The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM in a co-flowing, propane/air laminar diffusion flame. The average size of mature soot particles deposited in the luminous flame edge is strongly dependent on their axial position in a typical heavily sooting flame. The surface growth of liquid-phase PAHs molecules and the transition to soots from fully-developed precursors could be observed in the radial deposition of the flame. Two sooting regimes were found: one is the transition from the condensed-phase precursors; the other is the aggregation of smaller soot particles (or chains of them) to be carried along particle path lines. In the high temperature flame edge outside the soot luminous flame surface, the very thin fiber-like structures, which are about 10 nm thick, were found.
We construct a mobile broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy system to measure the temperature of combustion gases. To improve the accuracy of CARS temperatures due to Stokes lasers, a modeless dye laser is constructed. A monochromator to disperse CARS spectra is also constructed in the spectrometer for easy portability. The accuracy of CARS temperature, measured in graphite tube furnace in reference to a radiation pyrometer, is better than 2 % from 1000 K to 2400 K. The CARS temperature error due to the variation of the spectral distribution of the modeless laser is measured to be less than 1.5 % during five hours operation. As a demonstration of combustion diagnosis, we applied the spectrometer to measure the temperature distribution of the propane air premixed flame.
Flame propagation characteristics of propane-air mixtures were experimentally investigated in constant-volume combustion chambers. Flame propagation process was observed as a function of mixture strength, initial mixture temperature and initial mixture pressure in quiescent mixtures. A cylindrical combustion chamber and a spherical combustion chamber contain a pair of parallel windows through which optical access into the chamber can be provided. Laser two beam deflection method was adopted to measure the local flame propagation, which gave information on the flame size and flame propagation speed. Pressure development was also measured by a piezoelectric pressure transducer to characterize combustion in quiescent mixtures. Burning velocity was calculated from flame propagation and pressure measurements. The effect of flow on flame propagation was also investigated under flowing mixture conditions. Laser two beam method was found to be feasible in measuring flame propagation of quiescent mixtures. Flame was observed to propagate faster with higher initial mixture temperature and lower initial pressure. Combustion duration was shortened in the highly turbulent flowing mixtures.
An experimental investigation has been made with the objective of studying the limits of equivalence ratio on mixing enhancement in a tone excited jet flame. The jet is pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity and rich flames(${\phi}>1.5$) are used. The excitation frequency is chosen for the resonant frequency identified as a pipe resonance due to acoustic excitation. Methane, propane and butane are used to examine the effect of mixture property on the limit of equivalence ratio. Mixing is always enhanced in a methane/air flame as the excitation intensity increases. Constant lower limits of equivalence ratio for mixing enhancement are present in cases of propane/air and butane/air flames irrespective of mean mixture velocities. The equivalence ratio limits are also found to be related to the flame instability ; the lower Le, the higher the limit of equivalence ratio. Under the equivalence ratio limits, cellular flames are generated as the excitation intensity increases. The amplitude of oscillating velocity for generating a cellular flame in the equivalence ratio limit is proportional to a mean mixture velocity irrespective of fuels.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from Ca to C9 were investigated with nine ambient air samples collected in April 26, August 17, 1996 and January 23, 1997 in a Seoul site. On each sampling day, three 2-hr integrated canister samples were collected in early morning, early afternoon and late afternoon, respectively to study temporal . variation of VOCs. Most of VOC species showed diurnal variation with higher concentrations in the early morning and lower concentrations in the afternoon. The concentrations of light alkanes were high, probably due to the emission from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and evaporation of gasoline. Especially, the concentration of propane was the highest in the morning samples. The concentrations of propane, ethylene, acetylene, and toluene were prominent in their hydrocarbon groups, respectively. These components were the main source of car exhaust, gasoline evaporization, LPG, or solvent usage.
In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons and 7 mixtures was measured in an attempt to substitute HCFC22 used in air-conditioners and heat pumps. The mixtures were composed of R1270 (propylene), R290 (propane), HFC152a, and RE170 (Dimethyl ether, DME). The pure and mixed refrigerants tested have GWPs of $3{\sim}58$ as compared to that of $CO_2$ and the mixtures are all near-azeotropic showing the gliding temperature difference (GTD) of less than $0.6^{\circ}C$. Thermodynamic cycle analysis was carried out to determine the optimum compositions and actual tests were performed in a laboratory heat pump test bench at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of 7.5 and $45.1^{\circ}C$ respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these mixtures is up to 5.7% higher than that of HCFC22. While propane showed 11.5% reduction in capacity, most of the fluids tested had the similar capacity to that of HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $11{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 55% as compared to HCFC22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for. residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.
An experiment using preheated air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. Preheated air combustion generally produces high NOx emissions but it was known very well to reduce NOx emission by diluting the combustion air with inert gas in preheated air combustion. In our study, $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. We set the combustion air temperature on 300K, 500K, 700K, 900K and dilution level from 21% to 10% in terms of oxygen concentration. NOx emission increased along increment of combustion air temperature and decreased along increment of dilution level(lowering of oxygen concentration in combustion air). Flame-off limit with dilution level enhanced, flame length became longer and the location of maximum flame temperature became lower with increasing of combustion air temperature.
For natural gas and LPG fuel, measurements on the concentrations of individual exhaust hydrocarbon species have been made as a function of air-fuel ratio in a 2-liter four-cylinder engine using a gas chromatography. NMHC in addition to the species of HC, other emissions such as CO$_2$, CO and NOx were examined for natural gas and LPG at 1800rpm far two compression ratios (8.6 and 10.6). Fuel conversion efficiencies were also investigated together with emissions to study the effect of engine parameters on the combustion performances in gas engines especially under the lean bum conditions. It was found that CO$_2$ emission decreased with smaller C value of fuel, leaner mixture strength and the higher compression ratio. HC emissions from LPG engine consisted primarily of propane (larger 60%), ethylene and propylene, while main emissions from natural gas were mothane (larger than 60%), ethane, ethylene and propane on the average. The natural gas was proved to give the less ozone formation than LPG fuel. This was accomplished by reducing the emissions of propylene, which has relatively high MIR factor, and propane that originally has large portion of LPG. In addition, natural gas shows a benefit in other emissions (i.e. NMHC,NOx, CO$_2$and CO), SR and BSR values except fuel conversion efficiency.
When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.
