  • This study aimed to provide a strategy for selecting an adequate combination of growth intervals(i.e. times between age $T_1$ and age $T_2$) to be used to improve the reality of the growth equation through obtaining better precision of parameter estimates. Variety of growth functions were fitted to the data and one equation which best fitted the data was chosen for the analysis. A modified Schumacher projection equation, selected as a best equation, that included dummy variables representing locality as a predictor variable was fitted for basal area and height equations with nonoverlapping growth interval and all possible growth interval data sets of Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb.Franco). The data were measured in all parts of the South Island of New Zealand. It was found that the precision of parameter estimates was increased in both basal area and height equations by using data set which contained a range of measurement intervals from short to long term.

  • This research describes the construction of a site index equation and curves for Douglas-fir plantation (Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb. Franco) in Nelson, New Zealand. The data sets of 146 Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) were used to build the model, and it was developed using the difference equation method. Parameter estimates were obtained using the non-linear routine of the SAS, PROC NLIN procedure. Of the models tested, a variant of the Schumacher polymorphic yield function showed the higher precision of fitting. About 95% of the observations used to fit the model could be predicted within ${\pm}1.2m$ of the actual values. Therefore, polymorphic family of site index curves, which reflect different shapes for the different site index classes, were derived from the Schumacher equation. It was found that the polymorphic site index equation was more accurate than the anamorphic equation in this study.

  • Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesd Mirb. Franco) is highly regarded as a commercial timber species throughout the world in part due to its fast growth relative to many other species. In this study, basal area per hectare equation for Douglas-fir plantations in Southland of New Zealand has been developed based on medium measurement cycles of permanent sample plots data set. The function was developed using the algebraic difference equation method, and various sigmoid-shaped projection equations were used. Parameter estimation was obtained by non-linear routine of the SAS. As a result, of the functions tested a variant of the Schumacher polymorphic function including site index and thinning term as predictor variables showed the higher precision of the fitting. The results indicate that site index is positively correlated with basal area growth. And the thinning term was found to be useful to increase precision of the model.

  • International efforts to prevent illegally logged wood are expanding around the world. The "Legal Wood Trade Promotion System" was enacted in Korea in 2019 to strengthen the legal import and distribution of commercial wood in Korea. Since then, this system has promoted and ensured that the imported wood and wood products are legal with respect to the country of origin, wood species, and harvested area. As verification methods, DNA analysis technology and anatomical analysis using a microscope are mainly used in conjunction. Therefore, in this study, wood species of plywood were identified by analyzing the anatomical characteristics of various wood products for the first time. Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) and larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere) plywoods (7, 9 ply) were obtained from four companies that supply plywood in Korea. After cutting each company's plywood to a size of about 1 cm3, the layers from top to bottom were separated into single layers, and three sections were observed using an optical microscope. The results revealed that the plywood was composed of a mixture of softwood and hardwood wood species, pine wood species, poplar wood species, or a mixture of larch and pine wood species. Identification of wood species using microscopy is important and can enable the scientific analysis and verification of various wood products, including plywood, imported from countries where the likelihood of indiscriminate distribution of illegal wood and illegal logging is high.
