  • This study analyzes the effects of personal lockers, drinking fountains, and all-in-one shutters (hereinafter referred to as "corridor walking obstacles") on evacuation safety to suggest the necessity of operating a more effective educational facility safety certification system. To achieve this purpose, the five-story high school building with the obstacles installed in the corridor has been chosen, and evacuation tests through the Pathfinder Simulation Program have been carried out. When the evacuation exit is designated in the current state, where the students are placed on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors and the corridor walking obstacles are applied as a variable, the required safe egress time (RSET) is 322 seconds. This can lead to dangerous results in the event of a disaster by exceeding the available safe egress time (ASET) standard of 240 seconds by 82 seconds. When students are placed on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors under the same conditions, the RSET is 214.5 seconds, 25.5 seconds lower than the ASET standard, indicating that it is effective in reducing the impact of walking obstacles on evacuation time. The safety management plan for walking obstacles in the corridors is discussed, considering the special characteristics of the school corridors. The results of this study can be used as the necessary data for optimizing evacuation routes in corridors and creating a safe, educational environment.

  • The present work represents a technical guideline for decommissioning a disused teletherapy machine model Theratron-780 and contains category one 60Co radioactive source. The first section predicts the dose rate from the source in case of normal and radiological emergency situations via FLUKA-MC simulation code. Moreover, the dose assessment for the occupational during the whole process is calculated and compared to the measured values. A suggested cordoned area for safety and security in a radiological emergency is simulated. The second section lists the whole process's technical procedures, including (preview, dismantle, securing, transport and storage) of the disused teletherapy machine. Results show that the maximum obtained accumulated dose for occupational were found to be 24.5 ± 4.9 μSv in the dismantle and securing process in addition to 3.5 ± 1.8 μSv during loading on the transport vehicle and unloading at the storage facility. It was found that the measured accumulated dose for workers is in good agreement with the estimated one by uncertainty not exceeding 5% in normal operating conditions.

  • In December 2017, a fire at the Jecheon Sports Center caused 29 deaths and 40 injuries, and about 2 billion won in property damage. It is a facility used by unspecified people as a publicly used establishment with a piloti structure. The damage was expanded due to the ignition of combustible exterior materials, Lack of fire protection in horizontal and vertical penetrations. Although legislation has improved since the fire, it is not retroactively applied, increasing the risk of fire in existing buildings. Accordingly, it is necessary to examine the case of the Jecheon Sports Center fire and draw out the problems. In this study, the fire simulation results and the Jecheon Sports Center fire are comparatively analyzed and used as basic data for fire reduction measures in publicly used establishment. As a result of the fire simulation drive, in the case of the second floor, the room temperature exceeded the human life safety standard of 60 ℃ after about 700 seconds had passed. In the case of three floor, it is predicted that the indoor temperature will exceed about 350 ℃. and temporary complexation will occur in the indoor combustibles.

  • The government sees drones as a key future growth engine, prepares plans to foster the nation-led drone industry, conducts pilot projects in various fields, such as transporting goods, forest protection, monitoring, facility safety diagnosis, and is actively in the use of drones. In particular, the police are attempting to use drones to search for missing people. However, existing drones have a short operating time due to the limitation of battery time. The effectiveness of the existing drones is insufficient because it has no choice but to search by aerial photography on the mountain tops in hillside or dense forest. In this study, we propose an FPV drone that utilizes virtual reality as a drone that can overcome the limitations of searching for missing people.

  • This article presents the crucial role played by the French underground research laboratory (URL) in initiating the deep geological repository project Cigéo. In January 2023, Andra finalized the license application for the initial construction of Cigéo. Depending on Government's decision, the construction of Cigéo may be authorized around 2027. Cigéo is the result of a National program, launched in 1991, aiming to safely manage high-level and intermediate level long-lived radioactive wastes. This National program is based on four principles: 1) excellent science and technical knowledge, 2) safety and security as primary goals for waste management, 3) high requirements for environment protection, 4) transparent and open-public exchanges preceding the democratic decisions and orientations by the Parliament. The research and development (R&D) activities carried out in the URL supported the design and the safety demonstration of the Cigéo project. Moreover, running the URL has provided an opportunity to gain practical experience with regard to the security of underground operations, assessment of environmental impacts, and involvement of the public in the preparation of decisions. The practices implemented have helped gradually build confidence in the Cigéo project.

