In this study, the fungal strains KNU-Gunwi 2B and KNU-SOT5 were isolated from root-soil in a hillside and the cherry tree bark (Prunus serrulata), respectively from Gyeongbuk province in Korea. The strain KNU-SOT5 produced dark brown chlamydospores that were smooth to lightly rough-walled, globose to ellipsoidal, and the conidia were aseptate, guttulate, mostly fusiform with a diameter of 5.3-17.6×4.2-7.0 ㎛. Strain KNU-Gunwi 2B produced phialides that were smooth-walled, cylindrical with semi-papillate apices and the conidia were pale-green, broadly ellipsoid, and sometimes cylindrical with a diameter of 4.4-8.0×2.3-4.0 ㎛. The strain KNU-SOT5 and KNU-Gunwi 2B were resolved based on cultural and morphological characteristics, along with the phylogenetic analysis using the small subunit (SSU), large subunit (LSU), and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) regions. The fungal strains KNU-SOT5 and KNU-Gunwi 2B were identified as Dothidea insculpta and Metarhizium rileyi, which have not been reported in Korea.
This field experiment aimed to identify the optimal planting density for establishing a management plan for ground-cover plants under roadside trees. Liriope platyphylla and Hosta longipes both widely used for planting under trees were selected as the plant materials and planted under Prunus serrulata var. spontanea at different planting densities. Based on the distance between each plant, 4 planting densities were used: 11%, 25%, 49%, and 83% with three replications. To estimate plant growth, plant height, number of leaves and tillers, fresh and dry weight, and visual quality were investigated. Liriope platyphylla exhibited relatively better growth at the highest planting density of 83%. For Hosta longipes, however, the lower growth was positively correlated with high planting density. Therefore, the optimal planting density for Liriope platyphylla is 83% and for Hosta longipes is 11%.
In an effort to evaluate the qualities of the unused woods designed for art materials, Yellow pine, Pitch pine, Suwon poplar, Platanus and Cherry grown in Korea has been investigated in the study. Physical and mechanical properties such as density, hardness, roughness, and abrasion of the woods were examined. Among the five species, Cherry wood showed the highest density in green, air-dried and oven-dried conditions. Hardness of Cherry wood was higher than those of Suwon poplar and Platanus. In softwoods, Pitch pine showed greater hardness than Yellow pine. Yellow pine and Platanus had the highest values of wood surface roughness. Abrasion value of cross, radial and tangential sections was the highest in Yellow pine and Suwon poplar. It has been concluded from the experiment that physical and mechanical properties such as density, hardness, roughness, and abrasion of the woods can be used as an indicator of the suitability for woodcraft material.

This study investigated 62 nested quadrat plots of Jinaksan to identify community classification and changes of the vegetation by using the phytosocial method and analyzed importance values. Vegetation types were classified into 8 communities: Quercus mongolica community, Q. variableis community, Q. aliena community, Pinus densiflora, Q. acutissima, Zelkova serrata, Carpinis laxiflora, and C. tschonoskii. The significance value was highest in Q. mongolica (62.75) followed by P. densiflora (55.16), Q. variabilis community (25.03), Z. serrata (22.17), Q. aliena (18.30), Prunus serrulata var. pubescens (16.86), C. laxiflora (13.25), Q. acutissima (10.72), C. tschonoskii (10.08), Q. serrata (8.02), Fraxinus sieboldiana (6.93), Acer pseudosieboldianum (6.73), and Styrax obassis (5.73). Quercus mongolica displayed a stable distribution pattern, presenting a reverse J-shaped curve from the diameter at breast height (DBH) analysis, and it was judged that current state would be maintained for a certain period. In addition, P. densiflora is expected to dominate for the time being and Quercus species are expected to gradually decrease.
We conducted this study as a fundamental study on the response of various tree species against acid rain. The tree species used for this study were Zelkova serrata, Robinia pseudoacacia, Quercus acutissima, Prunus serrulata, Ginkgo biloba, Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora. The leaves were examined for the pH changes by treatment time and the chlorophyll content into various pH solution in vitro. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. When the leaves were immersed in the solution of various pH(pH 3.0-pH 6.0) levels, the pH were changed to species specific pH ranges as pH 5.0~pH 5.5 of Z. serrata, pH 5.5~pH 6.0 of R. pseudoacacia, pH 4.5~pH 5.0 of Q. acutissima, pH 5.5~pH 6.0 of P. serrulata, pH 3.5~pH 4.5 of G. biloba, pH 3.5~pH 4.5 of P. koraiensis until 48 hours. However, in case of P. densiflora, it was difficult to find specific pH range of the species. Z. serrata, R. pseudoacacia and P. serrulata showed a little pH increasing by pH 2.0 solution treatment, while other species showed no change by the solution. 2. The amount of chlorophyll contents in Z. serrata, R. pseudoacacia and P. serrulata were decreased after immersing in the pH 2.0 solution. Chlorophyll content was almost constant in other pH levels. Other species showed almost constant chlorophyll contents in various pH levels and treatment time.
Prunus sargentii complex of subgenus Cerasus is an Eastem Asiatic plant group that exhibits a broad range of morphological variation and includes P. takesimensis, P. yedosensis, P. verecunda, and P. sargentii. In this study, a morphological analysis was undertaken to determine whether the observed morphological variation was primarily attributable to morphological discontinuities among the taxa. P. sargentii, which distributed eastem area in Korea, northern area in Japan and far east Russia had umbel like inflorescence and additionally was characterized by sticky bud and leaf twigs, compared with P. serrulata complex. Also, P. verecunda in Korea and Japan was characterized by umbel like inflorescence and presence of hair in leaf, petiole and pedicel, and was treated as a variety of P. sargentii. Evidence obtained from multivariate morphometric analyses indicated that the entity of P. takesimensis formed a cohesive group somewhat distinct from P. sargenti.. Especially, P. takesimensis was characterized by relatively small flowers (26-32mm in diameter) and many flowers [(2)3-5] per umbel inflorescence, compared with P. sargentii (34-48mm and 2(3) per inflorescence) and should be recognized as an independent and endeImic taxon in Korea. Additionally, P. yedosensis, which was known to have umbel inflorescence (short peduncle type) with pubescent style based on the type specimen, was comprised of corymb inflorescence (long peduncle type) as well. The morphological differentiation between these two types of P. yedosensis was not considered sufficient to warrant recognition of specific status because of the putative hybrid origin, no distinctive geographical distribution pattern, and existence of various peduncle length on Island Jeju-do of Korea.

