities were more than 10 times higher than those of bare-$TeO_2$ nanorod sensors. The response times of the sensors were 310, 260, 270 and 230 sec at $NO_2$ concentrations of 10, 50, 100 and 200 ppm, respectively. The recovery times of the Pt-loaded $TeO_2$ nanorods were 390, 330, 335, and 330 sec at $NO_2$ concentrations of 10, 50, 100 and 200 ppm, respectively. The origin of the enhanced sensing properties of the $TeO_2$ nanorods by Pt loading is discussed.

  • A high temperature tolerant microelectronic-based carbon monioxde(CO) gas sensor has been developed. The gas sensing performance has been studied over a wide temperature range$(100-300^\circ{C)}$. The gas sensitivity of the sensor is high, its initial sensing behavior is very fast, and the sensor is reproducible. Pt-SiC and $Pt-SnO_2-SiC$ diodes are fabricated using standard semiconductor processes and their CO gas-sensing behaviors are analyzed as a function of CO gas concentration and temperature by I-V and $\Delta{I-t}$ methods under steady-state and transient conditions. The sensitivity of the device with $Pt-SnO_2$ catalytic gate is higher than that of the Pt gate. The experimental results indicate that $SnO_2$ layer improves the catalytic reaction of the Pt layer.

  • Using an atom superposition and electron delocalization molecular orbital (ASED-MO) method, we have investigated the vibrational and chemisorptive properties of adsorbates on a Pt(100) surface during CO oxidation. The calculated vibrational stretching frequency for a predicted structure of $[CO{\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}O]^*$ complex is 1642 $cm^{-1}$. The CO bond stretches by 0.05 ${\AA}$ when adsorbed on one-fold site, and is tilted by 30 ${\AA}$ from the surface normal. We find the decrease in CO vibrational frequency on going from the one-fold to the high coordination sites. Binding at the two-fold site is predicted to be favored for $Pt_{18}(100)$ and at the 1-fold site for $Pt_{23}(100)$. From the calculations of the steric interactions, we have found that pre-adsorbed oxygen modifies the surface so that CO is adsorbed on the one-fold site ordered in a $(\sqrt{2}{\times}{\sqrt}{2})R45^{\circ}$. Our results are in good agreement with recent experimental findings of Hong et al. [J.Phys. Chem. 1993, 97, 1258].

  • Pure culture experiments were conducted to assess the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of phlorotannins (PT) isolated from Ascophyllum nodosum (brown seaweed) on Escherichia coli O157:H7. In Exp. 1, one non-O157:H7 strain (25922) and three strains of E. coli O157:H7 (3081, EDL933 and E318N) were cultured in M9 medium with PT included at 0 (control), 25, 50 or $100{\mu}g/ml$ (n = 3). Bacterial growth was monitored by $OD_{600}$ at 0, 4, 6, 12 and 24 h, and by dilution plating at 0, 4, 6 and 24 h. All strains were inhibited (p<0.001) by PT to varying degrees. At 50 or $100{\mu}g/ml$, PT prevented growth of all four strains. At $25{\mu}g\;PT/ml$, growth of 25922, 3081, E318N and EDL933 was inhibited for 6, 12 and 24 h, respectively, but 25922 and 3081 resumed growth by 12 and 24 h. Direct plating confirmed bactericidal effects of PT on all four strains at $100{\mu}g/ml$, and on EDL933 and E318N at $50{\mu}g/ml$. In Exp. 2, strains 25922 and 3081 were incubated with no tannins or with $50{\mu}g/ml$ of PT, purified condensed tannins (CT) from Quebracho (Schinopsis balansaei), or purified tannic acid from Rhus semialata (Anacardiaceae) as hydrolysable tannins (HT). Strain 3081 was unaffected by HT or CT, but was completely inhibited (p<0.001) by PT at 4, 6 and 24 h. Strain 25922 was unaffected by HT, slightly inhibited by CT, and almost eradicated by PT at 4 and 6 h. Transmission electron microscopy revealed tannin-mediated alterations to bacterial cell walls. Phlorotannins from A. nodosum exhibit growth-inhibiting and bactericidal effects in vitro against the strains of E. coli O157:H7 investigated. Anti-E. coli efficacy of A. nodosum PT is superior to that of terrestrial tannins purified from Quebracho and from Rhus semialata.

  • The crystallization of FePt/MgO(100) magnetic thin films of various thicknesses has been studied using synchrotron x-ray scattering, atomic force microscope, and vibrating sample magnetometer. In film with a 500-${\AA}$-thick, ordered (fct) FePt phase was dominantly crystallized into perpendicular (001) grains keeping the magnetically easy c-axis normal to the film plane during annealing. In film with a 812-${\AA}$-thick, however, longitudinal (110) grains keeping the c-axis parallel to the film plane were grown on top of the perpendicular (001) grains. The behavior of the magnetic properties was consistent with the thickness dependence of the crystallization. We attribute the thickness dependence of the crystallization to the substrate effect, which prefers the growth of the c-axis oriented perpendicular grains near the film/substrate interfacial area.

  • A novel pretreatment technique was applied to the conventional Pt/alumina catalyst to prepare for the highly efficient catalyst for the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in hydrogen-rich condition. Their performance was investigated by selective CO oxidation reaction. CO conversion with the oxygen-treated Pt/Alumina catalyst increased remarkably especially at the low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$. This result is promising for the normal operation of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) without CO poisoning of the anode catalyst. XRD analysis results showed that metallic Pt peaks were not observed for the oxygen-treated catalyst. This implies that well dispersed small Pt particles exist on the catalyst. This result was continued by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis. Consequently, it can be concluded that highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles could be prepared by the novel pretreatment technique and thus, CO conversion could be increased considerably especially at the low temperatures below $100^{\circ}C$.
