  • This study aims to analyze determinants and complementarities of the technological innovation protection mechanisms of Korean manufacturing firms. The results of the inter-industry comparison show that there are differentiations of the determinants among industries. Independence between legal and strategic protection mechanisms is found in the high technology industry, whereas complementarities exist between them in the low technology industry. It implies that the firms should take into account their endogenous and exogenous factors to choose appropriate combinations of the mechanisms when they build up their innovation protection strategies. This study expects to contribute to establishing technological innovation protection strategies in manufacturing industry.

  • With the fast growth of Internet and a new widespread interest in optical networks, the unparalleled potential of Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is leading to further research and development efforts. One of those areas of research is Path Protection Mechanism. It is widely accepted that layer three protection and recovery mechanisms are too slow for today’s reliability requirements. Failure recovery latencies ranging from several seconds to minutes, for layer three routing protocols, have been widely reported. For this reason, a recovery mechanism at the MPLS layer capable of recovering from failed paths in 10’s of milliseconds has been sought. In light of this, several MPLS based protection mechanisms have been proposed, such as end-to-end path protection and local repair mechanism. Those mechanisms are designed for intra-domain recoveries and little or no attention has been given to the case of non-homogenous independent inter-domains. This paper presents a novel solution for the setup and maintenance of independent protection mechanisms within individual domains and merged at the domain boundaries. This innovative solution offers significant advantages including fast recovery across multiple nonhomogeneous domains and high scalability. Detailed setup and operation procedures are described. Finally, simulation results using OPNET are presented showing recovery times of a few milliseconds.

  • 오존층 파괴에 의해 지표면에 도달하는 자외선, 특히 UV-B(ultraviolet-B radiation, 280∼320nm)의 방사량이 증가하고 있다.

  • The concurrent injection of cosolvent and air, a cosolvent-air (CA) flood was recently suggested for a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation technology. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the DNAPL removal mechanisms of the CA flood and to quantify mass transfer rate coefficients during CA flooding. DNAPL removal mechanisms were examined by evaluating the effects of air flow rate and DNAPL solubility and visually documented at a pore-scale. Two serial processes, immiscible displacement and dissolution, were experimentally and visually documented during CA flooding. Mass transfer rate coefficients (K) were computed from the data showing PCE saturation versus time. Results showed that CA floods exhibited higher K values than cosolvent floods without concurrent air injection. • New possibilities are discussed for cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) as sensor materials for detection of ionizing radiation, biologically active UV radiation, and the presence of hazardous vapors in atmosphere. A distinguishing property of CLC-based detectors is their 'bioequivalence', i.e., mechanisms of their response to external factors essentially imitate the corresponding mechanisms of biological tissues. Such detectors can ensure sufficiently high sensitivity to make feasible their use as alarm indicators or in biophysical studies. Specific examples ate given of sensor compositions and their response characteristics.

  • In the age of smartphones, users accomplish their daily tasks using their smartphones due to the significant growth in smartphone technology. Due to these tremendous expansions, attackers are highly motivated to penetrate numerous mobile marketplaces with their developed malicious apps. Android has the biggest proportion of the overall market share when compared to other platforms including Windows, iOS, and Blackberry. This research will discuss the Android security features, vulnerabilities and threats, in addition to some existing protection mechanisms.

  • This paper presents a new enhanced dynamic and multilayer protection(DMP) routing scheme that considers cooperation between packet and wavelength switching domain in order to minimize the resource consumption. The paper describes the architecture of the multilayer network scenario and compares the proposed algorithm with other routing mechanisms applying protection at the IP/multi-protocol label switching(MPLS) layer or at the optical layer. Simulation results show that DMP reduces the number of optical-electrical-optical(o-e-o) operations and makes an efficient use of the network resources compared to non-multilayer proposals.

  • The use of program formats has slowly but surely developed into an important component of the television industry. This article examines the surprising gap between the constantly growing, multi-billion-dollar trade of program formats and their unclear and contradictory legal treatment. From both the social and commercial standpoints, television formats are valuable creations. Understanding the two products, the paper and program stages, of a television format and their respective markets, is fundamental to discussions of its legal protection. Interestingly, under current law, the less-developed stages of the process (program ideas and paper formats) are awarded more protection than the aired program format, which accumulates higher levels of investment, creativity, and expression. Internal industry mechanisms, such as vertical integration, damage to reputation, and industry institutions, exist in both markets and are still able to control and influence members' behavior to some extent. However, while the influence of internal industry mechanisms is still strong in the paper format market, in the program format market, which continues to grow, such mechanisms have weakened, amplifying the importance of a clear legal system. The absence of protection will certainly not completely eliminate the production of new program formats. However, these factors do not add up to a case against protection. The changes in the program format market in the last two decades support the theory that the overall effect of providing legal protection for TV formats would promote beneficial competition and encourage more original creations. The underlying question for television formats should not be whether to protect but rather how.

  • The last two decades witnessed significant advances in the efforts of immune-parasitologists to elucidate the nature and role of the host mucosal defence mechanisms against intestinal nematode parasites. Aided by recent advances in basic immunology and biotechnology with the concomitant development of well defined laboratory models of infection, immunoparasitologists have more precisely analyzed and defined the different immune effector mechanisms during the infection; resulting in great improvement in our current knowledge and understanding of protective immunity against gastrointestinal (GI) nematode parasites. Much of this current understanding comes from experimental studies in laboratory rodents, which have been used as models of livestock and human GI nematode infections. These rodent studies, which have concentrated on Heligmosomoides polygyrus, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Strongyloides ratti/5. venezuelensis. Trichinella spiralis and trichuris muris infections in mice and rats, have helped in defining the types of T cell responses that regulate effector mechanisms and the effector mechanisms responsible for worm expulsion. In addition, these studies bear indications that traditionally accepted mechanisms of resistance such as eosinophilia and IgE responses may not play as important roles in protection as were previously conceived. In this review, we shall, from these rodent studies, attempt an overview of the mucosal and other effector responses against intestinal nematode parasites beginning with the indices of immune protection as a model of the protective immune responses that may occur in animals and man.

  • Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11 and Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) in IEEE 802.11e are contention-based access mechanism in Wireless LAN. Both DCF and EDCA reduce collisions based on inter-frame space (IFS) and backoff mechanisms. However, collisions are unavoidable even with the two mechanisms. Especially, in the EDCA model, the collision can be classified into interclass and intraclass collision. To eliminate interclass collision in Wireless LAN, we propose an interclass collision protection (ICP) scheme by employing contention protection period (CPP) after backoff, Analysis is performed for one dimensional EDCA model and for the proposed ICP based EDCA model.