This study aims to understand the characteristics of dangsan forests and rural community forests (RCF), and seek for a landscape management scheme. Dangsan forests and RCF have been maintained by local residents since hundreds of years ago. However, many of them have been disturbed. The case sites were derived from the twenty villages previous investigated where dangsan forests and RCF's remainrd. The two sites were remodelled to restore what have been degraded. Hanbam village has maintained its dangsan forest with good management practices, whereas the dangsan forest and RCF of Goiran village showed relatively poor management. The size of dangsan forest at hanbam village was 13,784$m^2$, and major tree species was Pinus densiflora. In total, 151 trees with more than 30cm in DBH were standing on the site. As a cultural activity, the dangsan festival have been held in January $5^{th}$ by lunar calendar to the 2005 at the Jindongdan, a dangsan tree made of stone. The RCF of Hanbam village has disappeared due to the event of landslide in 1930, which needs to be restored. Goiran village has a dangsan forest and a RCF. The forests in Goiran village revealed many problems due to bad management practice. The prototype of the dangsan forest was deteriorated by introduced Prunus serrulata and the facilities for physical training. A systematic management scheme for dangsan forests and RCF's should be established with a close partnership among local residents, experts, and local government.
This study was conducted to select appropriate woody species and to propose appropriate woody species and to propose appropriate mounding hight through analysis of soil characteristics, planting state, draining state, growth amount and injured index of woody species. Soil acidity was pH 5.9~7.4, as alkaline soil. The state of draining was proved to be inappropriate for the growth of woody species because of bad draining state. Injured index of woody species were Prunus serrulata var, spontanea in deciduous tree because of polluted water leaked from sanitary landfill and density of planting tree. Appropriate mounding heignt of the planted area which was itensive injured wood species was not less than 80cm. Appropreate woody species in wanggyoi-dong apartment complex were Zelkova serrata, Acer trifloum, Acer buergerianum, Sophora japonica, Ailanthus altissima and appropriate mounding height was not less than 50~60cm.

In this study, emission rates (ER) of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) were measured by varying levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). An appropriate plan for ozone reduction according to increasing ecology area ratio in future metropolitan areas was suggested. Several trees were selected as representative tree species in urban areas. Emission rates and composition ratios of monoterpene and isoprene emitted from these trees were estimated and compared. As a result, it was found that emission rates of BVOCs were considerably different depending on tree species. Especially, BVOCs emitted from Platanus orientalis and Quercus mongolica could significantly affect ozone increase in the metropolitan area, because the emission rates were several thousands to ten thousand times higher than those emitted from Zelkova serrata and Prunus serrulata. Furthermore, it was observed that emission rates of BVOCs by species increased maximum up to 10 times when PAR, which has close relations with temperature, rose. It was concluded that tree species such as Zelkova serrata et al., was appropriate for metropolitan areas since the species has low ozone potential and good landscape. Suppose this type of trees are planted on purpose in the urban areas, better ambient air quality will be promised in the future.
