  • KSR-III propulsion system designed in KARI has a gas-pressurization system for propellant feeding system. This system uses a regulator for the control of the ullage pressure of propellant tank and a venturi for passive control of propellant flowrate. This system seems to be very reliable, but the flowrate of propellant varies according to the change of acceleration with the rocket flight. In this paper, dynamic characteristic of KSR-III propulsion feeding system was analyzed in flight condition. The purpose of this research is to find the variation of off ratio and propellant flowrate change for certification condition of engine reliability test.

  • Considering the increase of interest in $H_{2}O_2$ as a rocket propellant, a test facility and a rocket engine have been developed to research in areas of $H_{2}O_2$ mono-propellant propulsion. A detailed design-study of a $H_{2}O_2$ mono-propellant rocket engine of 100-N thrust is presented. Several firings attempted in early stage had some problems with misfire and chamber pressure decrease. Low environmental temperature and impurities included in hydrogen peroxide were considered to be the reasons. Addressing these points resulted in successful firing of the rocket engine and obtained thrust about $100\sim107-N.$

  • The review of the liquid propellant rocket engine is presented. The combustion instabilities which were discovered on solid and liquid propellant rocket engines in 1930, have occurred on propulsion devices, such as gas turbine, ramjet, scramjet and rocket, and thus a study on the combustion instability became necessary. However, this problem has not been solved yet. Therefore, we investigated causes and mechanisms of the combustion instability and surveyed the efforts of solving combustion instability in various countries for developing stable liquid propellant rocket engines.

  • The extinction characteristics of the solid propellant were studied experimentally in this paper. These characteristics are required for designing TCO (thrust cut off) system of the solid rocket motor Parameters to characterize solid propellant extinction were defined by physical observation. A device was designed (or acquiring these parameters and the firing tests were implemented to get the preliminary data for the extinction characteristics of HTBP propellant.

  • A high-impulse, low-power, digital microthruster has been developed using low-boiling-temperature liquid propellant with high-viscosity fluid plug. The viscous fiction force of the fluid plug increases the blast pressure and the low-boiling-temperature liquid propellant is intended to reduce input power consumption. The three-layer microthruster has been fabricated by surface micromachining as well as bulk micromachining in the size of 7$\times$13$\times$1.5㎣. A digital output impulse bit of 6.4$\times$10$^{-8}$ Nsec has been obtained from the fabricated microthruster using perfluoro normal hexane (FC72) propellant and oil plug, resulting in about ten times increase of the impulse bit using one hundredth electrical input energy compared to the conventional multiple-shot microthruster.

  • A bubble trapped in the liquid manifold of INTELSAT IV F-7 spacecraft caused a mass imbalance between the System 1 propellant tanks and a wobble half angle of 0.38 degree to 0.48 degree. A maneuver on May 14, 1980 passed the bubble through the axial jet and allowed propellant to redistribute. A 0.2 rpm change in sin rate was observed with an exponential decay time constant of 6 minutes. In this paper, moment of inertia, tank geometry and hydrodynamic models are derived to match the observed spin rate data. The values of the total mass of propellant considered were 16, 19 and 20 kgs with corresponding mass imbalances of 14.3, 15 and 15.1 Kgs, respectively. The result shows excellent agreement with observed spin rate data but it was necessary to assume a greater mass of hydrazine in the tanks than propellant accounting indicated.

  • Using the numerical code for the interior ballistics, the performance of the interior ballistics with the characteristics according to the position of the solid propellant in chamber has been investigated. In existing research, propellants have been evenly distributed in the chamber. In this study, however, several cases of the existence of empty space in the chamber at which the propellants are not evenly distributed are considered. The 7-perforated propellant configuration has been used in this research. The results have shown the change of performance of the interior ballistics according to solid propellant positions in the chamber.

  • As a hybrid model of continuum motion description which combines the advantages of classical kinematical descriptions i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) description is adopted for the simulation of a fluid-structure interaction of solid propellant rocket interior. The fluid-structure interaction phenomenon with the deformation of solid domain during the simulation. The developed solver is applied flow and propellant structure. The computed results show complex flow physics in the combustion chamber and the behavior of a solid propellant deformation.

  • One of the way to derive design parameters of the fuel feeding system in satellite is to analyze unsteady flow of liquid propellant (hydrazine) in the propulsion system. During steady thruster firing the flow rate is constant: if a thruster valve is abruptly shut down among a sets of thrusters, pressure spikes much higher than the initial tank pressure occur. This renders the fuel flow unsteady, and the fluid pressure and flow rate to oscillate. If the pressure spikes are high enough, there are possibilities that propellant explosively decomposes, thruster valves are damaged, and adiabatic detonation of the hydrazine propellant is potentially incurred. Reflected shockwaves could also affect the calibration and operation of the pressure transducers. These necessitate the analysis of unsteady flow in the propulsion system design, and the calculation results obtained through some governing parameter variation are presented in this work.
