  • The five species of family Bagridae in Korea were analyzed by numerical taxonomic method based on the twelve osteological characters of 110 cleared specimens. Family Bagridae of Korea was classified into genera Pseudobagrus and Leiocassis. Genus Pseudobagrus has P. fulvidraco, Pseudobagrus sp. and P. brevicorpus, and Leiocassis also has L nitidus and L ussuriensis. P. brevicorpus represented more closely relationships to P. fulvidraco rather than Pseudobagrus sp. in the morphological features of skeleton.

A Taxonomic Revision of the Family Bagridae (Pisces, Siluriformes) from Korea (한국산 동자개과 어류의 분류학적 재검토)

  • The morphological characters of the family Bagridae living in the river systems flowing into the south and western seas of Korea were reviewed and a taxonomic revision was made. The family Bagridae was classified into two genera: Pseudobagrus and Leiocassis. Species corresponding to genus Pseudobagrus were P. fulvidraco, P. koreanus Uchida, sp. nov., P. brevicorpus, and genus Leiocassis were L. nitidus, L. ussuriensis, and L. longirostris. Among them Pseudobagrus koreanus Uchida, sp. nov. and P. brevicorpus are endemic species of Korea. As the intergeneric taxonomic characters, the outstanding morphological differences between genera Pseudobagrus and Leiocassis were distinguished in following characters; the serrated structure of pectoral spine, the length of barbels, the number of pectoral fin rays, the structure of cranial lateral line system and the fused state of 3-4 hypurals. Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and Coreobagrus brevicorpus recorded previously in Korea were classified as Pseudobagrus fulvidraco and P. brevicorpus, respectively. Pelteobagrus nitidus and Pseudobagrus ussuriensis are also changed to genus Leiocassis. The characters of interspecific classification belonging to genera Pseudobagrus and Leiocasis were the shape of caudal fin, the form of body, the length of body, the number of anal fin ray and the number of gill rakers. Pseudobagrus sp. was named into Pseudobagrus koreanus Uchida, sp. nov..

  • The spermiogenesis and mature spermatozoa of Pseudobagrus fulvidraco were described by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis is characterized by lateral development of the flagellum, nuclear rotation, deep nuclear fossa formation and compaction into thick granules. The spermatozoa exhibit a round head containing a nucleus that lacks an acrosome, and having a midpiece and a flagellum. The midpiece is small and has a short cytoplasm including several mitochondria separated from the tail by the cytoplasmic canal. The flagellum contains the 9+2 classical axoneme structure and has two axonemal fins. The presence of axonemal fins in the flagellum is a common character in Bagridae. The interrelationships among the Bagridae as well as other teleosts are herein discussed.

  • Backcross hybridization between Korean bullhead Pseudobagrus fulvidraco female and Korean bullhead P. fulvidraco $\times$ Ussurian bullhead Leiocassis ussuriensis hybrid male was performed, and early viability and karyotype of the backcross hybrids were examined along with their parental species. Mean fertilization rate (86.8%), hatching success (70.7%) and early survival rate (76.4%) of backcross hybrids were similar with those found in the maternal species, the Korean bullhead. From the chromosome analysis, modal chromosome numbers of Korean bullhead, Ussurian bullhead, their hybrid and backcross hybrid were the same as 2n = 52. However, their karyotypes were different among genotypes. The karyotype of backcross hybrid was 22 metacentric + 18 submetacentacentric + 12 acrocentric chromosomes.

Effect of Water Temperatures and Photoperiods on Gondal Development in Banded Catfish Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (동자개(Pseudobagrus fulvidraco)의 생식소 발달에 수온과 광주기가 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate the role of water temperatures and photoperidos as environmental cues regulating reproductive rhythm in banded catfish Pseudobagrus fulvidraco, rearing experiments were conducted using sveral rearing regimes conbined with changes in photoperiods and water temperatures during growing and spawning periods. GSI of $23^{\circ}C$ was significantly higher than $18^{\circ}C$ in female, but 9 light of 18 and $23^{\circ}C$ were no difference in male. In case of estradiol, $18^{\circ}C$ and 15 L was higher than other experintal precinct after 20 days. But, end of the experiment, all of experimental precinct were no difference. Testosteron of female was no difference in $18^{\circ}C$-9 and 15 L after 20 days. Testosteron of male was no difference in $18^{\circ}C$-9 L. In case of 11-KT, control level was $0.39{\pm}0.03$ ng/mL and $18^{\circ}C$-9 L was no significantly difference after 20 days. But, 15 L was higher than other experimental precinct.

  • Bagrid catfish hybrid between Korean bullhead (Pseudobagrus fulvidraco) and Ussurian bullhead (Leiocassis ussuriensis) was produced by artificial fertilization. Modal chromosome numbers of Korean bullhead, Ussurian bullhead and their hybrid were the same as 2n=52. The karyotypes were 22 metacentric (M), 22 submetacentacentric (SM), and 8 acrocentric (A) chromosomes for Korean bullhead, 22M+14SM+16A for Ussurian bullhead and 22M+18SM+12A for their hybrid. The hybrid bullhead karyotype consisted of each haploid set of parental species chromosomes. Erythrocytic sizes and DNA contents of hybrids were intermediate between two parental species.

  • Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer known to be a suspected xenoestrogen and a causative agent of oxidative damage to the RBC cell membrane ir vitro. We evaluated the toxic effects of a scarcely documented aquatic environmental pollutant, DEHP, on selected haematological endpoints in the bagrid catfish, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco. Bagrid catfish were exposed to DEHP (300, 1,000 mg DEHP kg body weight$^{-1}$) through thrice intraperitoneal injection and effects were assessed in blood of the exposed organisms. Haematological property, serum organic and inorganic chemistry were monitored in blood of Bagrid catfish. DEHP exposed-fish showed erythropenia; low hematocrit (Ht) and hemoglobin (Hb) content and red blood cell count showed a significantly higher than in that of the control group. The treatment group showed a significantly lower concentration of serum total protein, cholesterol and triglyceride compared with those in the control group. The value of calcium and osmolality were significantly decreased in the DEHP treatment group, compared with the control group.

Feeding Habits of Larva and Juvenile of the Korean Bullhead, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson) (동자재 자.치어의 섭식 습성)

  • The larvae of the Korean bullhead, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco were satiated with the food uptake equivalent to 13% of its body weight and required 2.5, 11 and 15 hrs to digest 50, 90 and 100% of the consumed food. The juveniles were satiated with food equivalent to 0.65% of its body weight and required 9 and 19 hrs to digest 50 and 90% of the consumer. Apparently, daily food intake perceptibly decrease with the larvae grew to juvenile stage. Both larvae (8.3-14.0mm TL) and juvenile (41.1-65.7mm TL) tend to feed frequently than to get satiated once a day and appeared to be nocturnal feeders.
