  • Numerous foreign studies document perceived difference of the public toward male and female doctors, but little is known about the way Korean college students view the gender of the doctors. This study investigates whether or not college students evaluate the technical and socio-psychological skills differently depending on the gender of the doctors. This study also tests the association between the gender of respondents and the gender of doctors of their choice for several types of diseases. The 440 college students at one campus were selected using systematic stratified random sampling technique and were interviewed by questionnaire survey. Findings indicate that while the scores of technical skills are in favor of male doctors, the scores of socio-psychological skills are favorable to female doctors. We also find that there Is a statistically significant relationship between the gender of respondents and the gender of doctors of their choice.

  • Conversion disorder is defined as a specific and enduring sensorimotor dysfunction that contradicts known neurological or musculoskeletal pathology or physical findings. The patient with conversion symptoms unconsciously adopts these symptoms to convert their psychological stress to a physical phenomenon. Conversion disorder often involves the mimicry of organic symptoms similar to those experienced by a relative or an acquaintance. Because conversion symptoms are produced by psychological stress, specific treatment strategy and reinforcement program are needed for treatment. Treatment comprises avoiding unnecessary medical tests and removing symptoms by using graded exercises given by physical therapists. Clinical therapists must maintain a continuous and detailed follow-up to completely recover from conversion symptoms. The goal of treatment is to emphasize health rather than disease, to resolve physical symptoms, and to prevent recurrence. This study looks into the case reports of 4 patients diagnosed with conversion disorder.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of wearing behavior of clothing and dietary behavior, and psychological characteristics on the obese children. For this purpose, the questionnaire method was used and the subjects were 1,501 elementary school children in the 4th to the 6th grade and their mothers (1,459), in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Andong cities. The children were divided into two groups, such as a normal weight group (NWG) and an obese group (OG). There were significant differences in adaptability to the cold and the heat, and in wearing behavior of clothing for body shape between NWG and OG. Scores for balanced dietary behavior was higher in OG than in NWG while dietary control perceived by their mothers was better in NWG than in OG. Stress was lower and self-esteem was higher in NWG than in OG. Experimental tests are needed to analyze the behavior of obese children on the basis of the obtained results of this study.

  • There is an urgent need to improve the tool predicting success or failure of academic achievement of nursing in Korea so as to identify as early as possible those students who should receive special instruction and to improve screening procedures for admission of nursing. The main purpose of this study is to identify the correlation between the grade point averages of courses learned and their psychological test characteristics in a baccalaureate nursing program. All 240 students, except freshmen, enrolled in Nursing Department of Seoul National University in the spring semester, 1972, participated in this study. All of the subjects completed the psychometric tests such as interest test, personality test and test of self-concept. Total grade point averages, grade point averages of general education subjects, of supporting science courses and of professional education subjects were used as performance criteria of the students. Through the calculation of product-moment correlation coefficients between the test scores and four grade point averages of each class and of total subjects, the following findings and recommendations were obtained. 1. There was so much variation in characteristics of interest test correlated with academic achievement of nursing students in each class. 2. Since the school objectives, curriculum and teaching strategies may affect predictive efficiency of characteristics of students'interest test, interest test must-be utilized in a homogeneous group in order to predict school achievement. 3. Characteristics of interest test positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages of all subjects were scientific interest-biological, scientific interest-physical, and humanitarian interest. Scientific interest-physics: was the only characteristic positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of professional courses. 4. There were various patterns in characteristics of personality test correlated with school achievement of nursing students by class pattern and personality maturation as they progress toward higher classes. 5. A characteristic of personality test, responsibility, is in high positive correlation with academic achievement in the upper division of classes. 6. Responsibility was the sole personality factor positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of nursing courses in the total number of students. 7. There were very different correlation coefficients between characteristics of self-concept test and academic achievement according to the type of each class and type of courses they learned. 8. Characteristics of self-concept test positively correlated at significant level with total grade point averages and grade point averages of nursing courses of all students were physical self and row variability. Those who have positive concept on their own physical status and who are deficient in self-concept were higher in total grade point averages and grade point averages of professional courses than other students. 9. Scores of professional courses offered in freshmen and sophomore classes were in positive correlation with limited number of characteristics of psychological tests. In pursuit of a tool predicting successful academic achievement of nursing students, their G.P.A. during the junior and senior year of nursing will serve as the more reasonable criteria. 10. Junior students of this school were in higher positive correlation with many psychological factors than other classes.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of adolescent's self-esteem and psychological separation from parents on their interpersonal competence. The study sample consisted of 625 high school students in Seoul, Korea who completed a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and hierarchical regression analysis. The main findings were as follows. First, the level of interpersonal competence differed by gender. Second, a higher level of interpersonal competence among adolescents was significantly correlated with a higher level of adolescent's positive self-esteem, lower level of adolescent's negative self-esteem, and higher level of psychological separation. Third, positive self-esteem was the most significant predictor of adolescents' interpersonal competence, followed by parent's regulation. Overall, the results suggest that self-esteem is very important to promote positive interpersonal competence among adolescents. Therefore, programs to address such issues are strongly needed.

  • Purpose: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a disabling pain that mostly occurs in elderly women, but rarely in men. It is characterized by an unremitting oral burning sensation and pain without detectable oral mucosal changes. We investigated the clinical and hematologic features of middle-aged men with BMS, and compared the results to those of men with oral mucositis. Methods: Five men with BMS ($48.60{\pm}6.19years$) and five age-matched controls with oral mucositis ($49.80{\pm}15.26years$) underwent clinical and psychological evaluations and blood tests. Psychological status was evaluated using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. Cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were determined from the blood samples. Results: ADH level was significantly lower in men with BMS than in the controls. ADH levels correlated with testosterone (p<0.01), and ACTH levels strongly correlated with ESR (p<0.05). Progesterone level positively correlated with FSH and LH levels. Pain intensity on a visual analogue scale correlated with estradiol level only in men with BMS. Among psychological factors, the obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal-sensitivity, and anxiety scores were higher in men with BMS than in the controls (p<0.05). However, no correlations were observed between the psychological and hematologic factors in both groups. The BMS symptoms presented only on the tongue, with the lateral border being the most prevalent area. Conclusions: Men with BMS may experience dysregulated endocrinologic or psychoneuroendocrinologic interactions, which might affect oral BMS symptoms, aggravating the severity of the burning sensation.
