  • The optimization and integration of a fuel cell were performed to improve the performance and reliability of the fuel cell in this paper. To improve the performance of the PEMFC, current and voltage of the fuel cell were measured using an electrical load, and the results was compared and analyzed with the data of a commercial fuel cell. Based on the above results, a controller for a fuel cell UAV applications was designed, and the fuel cell control algorithm was developed to optimize the performance of the fuel cell UAV.

  • Stealthy, high maneuverability and super cruise abilities are required for the next generation fighter and unmanned aircraft. Thrust vector control technique currently come into use to meet these requirements. In this experimental study, axial and pitch thrust were measured and Schlieren visualization were carried out using the scaled two dimensional thrust vector nozzles under various pitch deflection angle, pitch flap length and height. From the study, we could get the supersonic flow characteristics and draw an optimum geometric configuration of the two dimensional thrust vector nozzle.

  • To analyze flow characteristics of the side jet thruster with 4 shutters and rectangular nozzles, a 3-D simulation has been implemented. Numerical calculations for two rotation angles of the shutter, have been conducted. Internal recirculation in a chamber and asymmetric flow structure in a nozzle were observed. In addition, the more shutter rotated, the more asymmetries of flow increased, and this phenomena resulted in thrust bias. The degrees of thrust bias and thrust performance with the rotation angles of the shutter were predicted and compared with theoretical thrust.

  • This paper analyzes the probability of failure for the equivalence ratio error. The control error of the equivalence ratio is affected by the aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. In general, reliability analysis techniques are easily incorporated to handle the aleatory uncertainty. However, the epistemic uncertainty requires a new approach, as it does not provide an uncertainty distribution. The Bayesian inference incorporates the reliability analysis results to handle both uncertainties. The result gives a distribution of failure probability, whose equivalence ratio does not meet the requirement. This technique can be useful in the analysis of most engineering systems, where the aleatory and epistemic uncertainties exist simultaneously.

  • With the advancement in technology, miniaturization, integration, and weight reduction of satellite components have become possible. In this regard, existing medium and large satellites have been replaced by small satellites. As the demand for small satellites increases, the need for micro-thrusters has emerged for precise attitude and position control. A laser ablation micro-thruster, which generates thrust by using ablation jets that offer a wide range of thrusts and low-impulse thrusts, is considered as an alternative for micro-thrusters in small satellites. The objective of the present study is to introduce configurations of the laser ablation micro-thruster and its research trend.

  • The objective of the present study is to develope a propultion unit cooling system for the next-generation High-speed EMU. The propulsion power control unit consists of some IGBT semiconductors. In general, those power semiconductors are very sensitive to temperatures and need a cooling system to keep them at a proper operational conditions in the range of $50{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. In this first year of study, we tried to focuss on the understanding of fundamental technologies for each of the two different cooling systems and collecting basic data for design and manufacturing for both cases. For the water cooling system, a heat sink with multi channels of liquid flow was considered and a model unit was designed and performance test was conducted. For the heat pipe cooling system, a Loop Heat Pipe(LHP) was considered as an element to transport heat from IGBT to environment air flow and a model unit was designed and performance test was conducted. The analysis using SINDA/FLUINT showed that those design parameters are good enough for the LHP to properly operate under a heat load up to around 360W.

  • In this study, a comparison was conducted to verify the propellant isolation assembly of the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO). An engineering validation model (EVM) is being developed to simulate the flow of the flight model. Three factors were selected for comparison: the total pressure drop during propellant isolation assembly, the waterhammer by driving thruster valve, and the orifice set up for flow control and damping the waterhammer. The analysis results are compared with EVM test results. In the future, backup data to confirm the design will be established.

  • A fundamental study on a gas injection variable thrust method for thrust throttling in a liquid rocket engine was conducted. The gas injection variable thrust has the advantage of not only being able to control the thrust with a simple structure but it also increases the atomization performance through the injection pressure drop that increases in direct proportion to the density reduction. In this study, spray characteristics such as spray instability, spray pattern, spray angle, and breakup length based on changes in the liquid mass flow rate and amount of injected gas were investigated using effervescent swirl injectors.

  • This study aims to provide basic design data for a pintle injector and its combustion device through case study on the research and development of combustion devices to which a liquid-liquid pintle injector was applied. From data analysis, it was possible to provide the initial dimension of the combustion chamber and pintle injector based on the engine thrust, and the geometric characteristics of the high-efficiency injector. In addition, the pintle tip heat damage prevention mechanism and materials, face-shutoff pintle injector implementation method, and central propellant selection criteria were summarized. Theses results will be used as basic data for the design criteria of an initial pintle injector combustion device.

  • Existing Finocyl grain designs assume configurations and repeat the process of configuration modification and confirmation of the requirements through burn-back analysis. Such a design increases the design fatigue of workers and has a problem of different design completeness depending on capabilities. Therefore, this study devised an optimal design method that applied genetic algorithms to the Burn-back automation analysis program to solve the problem of existing design. For stable search, variable-offset and non-drawable configuration control techniques were developed. The program performance was verified through the searching neutral and double thrust grains.
