  • A rotating propeller of turboprop aircraft gives much effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing such as lift, moment and stall. Specially propeller effect on the wing surface is much more dominant when aircrafts are in landing or take-off conditions. In the present paper, three dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations for the interaction of propeller and wing were carried out for medium sized turboprop aircraft. For rotating propeller, unsteady sliding mesh method was used to simulate a relative motion between moving and static bodies. For the power effect analysis in landing and take off configurations, double slotted flap was also considered and the aerodynamic characteristics were investigated. It was shown that the propeller slipstream enhanced the lift slope including maximum lift by eliminating local flow separation region and this enhancement was more dominant with high lift device.

  • The interaction between forward mounted propeller and wing in ground effect, and its aerodynamic performance are analyzed by potential flow approximation. A Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) for the propeller analysis and a potential based panel method for the WIG are used together with an image method by assuming the free surface as a rigid wall. The interaction of propeller and wing in the proximity of the ground is taken into account by an iterative procedure where the boundary conditions are satisfied with the given convergence criteria. The program developed is first checked by comparing its numerical results with the experimental data and other numerical results for the propeller MP101-rudder MR21 system. Then, the propeller-WIG interaction and its performance versus ground clearance are investigated by changing parameters such as propeller position, diameter and speed of revolution. It is shown that the forward mounted propeller increases the lift forces of the wing and also enhances the height stability, depending on the design parameter. Therefore, the appropriate selection of the design parameter such as propeller diameter, revolution, the longitudinal and vertical position of propeller is necessary.

  • Recently, electric propulsion aircraft with various propeller mounting positions have been under construction. The position of the propeller relative to the wing can significantly affect the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft. Placing the propeller in front of the wing produces a complex swirl flow behind or around the propeller. The up/downwash induced by the swirl flow can alter the wing's local effective angle of attack, causing a change in the aerodynamic load distribution across the wing's spanwise direction. This study investigated the influence of the distance between a propeller and a wing on the aerodynamic loads on the wing. The swirl flow generated by the propeller was modelled using an actuator disk theory, and the wing's aerodynamics were analysed with the VSPAERO tool. Results of the study were compared to wind tunnel test data and established that both axial and spanwise distance between the propeller and the wing positively affect the wing's lift-to-drag ratio. Specifically, it was observed that the lift-to-drag ratio increases when the propeller is positioned higher than the wing.