  • Wind Driven Rain (WDR) poses a significant threat to the building environment, especially in hurricane prone regions by causing interior and content damage during tropical storms and hurricanes. The damage due to rain intrusion depends on the total amount of water that enters the building; however, owing to the use of inadequate empirical methods, the amount of water intrusion is difficult to estimate accurately. Hence, the need to achieve full-scale testing capable of realistically simulating rain intrusion is widely recognized. This paper presents results of a full-scale experimental simulation at the NHERI Wall of Wind Experimental Facility (WOW EF) aimed at obtaining realistic rain characteristics as experienced by structures during tropical storms and hurricanes. A full-scale simulation of rain in strong winds would allow testing WDR intrusion through typical building components. A study of rain intrusion through a sliding glass door is presented, which accounted for the effects of multiple wind directions, test durations and wind speeds; configurations with and without shuttering systems were also considered. The study showed that significant levels of water intrusion can occur during conditions well below current design levels. The knowledge gained through this work may enhance risk modeling pertaining to loss estimates due to WDR intrusion in buildings, and it may help quantify the potential reduction of losses due to the additional protection from shuttering systems on sliding glass doors during winds.

  • This study is to prepare an evaluation standard about personal information protection and security management of a medical institution and to build up a grade standard of evaluation in PACS environment. We built up evaluation index based on 10 detailed items in four big categories (political security, technical security, data management security and physical security) by referring to ISO17799 (BS 7799), HIPPA (Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) and domestic medical law. We have investigated at the thirty places where medical facility with the extracted security criteria and security evaluation index. Average score of physical security list, one of the big categories, was 18.5/20 (93%) at all medical institutions. Political security score was 18.5/30 (62%), data management security score was 12/20 (60%) and technical security score was 17.5/30 (58%). Therefore, security evaluation score was average 67 in 30 general hospitals, which was 4th level. The results showed that it is necessary to establish evaluation and management standard about personal information protection and security consciousness which are weak in PACS environment.

  • Radioactive materials are in use and have many applications from the generation of electricity to the purposes of research, industry and medicine such as diagnosis and therapy. In the course of their use some of radioactive substances may be discharged into the environment from facilities using the unsealed radioactive materials, which are main artificial sources occurring the public exposure. Discharges are in the form of gases, particles or liquids. This paper provides procedures to estimate the level of the public exposure based on the conservative assumptions and simple calculations in the facility using unsealed liquid sources. They consist of two processes; (1) to calculate maximum concentration of gaseous effluents discharged through the exhaust pipe and average concentration of liquid effluents discharged through the drain of the storage tank, (2) to compare each of them to numerical guidances for the discharges of radioactive gaseous and liquid effluents mentioned in the related notification. For this purpose followings are assumed properly; daily usage, form and dispersion rate of radionuclides, daily amount of radioactive liquid waste and exhaust and drainage equipment. The procedures are readily applicable to evaluate environmental effects by planned effluent discharges from facilities using the unsealed radioactive materials. In addition they may be utilized to obtain practical requirements for radiation safety control necessary for the reductions of the public exposure.

  • The Gonggeomji Reservoir is a historical irrigation facility built in the 8th century and designated as a wetland protected area by Ministry of Environment, Korea. In order to collect the baseline data necessary for developing a sustainable conservation strategy, we investigated the classification of actual vegetation, the vegetation distribution and the floristic structure of the vegetation in the Gonggeomji Wetland Protection Area. In the whole protection area, a total of 26 plant communities were classified including the wetland, riparian, grassland, forest, farmland, and orchard vegetation. According to the results of detrended correspondence analysis, the structure of wetland vegetation was mainly affected by water depth and human disturbance. In reservoir wetlands, floating vegetation such as Utricularia vulgaris var. japonica, Trapa japonica, and emergent vegetation such as Nelumbo nucifera, Typha spp. completely covered the water surface. Since 2014, the reservoir wetland has been terrestrialized with the expansion of emergent and hygrophytic plants. For the sustainable conservation and restoration of wetland protected areas, it is necessary to naturalize the topography and wetland vegetation, recovery the hydrologic system, and restore ecosystem connectivity from wetlands to forests.
