Flow Characteristics with Distance between Solid Propellant Grain and Igniter (고체 추진제와 점화기 간 간격에 따른 유동 특성)

  • Flow analysis using computational fluid dynamics was conducted to investigate the effect of the igniter flame caused by the gap between the igniter and the propellant grain in a solid rocket motor. Two propellant grain types were assumed; namely cylinder type (1 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm gap) and the slot type. The slot type had two igniter hole locations. One was located at the small gap of the propellant grain, and the other one was located at the large gap. In the case of the cylinder type, the pressure in the igniter zone was higher with a thinner gap. Additionally, in the case of the cylinder type, the pressure difference between the igniter installed zone and the free volume was also higher as the gap became lower. The cylinder types were affected by the gap distance, but the slot types were not. Moreover, the results of the slot types were similar to the 5-mm gap case of the cylinder type.

  • Using the numerical code for the interior ballistics, the performance of the interior ballistics with the characteristic of the configuration of the solid propellant has been investigated. In existing research, only ball type solid propellant is considered but at this research, cylinder and single slot type solid propellants are considered. Definite the change of performance of the interior ballistics according to specific surface area.

  • This paper describes the development for the dual thrust rocket motor with two types of propellants with different combustion characteristics. We developed the composition of two kinds of propellant to be applied to a rocket motor, and improved a propellant charging process in a free grain type to improve the adhesion method and the problems of adhesion between different propellants. In addition, to meet the ignition phenomenon as a small rocket motor, the ignition delay was improved by applying a nozzle plug developed in a high density foam. The propulsion rocket motor reflecting this design and the improved manufacturing process was evaluated through a ground performance test.

  • This paper describes the development of the dual-thrust rocket motor, which gets a significant change in thrust level by varying the burning area of the propellant grain. Reduced smoke propellant of low burning rate was formulated and the finocyl type grain was designed to get the boosting- and sustaining-phase of the thrust level. And the motor firing data were analyzed in detail. Developed motor was applied to the missile system to implement the successful flight test and this development helped to upgrade the performance of the missile system. The results will be usefully applied to the development of the similar rocket motors.

  • Control method for DACS with variable burning area is designed and the performance of the control method is analyzed by doing simulation at various conditions. DACS, which got solid propellant on board, is designed as end-burning type typically. End-burning type DACS has the merit of controlling pressure and thrust, but it discharges the combustion gas which does not using for getting thrust. Therefore, optimal design of propellant grain and burning area changes over time as a result. Variable burning area can be assumed as a disturbance and adaptive control method is useful for pressure control of DACS effected by disturbance.

  • A survey is offered of the present status of microaluminized propellants industrially used worldwide in most space applications, but new directions are also pointed out making profitable use of the nanoaluminized propellants currently tested in many laboratories. Different industrial- and research-type of solid rocket propellants, mainly but not only, of the well-known family oxidizer/Al/HTPB(oxidizer being AP, AN or a mixture of the two) were experimentally analyzed at the Space Propulsion Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano. In general, they feature the same nominal composition but implement different grain size distributions of the oxidizer or metal fuel. The basic properties of all formulations were compared to that of a standard propellant already certified for flight.

  • Side jet thruster using nozzle closure separation device provides a solid rocket with a trajectory shift function. Side jet thruster consists of low combustion temperature propellant, neutral type propellant grain and nozzle closure separation device. If a trajectory shift is required, side jet thrust is generated on the rocket by separating some nozzle closures located in the opposite direction to thrust. After completing trajectory shift, the other nozzle closures located in the thrust direction are separated to cease side jet thrust. The operation process is verified through ground static test. The result in this study can be applied to changing rocket trajectory by controlling side jet thrust through nozzle closure separation.
